"Scarce components have pushed the manufacturing costs for Sony Corp.’s next PlayStation to around $450 per unit, forcing a difficult price-setting decision in its battle with Microsoft Corp., according to people with knowledge of the matter."

I was budgeting for 499 - 549 anyway.

With that power and if it's BC with several PS generations, that's worth it.

I'll be grabbing Xbox SX too; Game Pass is just too good.

I suspect both will be $499. And I’m ok with that.

More than anything, I’m really hoping crossplay is a standard function for all games next gen.

Don’t they always take a hit with the consoles?

While not all companies, in general yes hardware is somewhat subsidized by the license fees 1st party gets from game sales.

If the BOM is $450 with some of that being a recent spike and not general cost, I can see Sony eating some of the cost upfront to keep the the system at $400-$450.

The PS4 was the first console they didn't take a loss on per console sold.  The profit they made per console sold was pretty minimal though.

The profit they made in the first year was minimal - it has shot up since as components got cheaper.

However taking minimal gains on hardware sales is giant leaps better for Sony than taking losses.  Last year video games made up 27% of Sony's revenue.  I don't think they financially can afford to sell Playstation 5 for a loss.

Microsoft may have more wiggle room on price just because they are not as dependent on video games for revenue.  But in the end I would expect both systems to be within $50 of 500 one way or another.

I hope that not only does Sony go the $499 route but MS does a Price is Right type move and and make theirs between $450-489 just to undercut while having a more powerful console. Regardless, in the initial couple years of a consoles' launch, very little profit gets made off of hardware and MS can eat a bit of a loss by undercutting the price.

$500 is the cutoff point for me. Anything higher than that would take an extremely impressive launch list, and a big disparity in performance over current gen. Of course, I'm expecting said launch list and performance anyway. But in terms of marketing, $500 would seem to be the needle mover. So I hope they go with that.

With all the rumors of Sony being more willing to port to PC, I can't see myself spending any money on a PS5 unless it 1) became impulse priced (<$300), and/or 2) did something with RT or the SSD that PC's won't catch up to for years.  I suppose new controller features could help too.

It's still hard for me to justify buying any console without a library of bona fied exclusives.  Software speaks to me more than hardware, but timed exclusivity is no deterrent.  I can wait.  I bought most Sony exclusives for <$20 this gen anyways.

Was planning on waiting until mid-cycle to pick up whatever PS5 iteration comes out next.  Now I'm thinking that's not even a good idea.

I tend to never buy into the next gen until there's a decent software library I'm interested in which always takes about two years or more. I'll see you guys then.*

*Or I get insanely jealous, want to hype with the rest of the board and spend money I don't have.

I would be surprised if either system has any games that can only be played on the next gen for a while.  I know Sony has indicated that they will - but there is a huge PS4 install base.  It would be a risk to spend big money on a AAA game and not take advantage of the number of buyers from the PS4 gen.

This may be the first Sony console I didn't have at launch.  Not sure I want to pick up an Ampere GPU and a PS5 this year.

Luxuriant entertainment machine is luxuriant.  In the bigger picture who cares, worse case scenario is probably a two year wait for a price drop (or waiting to build a new PC, if the exclusives are indeed being ported over).  Hopefully Sony are consumer-friendly enough to launch the pro and base hardware at the same time.

That’s not how it works. The pro model was a mid gen refresh in response to underpowered launch hardware to match current gen capabilities.

They couldn’t launch a pro at launch because in 3 years they would need another pro model.

I was going to get both at launch but looking at $1000+ games is probably going to be too steep for me to do that. I'll probably just get the XSX because of Games Pass, but if Sony drops that Demons Souls Remake as a launch title as rumored I pretty have to get the PS5. This is going to be tough.
