Imagine being somebody who isn't terminally online already and hearing on the news like, "Elon Musk's Truth and Reconciliation commission has concluded that @MAGAEdgelord69's posts were unfairly deemphasized in Twitter searches"

Their handle would end in 1488 not 69

Read today that Ford is starting to get the first batch of F-150 Lightnings rolled out to dealerships, and I'm wondering if a big part of all this is just Elon calling this the top for Tesla stock and trying to diversify away from it.

This would be a ridiculously bad way to achieve that goal.

He’s not selling his stake in Tesla; he’s using it as collateral to borrow cash. ‘Diversification’ is irrelevant because as Tesla drops in value, his exposure to the banks increases. It just makes him even more dependent on Tesla, and the prospects of that are, as you pointed out, rather grim.

I look forward to the influx of ex twitter devs looking for a new role. My company is currently in expansion mode. :batting:

For the last time, when you're looking at porn you have got to stop referring to your penis as "your company"!

The really short sighted thing here is the belief that twitter is eternal and not replaceable. We could all come up with a list of giants that were all toppled at some point (or caused their own demise).

Quite honestly, Telegram seems like the next Twitter-like space for people to migrate to. Specifically, journalists and freelancers that are putting what they cover in the public sphere.

Going from Twitter to Telegram will absolutely be akin from jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

"I agree" and "Sounds Bad" are not criticism. He gave an opinion. These reporters are acting like children.

He quite clearly criticized the decision to suspend NYpost over the Biden laptop story when he said the decision was incredibly inappropriate.

But who cares if Musk said something mildly critical?

My counterargument to that is that the overall competitive environment is very different today than it was when those platforms were born, thrived, and died.  It's going to be very challenging if not impossible for a viable alternative to Twitter.

If there’s a gradual drop in users (the likeliest option if it just becomes basically 4chan) it gives time for an alternative to scale up

The market is saturated and well within a period of consolidation; even Microsoft and Google (who do not lack the resources to scale and do so quickly) couldn’t establish a foothold. Anything that gets big enough to threaten their market share will get acquired before that threat is fully realized.

I agree that the fringe is amplified beyond its reality via social media, but I think we also have to be a little careful of dismissing occurrences as just the fringe. In 2014, people supporting Trump would have been labeled a fringe group, yet he went on to win the republican nomination and presidency. And while he got voted out of his second term, it was more than close enough that he could still potentially win it in the next term.

The fringe on social media can turn into the typical.

Yes, BECAUSE of social media.

You really gotta reach to pretend thats disparagment.

It isn’t disparagement, flat out. It’s mild criticism of a specific decision. Good luck finding any case where such a thing was considered disparaging in a legal setting.
