You're also dealing with the three most selfish generations of Americans in probably the history of the country being asked to make sacrifices. The Boomers, The Gen X-ers and The Millennials.

Generations of government and social pressure to not sacrifice anything, save the civil rights of black and brown Americans will do that.

My uncle just came home from a trip to Florida, and was told once he got off the plane at Pearson Airport in Toronto that he now had to put himself in a 14 day self quarantine once he got home. My aunt stayed behind and wishes she went as she would enjoy the 14 days off. Now she is dealing with the hordes of people shopping while working her job at the local Walmart.

I hope that he is self-isolating himself from his wife.

So going into March break:

1)  All of the schools will be closed for 3 weeks

2)  All of the city/region march break camps are cancelled

3)  Any camp/day care that was taking place at a school is closed

4)  All of the libraries are closed

5)  The ZOO is closed (this would be an outdoor event)

What are parents supposed to do with their kids when they go to work?  Ah, yes.  Give them to their grandparents (you know, the ones who are the most at risk if they catch the disease).

All I can say, is that THANK GOD I am not in one of those downtown condos.  Can you imagine being cooped up with 10 & 12-year-old boys, and a 4-year-old girl in a tiny apartment, with nowhere to go for 3+ weeks?

Canadian cabinet meeting today to discuss further measures, will consider shutting border completely as well as instituting mandatory isolation for those affected.

Quote

"We've taken some very strong measures, and we are not taking anything off the table, we are looking daily at next steps that we might take, or we shouldn't take and those conversations continue,” Trudeau, who is in self-isolation at Rideau Cottage, said in an exclusive interview with CTV's Question Period on Sunday.

Quote

Now, Trudeau says a mandatory enforcement of a 14-day isolation could be coming.

"We are considering everything. There is nothing we have taken off the table, we are in close discussions with public health experts to look at what is the best way to keep Canadians safe.

They shouldn't fly if they plan to go back to Canada.  I'm sure the LAS airport and all of the planes are infested with coronavirus right now.  Probably the casinos too.

The issue isn't that those things are closed. The issue is that we live in a society that never valued families who didn't have access to these things and now everyone gets to see it.

Timeline of Trump:

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”

February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”

February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”

February 25: “I think that's a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”

February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.”

February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”

February 28: “We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”

March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”

March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”

March 6: “I think we’re doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”

March 6: “Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 6: “I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus.”

March 9: “This blindsided the world.”

March 13: "I don't take responsibility at all."

Well obviously the parents work from home. A privilege afforded to all retail and service employees.

This is the crazy part. Aside from a few, most lawmakers and public officials can say "just work from home!" (Often because they can) without thinking that for many, it's the difference between paying rent and risking sickness

My girlfriend's parents are here from London right now, and all of their kids live here so it wouldn't be a total disaster if they got stuck here for a while, but I was trying to impress on her dad yesterday that if being away for more than two weeks is going to be a problem then he needs to change their flight from Wednesday to fucking ASAP.

I also pointed out that if god forbid they do get it there's something to be said for having it in a country with a real healthcare system.

Regardless of the healthcare system, once you reach the tipping point of more sick people than there are hospital beds, it's game over.  Taiwan and South Korea have good healthcare systems, but they also understood the benefit of testing early and often (for free) as well as social distancing.  Europe has good healthcare, but that probably won't help because most of the countries haven't taken testing and social distancing seriously.  Frankly, most countries haven't.

The city services that are being closed are disproportionately being used by lower income Canadians.  "Rich" families don't use the city-run day camps.

Fortunately, most of the cases so far have been in countries with well-developed health care systems.  When the real human suffering will being is when it hits the favelas of Rio/Sao Paulo, or the ghettos of Mumbai, Dehli or Lagos.

I mean, do we know there's testing going on in those places right now?

Italy saw a 25% rise in deaths today, with 368, from the first 803 deaths in the country, which was Thursday, only 2 people under the age of 50 have died.  Now they're up over 1800.

How flippantly "work from home" has been tossed around has been quite obnoxious to me as well as someone in construction. They make it sound like it's an obvious choice across the board, I mean, duh, just work from your laptop, big deal! I may be projecting of course but it keeps pissing me off considering most of my friends are blue collar.
