This book is a few years old, but it's considered to be a very readable narrative about the transmission of pandemics from animals to humans:

Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic

Quote

The next big human pandemic—the next disease cataclysm, perhaps on the scale of AIDS or the 1918 influenza—is likely to be caused by a new virus coming to humans from wildlife. Experts call such an event “spillover” and they warn us to brace ourselves. David Quammen has tracked this subject from the jungles of Central Africa, the rooftops of Bangladesh, and the caves of southern China to the laboratories where researchers work in space suits to study lethal viruses. He illuminates the dynamics of Ebola, SARS, bird flu, Lyme disease, and other emerging threats and tells the story of AIDS and its origins as it has never before been told. Spillover reads like a mystery tale, full of mayhem and clues and questions. When the Next Big One arrives, what will it look like? From which innocent host animal will it emerge? Will we be ready?

Washington — The first person to test positive for coronavirus in Washington, D.C., is the prominent leader of a historic Episcopal church in Georgetown, the church said Sunday.

The Reverend Timothy Cole, rector of Christ Church Georgetown, was admitted to the hospital Saturday night and is in stable condition, the Reverend Crystal Hardin, the assistant to the rector, said at a press conference outside the church Sunday. The church was founded in 1817 and is a fixture of the upscale Washington community, with a congregation that includes many government officials.

Somewhat of the same experience at my hospital. The attending has to run all suspected patients through the incident command center, who then discusses it with the county, then we get approval for the patient's identification number a few hours later. Results have come back within 24 hours. Great news though (/s): county can only review during business hours, otherwise you gotta wait. Oh, and we send the sample to the county also so gotta wait all weekend if the sample is sent on a Friday.

To be fair, I don't know the exact details and comments that occur from the attending on, but I know there's frustration. The non-cynical side of me thinks there's some form of resource preservation going around. Based on CDC's current guidelines, they are stating covid patients require to be cared for in a negative-pressure room (which also requires the N95 masks). But knowing the incompetence of this administration, it's more likely that there is no clearly disseminated plan from the government.

The White House overruled health officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus, a federal official told The Associated Press.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted the plan as a way of trying to control the virus, but White House officials ordered the air travel recommendation be removed, said the official who had direct knowledge of the plan. Trump administration officials have since suggested certain people should consider not traveling, but have stopped short of the stronger guidance sought by the CDC.
