A depressing article on why flattening the curve will do almost nothing to help, since even spreading the infection over the next year will still overload the medical systems of the world 10x over: https://medium.com/@joschabach/flattening-the-curve-is-a-deadly-delusion-eea324fe9727

We simply don't have enough ventilators and ICU beds/equipment.

Basically, we'd need to stretch it out over 10-15 years to stay within the limits we have (USA):

The article goes on to say that flattening the curve isn't the solution, completely stopping the curve is. This is why the only effective solution (health-wise) is to basically stop society for the next 1 to 2 years until a vaccine can be developed, and hope that the virus doesn't mutate much or develop numerous strains.

Still not long enough to conquer that backlog! :vortex:

I can’t wait to be homeless so I won’t get a virus that probably won’t even kill me. I mean let’s do what we can but we can’t destroy society for this. It’s not like it’s some inescapable automatic death sentence to everyone who gets it.

After reading the article I do tend to  think “flattening the curve” to be an exercise in futility.

The guy doesn’t understand that containment is a part of curve flattening.

You're right, it's only an inescapable death sentence for millions.

The churches my grandmothers go to have all canceled services.

Yup. Now that Massachusetts has banned gatherings of 25 or more, I've gotten a few phones calls asking about how to stream services online and such. A few churches in my area are either going online only it running like  5 or 6 services on Sundays with a cap off 20 congregants. The latter still seems crazy because this stuff can just remain on chairs and then just get everyone sick.

My mom's church still had services yesterday.  Only about 50 people showed up because of concerns.  The good news is that the church implemented a no handshake and hug or other personal contact policy, which is better than pretending like everything is fine.  I still worry because both of my parents are in their 60s and they are smokers.

Over the last few weeks, I've seen a number of infectious disease "experts" tweeting/podcasting/interviewing about their predictions.

Their expectations of infection and fatality rates vary so dramatically, that I can only conclude that no one "knows" what the future will bring.

The "model" is only as good as the inputs, and there are so many unknowns with COVID-19, the model output is highly variable.

My expectation is that somewhere between 3,000 and 30,000,000 will die in the US from the Coronavirus.

Some guy at work was at a similar thing in Mexico last night. From what I understand Mexico is giving no fucks.

I think this thread is a conspiracy to dethrone "Existing While Black" in terms of sheer hopeless depression factor

Well they might be closer than you think. A lot of it involves people (at least in the US) being able to get medical treatment, a lotta poor black people out there....

I think the thing that is among the most frustrating about all of this is that there's no way that Trump can calm people's fears. Even if by some miracle he can overcome his ego and actually say the right things about what needs to shut down, how people need to act, what assistance will be available for people, even if he says all that, he's physically not capable of representing the gravity of the situation. The word vomit that would come out of his mouth would lack and sense of seriousness, urgency, or sincerity. He does not, and can not speak in a way that people can take seriously.

All the stuff, the shutdowns, the social distancing, started happening while Trump was still saying everything was fine, its under control. Its abundantly clear that the way this country gets through this is completely in spite of Trump, and not because of it.

Not entirely. They initially went for behind closed doors for Liga MX matches. Literally as I was watching yesterday's first match they canceled the league.

He's the Ben Stein (in terms of cadence and voice) of Presidents.
