Unpopular Positive Opinion Challenge

For some reason I've been seeing this go around twitter, so let's give it a go:

unpopular_opinions.png

It is actually a bit harder than I expected. I think part of the reason for me is that I just don't see a lot of movies that everyone hates. I've got so little time and I keep up with film news so much that I always have a bunch of really well loved films to watch. The other thing I found is that a bunch of "unpopular" movies that I really love end up having an RT score ~50-60%, so movies like Man of Steel, Cloud Atlas, Spring Breakers, Mother, and Watchmen don't quite make the cut. Then I thought of a bunch that I'd seen recently, but weren't released in my adult life post 2000, Dune, Mouse Hunt, Rat Race, and The Princess and The Cobbler didn't count.

So I could only think of four movies that actually fit the bill, and only two of them actually had audience scores that were also below 50%. So here are mine in chronological order:

Speed Racer - 40%

I feel like this is almost cheating, as it seems the general consensus on this movie has come back around. With an audience score of 60%, I suspect that it's even more popular on this board.

Pain and Gain - 50%

Yeah, it's not "under 50%," but I'm still going to count it. With an audience score of 47%, I'm at least in the minority of this one, even if it's just barely. I feel like it's Bay's most thoughtful work, even if he didn't mean it to be. It was certainly the film that made me want to see him move away from total bombast.

American Ultra - 43%

I think the tonal shifts earned this film its poor ratings, but I think it kinda works. It's supposed to be a shock to the system, and it's very well cast.

Warcraft - 28%

It seems audiences (or at least online commentators), liked Warcraft well enough to leave a 76% positive rating, but reviewers weren't on the same page. I totally get why anyone wouldn't like Warcraft, and I probably have some attachment given how much Warcraft I, II, III, and WoW I've played, but I actually think it does more right than wrong.

So, what movies do you guys like that fit the bill?

This is really difficult. I had to go through lists of movies on Rotten Tomatoes because some movies that I thought would make the cut were over the 50% threshold. Here we go...

I didn't realize that Keanu Reeve's Constantine was a 46%.

Equilibrium was a 40%? Eh, I still enjoyed it.

Godzilla: King of Monsters wasn't a great film, but it's still way more enjoyable than any other kaiju movies in the last few years? What? There were no other big kaiju films? Blah, it still deserves better than a 42%.

Also, random. Not really a movie I genuinely like, but it deserves mention. My kids like a lot of really not great TV and equally not great movies. Still, Smurfs: The Lost Village is better than the 40% would indicate.

There are tons for me: The Matrix Revolutions, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Mother!, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, The Fall, Immortals, The Fountain (28% top critics is fucking blasphemous), Tron: Legacy, the Riddick franchise, the Daniel Craig Bond franchise (Quantum of Solace and Spectre), Only God Forgives, Man of Steel, Killing Them Softly, The Counselor, Miami Vice (film), Blackhat, Constantine, Margaret, Spring Breakers, Mission: Impossible II, Equilibrium, and Watchmen to name a few.

I think a good number of comedy films I enjoyed a lot don't universally rate well (like Zack and Miri Make A Porno), but comedy is particularly subjective and critics can be really pretentious about them.

Most of those have a RT score over 50%.

Kingdom of Heaven is the first that comes to my mind, but it’s the Director’s Cut I love and the general consensus is that’s the much better version.

Man, I forgot how critically panned the original release was. The DC is a good film.

Well you weren't clear - I chose ones at 50% or close to 50%, whether that was in "all critics", "top critics", or "audience" categories. I wasn't sure if we needed two to meet the criteria or just one. :p

Critics are stoopid.

I've been saying that literally for decades.

A lot of of ones I would name have been named in the thread already...  since I don't give a flying fuck about Rotten Tomatoes I'll have to check. Let's see...

The Thing Prequel/Remake as discussed in my other thread.

Life sitting at 50% is a fuckin' crime.

Pandorum is a great movie

I'll try and think of more.

I loved this movie. The scene where he learns their language is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

Im too lazy to look it up but I’m just gonna assume it’s way below 50%

Waterworld was in the 90's... I loved it too. Always thought it got a bad rap. I also loved that sequence in 13th Warrior when he learned their language.

Dead Silence (2007) - 20% on RT

This was widely shit on and I mean, it has a fucking 20% on RT, but I really think this movie is a modern Horror cult classic in many ways. I'm almost positive people were expecting another Saw style franchise and instead he essentially made something like an homage to 60's Mario Bava Gothic flicks and dark fairy tales.

Sure, it has all the bad Horror cliches ranging from shitty stilted acting, a total lack of logic in favor of set pieces and general weirdness but my god if it isn't atmosphere and set porn. Now I'm not saying it's a masterpiece or anything, I hate some of the dumb late 90's style MTV music video editing but there's something incredibly endearing, gloomy and cool about this movie and I always remember it very fondly. I even have a t-shirt and a poster from release day. Great Horror flick to get stoned to and just hang back and drink in the cool sets and everything.

Also, Mary Shaw is a fucking great character and all the scenes in the mortuary are classic Horror gold.

How did Godzilla: King of the Monsters get such a low rating, lower than the previous movie?! You see giant monsters fighting each other in glorious fashion, what more do you want!? Shame on the people that slept on it too. Why didn't it make more at the box office?! I repeat, it's got giant monsters beating the shit out of each other! I don't care if the human parts were maybe a little stupid, that's not what I paid a ticket for!

How THE FUCK did that rating happen???

To be fair, the set pieces kind of suck, Rufio sucks, and Pan’s kids are little shits that I don’t feel bad for. Peter Pan and Hook are the best parts of that flick.

My pick? Hollywood Homicide.

Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett playing detectives investigating the murder of a rap group.

No way, the kids are great and Rufio is cool too when he learns his lesson not to be bully in true 90's fashion!

It seems like the 90's has far more of these types of movies than the 2000's. Most movies that were deemed to have sucked in the 2000's really did suck. The first decade of the 21st century suffered from a lot of movies being rushed into production because a writer's guild strike was looming. I can't really think of too many films that have not already been named that fit the criteria for me.

Yeah if you're judging a fucking Godzilla movie based on the human parts, you are really missing the point.
