What are you favorite plot twists in gaming? (mark spoilers)

I want to make a thread where we can talk about our favorite twists in gaming without spoiling other games. So there will be a lot of spoiler tags.

When I think of things that stunned me, I think of most Metal Gear Solid games. MGS1 I played after 2, and yet:

Spoiler

Suffice to say, I remembered very little about 2 besides the Patriots having played 1 around 12 years after I played 2, so Miller, Liquid, etc. were not anything I had much recollection over. So this scene happened and I was like, "tf?"

And yet the foreshadowing was great. At one point, Miller contradicts himself in a random codec convo, and during the Liquid boss fight, you cannot reach Miller.

MGS2:

Spoiler

The entire AI thing was hilarious:

Then creepy. "We're still here," sent me shivers, man:

MGS3:

Spoiler

The triple-cross. Ocelot was ADAM. I really wasn't expecting Ocelot to have this big a role in the overarching story early on, and honestly, I was surprised that I could be so surprised by a prequel.

MGSV:

Spoiler

I really wanted to believe Huey didn't do anything. I wanted to believe it was all a misunderstanding. Then you find out Huey really is a horrible human being. I had to play 1 and 2 after that just to associate that voice with Hal and wipe away Huey's stench.

I'm not sure about a plot "twist", I mean I guess, but generally SOMA. One of the few games I ever found the story to be truly compelling and affecting in and that ending really stuck with me for several days mood-wise.

I wasn't really fond of the "gameplay" perspective of this game, but same. The ending is rough.

I haven't really played many games with plot twists I remember or I didn't consider them twisty enough to be a plot twist.

Spoiler

RDR2

Spoiler

Arthur Morgan getting TB was really unexpected, not sure if that is a twist tho.

I guess Dragon's Dogma has some twists too. I didn't really like them tho. Seemed like a bunch of bullshit that just kinda ruined the ending for me.

It's not a plot twist in the sense of upending everything you thought about the game, though they did hint at it after he was coughed on or whatever by that one guy he beat down form money. I remember @Kal-El814 deduced from his symptoms that he probably had TB, which was deadly at the time.

The first, and only, game thus far where I felt that the whole first person video game format of it sold the impact of the story to me much more than anything else could've. It was really well done and the naivety of your character's voice work etc. was brilliant.

And yeah, the gladly very few enemy encounters are dog shit. The rest I enjoyed as in the simple puzzles and rotate thing xyz to fit into bla bla. Light adventuring I guess.

Remember the scene where you X-Ray yourself? That shit made me uncomfortable and horrified for the entire day.

Definitely "Would you Kindly"

It's not my favorite, but I just finished Ruiner which tries to be mind fuckey for the none of you who have played it

The game takes place in a cyperpunk distopia. In the beginning of the game you've been hacked to "kill the boss of heaven" and the main plotline is that your brother has been kidnapped and that's why you have to do all this dirty work to get him back. Turns out Boss is the CEO of Heaven, a total evil corporation of course, and your character is nothing more than a clone of Boss to be used for spare parts, evidenced by when Boss loses his left arm, he just takes yours. Since you're a 100% clone of Boss there is one problem for him, you will pass all of his biometric security measures, so Boss uses a hacker "Her" to force you to kill all of his rivals. Your brother doesn't actually exist, it's a "would you kindly" program that will make you violently murder anyone you think is stopping you. So Her ends up using you to kill Boss while making Boss think you're working to take out people who want to kill him

I'm gonna dig deep here, and i'm not even real sure if it qualifies as a "twist" per se, but it was back in Chrono Cross when...

Spoiler

You get to the end of time and realise all the machines planted everywhere were placed by the people in future to influence the choices that people make to ensure that "their" future happens.

That was just part of it though. The entire third act of that game was a mind fuck.

Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos: Origins.

Spoiler

The main character/you were the villain all along.

9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors

Spoiler

It was pretty interesting to see what the TRUE plot was, when going in all I thought this game would end up being is a game-ified version of the 'Saw' movies. This had me reeling for a bit after finishing the game.

Kid Icarus Uprising

Spoiler

Oh come on. NOBODY could have predicted how this game was going to unfold. So awesome.

Cloud is actually some garbage grunt that only thinks he was some super special soldier, who was actually someone else entirely named Zack (Zach?)

Well then you can add the fuckery in all the games that followed too. I only ever actually beat FF8 once so I forget all the weird shit going on there, and then well I haven't actually beaten 9 in awhile but isnt some shit like Zidane is from the same planet as Kuja and is really some sort of experiment. I don't know, I forget. Then you have Tidus and Auron from X.

Terrangima -  It's pretty wild.

Spoiler

Your glistening early-game hometown is later revealed to be the only village in Hell.  You were manipulated into resurrecting life in the upper, light world (Earth) for rule by the Devil.

Once you bring technology and human culture into the modern era, the Devil creates a 'light side' version of yourself that kills you.  You're then resurrected by God, then almost killed as a resurrected newborn by your former pals in Hell.

Xenoblade - Seven's arc.

Other than the terrible VO delivery, I think this actually bests Bioshock's on paper. It's not just that you, the player, had no real control.  It's that the guy you thought you were controlling was just fucking with you the whole time.

It's a shame the rest of BK1's plot is pretty by the numbers.

I'm not sure it qualifies as a twist, but the end of Brothers almost made me cry, the mechanical twist. It's the most video game specific revelation I've seen in any game, and just such a touching metaphor.

Otherwise I'd cite cliche' examples like a lot of the Metal Gear stuff, cause I'm a sucker for that series. FF7 had a couple bangers that felt pretty big in the time and place, even if they've become jokes at this point.

Ummm Link's Awakening telegraphs its twist throughout, but I'll cite that one.

Batman Arkham VR, which does not get enough love (Arkham Knight spoilers too btw)

Spoiler

At the end of Arkham Knight, Batman is able to “lock away” The Joker personality that was implanted in him via that virus within his mind. In Arkham VR you’re trying to find out who killed Nightwing, then Robin... it’s revealed that The Joker was chipping away at his “lock” and was slipping out while Bruce Wayne was sleeping, he killed Nightwing and Robin. The game ends with The Joker locking you/Batman within the cell, escaping, and fully taking over Batman’s body and mind, essentially winning.
