German video game developer Daedalic Entertainment unveiled its upcoming title, Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

Quote

"We have the story that we all know from the book, but everything that happens to him before he appears in the book are the main things we will see in our game," Fichtelmann says. "We will tell the story before he first appears in the books."

Daedalic partnered with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish the new game, which is slated for release in 2021 on PC and "all relevant console platforms at that time."

Gollum is the first title being developed in the new partnership between Daedalic and Middle-earth, but plans for further games in the future are in the works.

“Our goal was to present a storytelling experience. About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing Lord of the Rings,” Fichtelmann says of the formation of the partnership. "After some negotiations, it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years."

Fichtelmann says Daedalic's goal with its Lord of the Rings projects is not to go "too deep into the uncanny valley" by making hyper-realistic games. "When it comes to shapes, colors, we definitely try to produce something that is a statement," he says.

Isn't Gollum's history that he hid in the depths of a mountain for hundreds of years eating fish and catching an occasional stray goblin and eating them.

Unless they drastically change his history I'm not sure what kind of game that will be.

There were at least a few years of him running around between Bilbo taking the ring and LOTR.

This wiki says he did live in the mountain for 400 years, and I suppose he could have gone on some adventures during that time without it affecting continuity at all.

The years between the Hobbit and LoTR consisted of him searching for Bilbo and the shire / then getting captured by Orcs and being tortured until he gave up what he knew about the ring.

I don't believe at any point in his long history was he ever considered any sort of a fighter.  He was always a poor fisherman and a thief. I think it even says in The Hobbit that the goblins he would kill in the tunnels were weak and lost... and even then he had the advantage of sneaking up from behind while he was invisible.

Sounds like their take on Gollum will be different than Serkis' According to this

"In March 2019, Daedalic Entertainment unveiled The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an action-adventure game set in JRR Tolkien's famed fantasy realm. Nothing was said about the game itself, though, except that it "tells Gollum's story from a perspective never seen before ... while staying true to the legendary books." But the latest issue of Edge reveals more about what's in store, including that the lead character will not look like he did in Peter Jackson's films.

"We don't want to displease the folks who have only see the movies. But in short, he doesn't look like Andy Serkis. We started with the person he was and then evolved him. You can see that this was once something like a human being, before the Ring corrupted him," senior producer Kai Fiebig said."

Does the average player even still give a fuck about Lord of the Rings especially after Game of Thrones?

I had this misconception before I started watching GoT. When my friend said it's nothing like LotR I decided to watch GoT.

So yeah someone will give a fuck because they are nothing alike.

They're pretty different, really, though I suppose it's possible that many people aren't aware of the differences.

Why do game companies think people want so much Gollum??? Like of all the fucking characters in the series?

You make it sound like this is the latest in a long series of Gollum-based games. :p

There's been a good variety of LOTR games, even if they haven't all been great games. I'm interested in seeing what this looks/plays like.

I'm not saying they're the same damn thing, simply that I think to the average slightly younger player they may inhabit the same space of "Fantasy franchise game but not the one I want". And yes, I've watched the show and no it isn't LotR.
