While not as deadly, this is literally Contagion.

I mean if this is the template the White House is working off, we'll need to live exactly like this until at least July, and live similarly for the next 18 months. And then the entire population will need to be vaccinated.

Maybe a stupid question, but hasn't it largely died off in China? And they didn't have to do anything nearly to this scale (other than shut down for 2-3 months).

China has the advantage of not having civil rights.

They reported just 16 or 17 new cases today.

To those of you whose mental health -- particularly anxiety, imo -- has gotten worse over the past week, you're not alone.

Quote

The stark new reality in America: 10% told not to work in the past week, 10% say they're self-quarantining, and 22% say their mental health got worse in the past week.

Quote

Between the lines: The national survey was conducted Friday through Monday (March 13-16), as the public began to come to terms with the significance of the outbreak.

  • That was just before the U.S. government asked people to begin a 15-day period of social distancing, and President Trump proposed sending checks to Americans to offset hits.
  • Despite the impact they're feeling in other ways, most Americans said their physical health is unchanged. Only 4% said they know someone who's tested positive.

Quote
  • 82% said there was no difference in their own physical health over the past week (and about half of the rest said their health actually improved).
  • 86% said their access to health care had not changed in the last week, while 9% said it had gotten worse.
  • But 22% said their mental health had gotten worse, and 29 percent said their emotional well-being was taking a hit.

I’ll admit I get anxiety when I’m working or about to head into work. Been on light duty work for 9 months now (after wrist surgery)and has been nothing but me traveling in my car dropping off racks and display materials at gas stations and convenient/grocery stores. Has me on the busiest highway in Canada (not bad now) and there are a lot of asshole drivers out there. My weed is my saving grace right now for when I get home and same for other friends/family. My local radio station mentioned this morning how they are coping with the sticky icky. Also we’re talking about how one will be broadcasting from their kitchen and the other one from the studio starting tomorrow for the morning show going forward. I’m typing this at work now and neither of my bosses spotted yet and no email sent out to me on what to do. I guess they might of been given the WFH option as of yesterday. I can deliver a couple racks to downtown Toronto and some glides for coolers, but why should I in a time like this

My company went through fun stages.  Last week it was work from home is encouraged, Monday it was get permission from your manager before you come to the office, then yesterday the emails said if you aren't in distribution then security will turn you away and nobodies badges work now.

My company is still in full "lol don't believe everything you read libtard" denial and we have literally taken zero steps and changed nothing. Within an hour at work I've seen at least two offices with four people hanging out and bullshitting in close proximity of each other.

I've actually actively been mocked at least three times by now for actually exercising social distancing and not leaving my office if I'm being forced to come in. What very little faith I had left in the average person...I'm about a week away from going early-stage Joker.

For whatever it's worth, a ton of businesses are taking it seriously.

tl;dr: Without total isolation and closure of almost everything, 90 million people will die globally, 1.5x that of WWII. Up to 4 million in the US. The good news is that with total closure measures it will be massively reduced as ventilator capacity will not be exceeded. The bad news - if at any point the closures are lifted before a vaccine is released and distributed, it jumps back up. So realistically, the extreme measures will need to last over a year, possibly 18 months.

The question: will people and society accept that? Or will the decision be made to return to normal at the sacrifice of millions of lives?

We've already surpassed South Korea's death total, and will likely surpass the total number of infections today.    NYS has 772 new infections so far today.

EDIT:  I wouldn't be surprised if we overtake Italy and China for total infections within the next few weeks.

My mental health had certainly taken a hit this past week. Yesterday the emotions of it all finally caught up to me and I laid on my bed catatonic for almost the whole afternoon. In the autistic community we call that autistic burnout.

The good news is that as of yesterday I’ve been sober from weed for a whole month and alcohol for over five months. This has been a trying time for recovering addicts, including myself, but I’m thankful that I’m still going strong.

Florida peeps: Publix is changing its hours more. It opens at 8a, from 7a before, so employees have more time to stock shelves and do more sanitation.

Having worked for Publix back in HS and college, this is probably a very good idea. It's gotta suck for customers who arrives at 7/7:30 and can't find anything. People get in as early as 4, sometimes 2, so they'll be able to get tons of product out on shelves.

Trudeau has announced $85 billion in emergency measures, targeted at individuals and small businesses. $27 billion in direct support, the rest in liquidity measures and tax deferral.

  • People without paid sick leave - Government will provide 14 weeks of paid sick leave (equivalent to EI) to everyone in Canada who doesn't have sick leave, including family members who have to take care of others with COVID-19.
  • Direct income benefit - People who don't qualify for EI will now receive equivalent payments if they lose their jobs (self-employed, low-hours, etc).
  • Small businesses - Government will provide subsidy equal to 10% of payroll to help them keep employees on (wow)
  • Canada Child Benefit will be boosted to help parents
  • Every low-income adult will receive a boost to GST credit. $300/adult, $150/child
  • Student loans - 6 month interest-free moratorium on student loan payments
  • Homelessness - doubling funding
  • Domestic violence - shelter funding being boosted
  • Indigenous - Community support fund
  • Farmers - Farm Credit Canada being boosted

Canada is in the best financial shape in the G7 (lower debt to GDP) and can use that to help people. These measures are not exhaustive, and will be expanded as needed.

Final message: "In Canada, public health should never hinge on financial considerations." He also made a call for Canadians to help each other, and gave examples of people getting groceries for elderly people, retired nurses coming back, etc. Thanks front-line workers, including grocers, postal workers, pharmacists, and healthcare workers.

EDIT - In answer to question about recession, Trudeau says that, effectively, he doesn't care about money right now, the top priority is to help people.

EDIT 2 - Payments to individuals will be bi-weekly. Just FYI, EI covers up 55% of your income with a cap. So these announcements mean up to $1146 every two weeks for individuals affected.

That's unfortunate.

Our company has taken a lot of action already and we are taking this extremely seriously. We have isolated truck drivers and other third parties from our employees, have installed an additional 9 sanitizing stations, staggered breaks to promote social distancing, and are sending people home with any sort of symptoms. We don't have the option of work from home because of the nature of ag processing.

Cool, my grandfather's brother is one of the confirmed cases Connecticut. Sounds like the only reason he was even tested was because he's in the ICU. That means in my family I've got one actual positive and two presumed cases that don't qualify for testing.
