Dumb people get appointed to positions all the time, let's not pretend it's some panacea, and it's not like good people who are appointed don't succumb to public pressure anyway.

People deserve the leaders they select (but should have a majority voter support)

Also let's not forget virtually every single police Chief is appointed and have virtually no oversight

I was on the Beltline (multipurpose paved trail through Atlanta) this afternoon. There were maybe 10 people wearing masks. I only went because the weather was supposed to be terrible. I expected a very low turnout. I guess none of us check the weather, because it was packed.

I went to Kings Island today. Overall, I was really impressed with what they were doing, and people were mostly following the rules. It honestly felt as safe as my average trip to the grocery store.

This doesn't mean much. Going to the grocery store still feels like an ordeal.

Florida was the center of another coronavirus confrontation this week. This one involved a man who reacted badly after being asked to put on a mask in a Costco store. In a video shared on Twitter, the man could be seen screaming, “I feel threatened” at Costco customers in Fort Myers. Now, 24 hours after the drama, he has lost his insurance job. Daniel Maples was a salesman at Tedd Todd Insurance. His role in the virus drama went viral on social media when Miami filmmaker Billy Corben tweeted out the brief clip Monday evening. “Florida man at Fort Myers Costco in ‘Running the World Since 1776’ shirt flips out on elderly woman who asked him to wear a mask and man who defended her,” Corben wrote on Twitter. The clip begins with a male voice saying, “We are six feet away from you,” to which Maples calmly responds, “You are harassing me and my family.” He then says something inaudible before suddenly yelling, “I feel threatened!”

Maples starts advancing toward the camera while continuing to scream, “Back off! Threaten me again. Back the f--- up. Put your f---ing phone down.” Corben later said the incident occurred at a shopping mall in Fort Myers on June 27. One of the customers also told Corben that Costco employees escorted Maples out of the store following the outburst. The video, which has been retweeted nearly 40,000 times, eventually found its way to Tedd Todd Insurance CEO Charley Todd, who addressed the situation on Twitter. “He absolutely does not represent our values and no longer works at our agency,” Todd tweeted Tuesday afternoon. “We are working with Allstate to release a statement shortly. Wear a mask.”

Congradulations teachers, you're the new "heroes".

Look forward to Trump supporters getting physically aggressive with anyone who questions reopening in school board meetings.

As bad as the past few monthes have been with his aimless, negligent response it is going to be so much worse. He and his campaign have clearly made the calculation that straddling some kind of line where Trump nips at the heels of hesitant governors, but also doesn't go all in on a counter response is likely to cost him from both sides.

So he is going all in. He knows how badly it's gonna look when teachers die. He knows how bad it's gonna look when kids die. But he figures if he rams the message through hard enough people will accept that they either have to choose between safety and the economy.

I love that the Trump administration is pushing to send kids back to school, when no state is currently meeting the Trump administration's Guidelines for Safely Reopening America.

Also there feels to be a disconnect between:

We *must* send K-12 and higher ed students back to school this fall

and

Public schools are a left wing indoctrination camps and we must look at alternative methods of teaching our children.

Warning of serious brain disorders in people with mild coronavirus symptoms (The Guardian)

Quote

Doctors may be missing signs of serious and potentially fatal brain disorders triggered by coronavirus, as they emerge in mildly affected or recovering patients, scientists have warned.

Neurologists are on Wednesday publishing details of more than 40 UK Covid-19 patients whose complications ranged from brain inflammation and delirium to nerve damage and stroke. In some cases, the neurological problem was the patient’s first and main symptom.

The cases, published in the journal Brain, revealed a rise in a life-threatening condition called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (Adem), as the first wave of infections swept through Britain. At UCL’s Institute of Neurology, Adem cases rose from one a month before the pandemic to two or three per week in April and May. One woman, who was 59, died of the complication.

Scientists join forces to investigate airborne risk of coronavirus (The Guardian)

Quote

A major research effort is under way to understand whether Covid-19 can spread through tiny airborne particles that are released by infected people and remain suspended in the air for hours.

Scientists are working alongside sanitary engineers at the World Health Organization to investigate how tiny aerosols bearing the virus may be released into the environment; whether they are spread around rooms by air-conditioning units; and how infectious the particles may be.

Among the studies being conducted are experiments with caged hamsters to assess whether viruses wafting through the air in hospitals and other high-risk settings are sufficiently potent to spread infections.

On a June 30 flight on American Airlines from Dallas to Newark, Joy Gonzalez, an aviation engineer based in Seattle, found herself seated at a window with two older passengers beside her in the middle and aisle seats. In order to gain more social distance, she and the aisle passenger both moved to seats behind them where two rows were empty. But before takeoff, a flight attendant ordered them back to their assigned seats, telling them they had not paid for those exit row seats, which are more expensive.

A second flight attendant listened to Ms. Gonzalez’s request, consulted with the other attendants and gave her two options:

Take your assigned seat or return to the gate and pay for the exit row. As the flight was on the verge of departing, she sat down. “The irony of then hearing on the public address system, ‘Your health and safety is our top priority,’” said Ms. Gonzalez, who posted photos of the full and empty rows on Instagram. “Behind me, seats went empty and wasted while I was squished and touching someone.”
