Boss Battles That Just Aren't Worth the Trouble

Typing this because I'm playing REMake 3 and this fucking Nemesis battle that I assume is the end is just not fun or worth the effort. I'm playing on hardcore and between the bullet spongy enemies and the sluggish characters that can't run for shit, I think I'm over Resident Evil's "formula". Time for them to update this shit for real. And this Nemesis fight can seriously go fuck itself with its tedium. There's no real skill involved and it really comes down to playing through these lame ass set pieces and surving long enough to get to the cutscene where you can finally kill the fucker... even though you don't have anywhere near enough ammo or healing items because they throw a bunch of zombies at you that take +10 shots to the head. What's some other boss battles that just wear out their welcome?

Dark Souls Fatboy and slim and the Capra Demon. The Capra demon can be cheesed but what fun is that.

All of the bosses in DE: Human Revolution . In a game where stealth  and non lethal action are just as viable as killing everything in sight, the Devs farmed out the boss battles and didnt originally include non lethal and stealth options for defeating them. It was entirely possible to get to a boss and have no weapon to kill them with. I always do a stealth/non lethal option when possible, the first boss encounter I had to sit in the corner of the room and chuck boxes at the bosses feet out of line of sight because I had no gun.  I carried a hacked turret through the level to defeat another boss. I believe they eventually patched it.

Yeah I got to the last one too and said fuck it. This shit isn't fun anymore... good choice. Plus those fuckers CHEAT.

I beat the Valkyrie, but man was it not easy. Had to look up some good gear loadouts which helped, and I think I ended up using the Infinity Gauntlet build, which I then used for the rest of the game which was nice, but yeah that fight was frustrating. It doesn't help that the game's hit detection for enemies is kind of broken where you can absolutely be dodged out of the way, but they still connect with you. I really hope the sequel tightens things up.

I'm trying to think of other games to mention that have bosses that made me say, "fuck it", but I can't seem to think of any. I think I'm a bit stubborn and if I quit on a boss I'd feel like I was failing something, so I always keep trying until I've beaten it. Doesn't matter if I die 100 times, or have to come back later after grinding, but I will eventually get my revenge.

I had the opposite experience with the new Resident Evil formula. Thought the characters controlled very well and very much enjoyed the last fight on Hardcore, but I get how it definitely wouldn't be for everyone. Hardcore especially demands a lot.

The Valkyrie in God of War. I got to the last one and kept dying and I just stopped caring.

Yup. Was playing God of War on the hardest difficulty. Loved every other part and fight of this game, but the final Valkyrie fight was pure dog shit, partially because...

You got it, they cheat! And I don't mean that as an excuse, they actually fucking cheat.

(Skip to 2:40:16 if it doesn't link properly.)

The Valkyries aren't the only enemies that cheat, but the final Valkyrie is where the cheating absolutely hurts most and ruins the fun completely.

The final Valk reminded new of Souls bosses tbh. When I played her in my second run, I died a few times but then overpowered her.

I gotta watch the video because I didn't find it cheated? It was more about learning the tells.

She absolutely home in on you even after you've clear dodged her stomp move... they ALL do that. So much of beating them relies on you getting a run where the hit detection doesn't fuck you over and not skill. That's the problem with the Valkyries in that game. By the time I got to the last one, I just stopped caring enough to beat her. I'm sure I could have if I kept playing... I just didn't give a shit. Broken game mechanics in difficult encounters will ruin a game faster than actual difficulty for me everytime. A surprising amount of games suffer from this. It's why games like Doom and Doom Eternal work so well for me... sure they can get tough, but they are always fair and everytime I died it wasn't because the game itself fucked me. I just had to "git gud" :p Same thing with Sekiro.

FF7R final bosses. I was so tired of that game by the end so when they tossed boss after boss at you, I said fuck it and YT the ending.

the metal tank boss where you only have aerith and barrett drove me nuts and took me forever to whittle down its health

I also utterly hated this boss. I beat it and just felt annoyed and glad I didnt have to play it again, that's about it.

Pretty much how I felt after I beat it last night... such a pointless and tedious boss battle that takes away from the game and just sours the overall experience. Great job Capcom

I remember Devil May Cry 4 being so repetitive with the boss battles. I forget the exact scenarios. But by the 3rd or 4th time fighting the same people I said screw it.

I struggled to get through that game. Played it earlier this year and I agree. Boss battles were tedious and largely not fun.

That was actually my first DMC game I played more than an hour or two of. Dunno what prompted me to start it, but I'm not sure if I'll play any of the others.

If you're on the hardest difficulty, most (or at least a lot) of her attacks will one-shot kill you unless I guess you level up a bunch or get some gear, I can't remember exactly. But in my case, most mistakes were fatal. Except it wasn't just mistakes. Check out the timestamp in the video. There's bullshit hitboxes (in slow motion for your viewing pleasure) where you'll be 10 feet away and almost done with your roll and then she teleports you back into a grab. Then several of her moves have telegraphs that are entirely inconsistent, which you can also see in the video. The dodge left means she'll do a wing attack, while the dodge right means she'll do a turbo punch... except when it randomly switches, or sometimes she'll do it out of nowhere with 0 telegraph.

It was such fucking bullshit, made all the worse because it was so long with no checkpoints. You can only lose to a teleport-grab so many times before you just say fuck it.

The Lost Brothers fight in Lord's of the Fallen.  It's one of the most frustrating boss fights I've encountered in an already difficult at times game.  I got through it because I was enjoying the game up to that point, but I almost gave up as that fight felt intentionally unfair without a clear pattern present.  Having two overpowered bosses fighting you with elemental abilities in a cramped room is not my idea of fun.  I certainly feel accomplished being able to say I beat that game, but I have no desire to play its expansion after a fight like that.

I saw ManVsGame spend *hours* on that fight. It also took him like 30 hours of stream time to find the last trinket he needed to 100% the game.

Resident Evil 5. My friend and I played the whole game on co-op and then just could not figure out how to progress through it, even after looking up a bunch of videos on it. We tried letting the AI control the second character to see if maybe it would be able to do it but instead the fucking AI, who had the character that stays on the cliff, would just immediately fire off all its ammo and then run around on the cliff futilely waving around the stun rod.

I know I played and beat both RE5 and RE6 on gamefly rentals but I swear I can't remember shit about either one of those games... I know one of them had Chris punching a boulder for some reason.

The Hollow Knight final patch boss gauntlet.  I don’t think I’ve seen anything that insane in a modern game.  Especially Absolute Radiance.

I really hope Silksong won’t require anywhere near that much skill just to finish.

The regular final boss was fine and after getting 2 endings that way I checked to see if there were more and just watched them instead of attempting to fight Absolute Radiance. I had already attempted Grey Prince Zote, Nightmare King Grimm and the Trial of the Fool and given up on them so I wasn't feeling masochistic.

Nightmare King Grimm took me at least 6 hours to finally beat. I honestly had a good time just bashing my head up against it while watching Netflix on a second monitor.

I'm going old school - Ninja Gaiden on the NES.

Boss fight was so fucking difficult...the biggest kick in the ass is when you lose you don't start at the boss - YOU HAVE TO DO THE ENTIRE LEVEL LEADING UP TO HIM AGAIN!!

That game took forever for me to beat! But I will admit, when I did it felt like a fantastic gaming accomplishment. Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3 weren't nearly as difficult though :)
