I love traveling. Expensive yes, but totally worth it. I've done a few Contiki Tours, and can't wait to do another. Would really like to visit Southeast Asia, so Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia (I hear Bali is stunningly beautiful from my Australian friends who constantly go), Cambodia, etc. I'd also love to take a trip to Europe again and see some of the places I missed the first time. Hopefully I can go with my girlfriend as she's half Croatian and would love to show me some places there, like where her mom grew up, and I'd love to take her to see the Louvre since she loves art, and museums, and I missed it my first time as well.

Like you said I can understand not being able to travel, but not wanting to because of some jingoistic view that America is the best, and there's no point in seeing other countries is a big problem. Infuriatingly stupid people.

You have the right attitude about traveling. It really is infuriating, I agree.

Everyone should travel to a Muslim country at least once. Just not, like, UAE or somewhere that builds their tourism industry on the backs of slave labor, etc.

Turns out Muslims are people, too. Getting woken up by the call to prayer is a great alarm clock. One time I went to this bar in a Muslim part of southern Thailand, the bartender was wearing a hijab and everything. In addition to alcohol, you could order weed from the bar, or even mushroom smoothies. There was this group of crazy Russians getting fucked up, and one of the times the bartender brought weed to them, they offered her a hit, and she smoked it.

Seeing a woman in a hijab smoke bush weed out of a conch shell pipe with a bunch of Russians who didn't know any word in English other than "apologize" is something I'll never forget.

This is an awesome story, and I agree. People should travel to all sorts of different places. The amount of times I've heard white people say they are going to [insert predominantly white, English-speaking country here] and I always roll my eyes. I then suggest places like Morocco and Thailand and they're like: "oh, it's not safe".

Bitch, please. Like America is so fucking safe. Every country brings risks - it's like they think Morocco was a war zone. When I tried to explain to the white, female college student that I'd been there, and there was no reason to feel unsafe and a place like Morocco would probably be more fun, more eye-opening, and provide more interesting experiences than yet another trip to Italy or France or whatever the fuck (and Italy is awesome) and even my wife insisted she understood why the woman felt unsafe.

I just . . . couldn't understand a defense of not going to a major cultural hub of a city of the world? Yes, you can be pickpocketed in some countries/cities, don't go to the wrong parts of town, but the same logic applies in America just as much as outside of it. Americans are easy marks but c'mon, to be so afraid that you don't try and you just stick to Europe? Jesus.

pinch of mushrooms (they didn't measure) mixed with a shot of vodka, a shot of brandy, mango juice, and ice. I've never tried to make it at home, mainly because I don't own a blender. But I did make sure to take down the recipe. Someday.

Covid ruined my damn travel plans. This year was supposed to be my first to visit overseas. We figured we’d start with the UK because it wouldn’t be as big a culture shock and I love the history there and wanted to see some iconic sites.

we’re hoping we can still do Japan next year with a group of friends. The money has been put back, so hopefully this shit is under control by then.

I have a lot of places I want to visit in my lifetime. I’d also like to tour most of Europe, including the eastern parts, I’d like to visit a country in Southeast Asia, too.

I feel your pain.  There are a whole bunch of places in China I want to visit.

2020 sure threw a monkey wrench into doing that anytime soon.  And that’s after the past four years of Trump were already, um, *complicating* my plans.

My wife and I were going to go to Croatia this year for our honeymoon, but we're changing our plans to the Canadian Maritimes once we can travel again, just to explore more of our item country. I've been to the Philippines and it was awesome though, as well as Ukraine and Cuba. Travel  definitely broadens the mind and embiggens the soul.

Japan is very cool to see, but once you get outside of the bright lights and tourist attractions, it becomes very obvious they don't want you there.

My favorite place to travel was Afghanistan with the military. I know its not actually traveling, perse, but goddamn, we were enbedded in the hindu kush with a village of sheep farmers, and they would often invite us for meals. Most of the time I had no idea what I was eating. They would cook in these huge, like 4-5' diameter skillets, with all kinds of meats and spices, rice, peppers and veggies. It was incredible. We would patrol, and the whole town smelled soooo good, our mouths would water all day.

Id give anything to see that country stable and be able to go back. Incredible people.

The experience of enbedded, instead of in a base, is probably the biggest factor in me knowing what great people most really are, because I didn't have a high opinion after 9/11.

Tokyo is no less hostile than London or New York. I will say Japan wore out its welcome for me after about a month, though. It started to feel claustrophobic. Still, I think Japan or Korea is basically the closest a western person can get to visiting an alien planet, it's definitely worth the trip.

This whole Q thing is like watching a really subpar Season 9 episode of X-Files and somehow taking it seriously, I just can't wrap my head around still. I should create a fake Parlor profile under the name J. Doggett and 'leak' insider info to see how long it takes.

Edit: Yeah I was like two pages behind when replying with that. Didn't realize the conversation had swung to D1P Travel Agency, which is actually much more interesting!

I've been to Croatia twice. I can't speak for everywhere but I've been to the Istria region and also visited Zagreb and drove further South. Everywhere I saw was fantastic and I'd highly recommend going still at some point.

Yes we still definitely intend to go, just likely not until 2023 or 2024.

Finding out @Greatonesherewent to Bucknell shows me how small this world really is. My aunt moved out to Lewisburg to go there for college and she ended up staying there because she enjoyed the town. I go up once a year to visit my cousins. They’re like the only liberal people there.

Oh whoa very cool! Bucknell was awesome, the town definitely wasn't. Your aunt certainly must have unique taste in locations . . . :p
