What's better about it than the PS1 modded version?

The War of the Lions is significantly different, most importantly the English translation is much more accurate, done by the same great translator who did Yasumi Matsuno's other games Vagrant Story, FF12, and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (the remaster) (he did not do the original PS1 version).

There are some spoilers, but here's a list of the many improvements/differences between the two (unless PS1 mods somehow restore these, which I don't think would be possible): https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Tactics_version_differences

Skimming the list the mod does improve some of those things such as the oil thing (there are other mods too but I haven't tried those)

As for the translations and such I don't really care, the story is nothing special and I really only play it for the battles. I certainly wouldn't play a lower res / mobile version of it.

It looks beautiful through PSP emulation on PC, and the story is one of the reasons the game is so highly regarded! I'm just saying, it's understood that it's the better and more balanced version of the game.

FF7R is ready to go for me as well, preloaded and everything. I'm excited to see what's up with this game.

So, I did load up my FFVII save on my PS3. I've just made it to the top of the Shinra building (after a lot of stairs and some minor puzzling) and I might give a go at completing this. I had a PS1 (well, my Granddad did) but I never really played it, so this is my first time with the game.

It'll be interesting to see how I go as it's both a 23 year old game and one where I have no nostalgia for it either.

I did however just realise that I can swap around the O and X buttons, so I can use X to select things and O to run. 5 hours in and I've just found that out (and 4 years of having the game by my download date)

played about 40min or so last night (right up to first boss) and the combat has seemed pretty smooth so far.  my biggest fear was getting used to the combat menu in them middle of the real time fighting.  i guess ill need to get used to switching characters when in groups at this point so i dont solely focus on Cloud

If anyone is like me and has been waiting the past few days for it to come back in stock on Amazon I checked this morning and it was :)

I normally buy games digitally but I had a $25 gift card for Amazon I've been wanting to use, and it's nice to have a physical copy of a game like this.. Normally don't buy games full price at launch, either, but I just can't resist FF7R.

The only problem is it isn't The War of the Lions version, which is immensely better than the original PS1 version. It has an excellent mobile port which I played it on (and I don't usually game on phones). So much so I would never recommend anyone play Tactics again if it isn't The War of the Lions version.

You can emulate PSP games on PC now though, so I recommend playing The War of the Lions version that way for the best experience. Like with other emulators, you can greatly improve the graphics, framerate, etc. as well. If I were to ever play the original FF7 again, I'd play it via PC emulation for sure (or the "official" PC version with mods I guess).

I haven't played any of the modded versions or the emulated ones, but I remember War of the Lions being a great remake for PSP. The one gripe I remember is the inexplicable slowdown the version suffered on some of the beefier spell effects. Other than that the game managed to pull off the rare feat of making an already great game better in almost every way.

I'm on chapter 3 right now. It's good so far! My only quibbles are 1) the camera is in way too tight on Cloud, I wish the FOV was much wider (PC version may fix this) and 2) what the fuck was up with the dementors-like scene when Cloud meets Aerith? It just looked . . . stupid. Otherwise, everything else has been pretty great, if very linear, so far.

Man I wasn't really interested in this (lord knows I have enough games to play), but the reviews are reeeeeeeally starting to pique my curiosity.

It's actually a lot of fun. I mean, it's still a JRPG, but the anime conventions are done well and the dialogue is at least banter-y and makes sense. Everyone gets much larger speaking parts and they bother to get into the details. It's by no means a perfect game (the combat system is overly complicated at first and the UI is shit) but it's a blast so far.

In a lot of ways it's like RE3 remaking the original. The remake of RE3 was cranked up to 11 in every area - bombastic, loud, action-y, but also thrilling and exhilarating. The graphics and music were second to none and the whole thing just played smoothly. FF7R is kind of like that - it's all a lot more than the original offered (both for good and ill) but it's all pretty slick and well done regardless. The background graphics, strangely, aren't as good as I would have hoped (probably because it's using UE4 engine), the graphics to me don't even measure up to FF15, but it's otherwise great graphically too. To be fair I played that in 4K on my PC and this is being played on my PS4 Pro on my 1080p TV. The music though - it really takes you back if you played the original, and it's hard to not claim the music does a lot of heavy lifting, in a good way.

Did you pull back the camera in the options menu? I assume so but just figured I'd ask anyway since when playing the demo a second time recently, that REALLY helped with some of my annoyance with it. That and making the camera control more sensitive.

I did! It's much better, it should be the default view. But I wish it was even wider. :)

AND PLEASE REMEMBER TO PATCH OUT THE SHITTY SLOWDOWN FROM THE PSP VERSION.

Oh god, if the slowdowns were patched in the PSN version..

I can confirm that the mobile port doesn't have any slowdown. The PSN version, I believe, is the original Tactics, not War of the Lions (well, you can get it on PSN, but it'll only play on PSP).

The PSN version does have WotL, and requires either a PSP or Vita to play it.  Last time I had it on my Vita it still lagged.  I'm actually surprised and disappointed this never got patched.

Man, I have to figure out how to schedule my JRPG goodness. I only just finished the first palace in P5R, but I also really want to play this.

That's kinda why I'm holding off on this. It looks better than I expected and I sort of want to play it now, but I'm just now getting back in a gaming mood and I'm trying to decide between Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Dragon Quest XI. I've got no shortage of RPGs to play.

Look, I don't know why I bought this game on a whim last night but I did. I REALLY enjoyed what I played so far. Beat the 1st boss and finished the first reactor area. I was actually sad I couldn't keep playing. The game hadn't fully installed yet and it forced me out of the game. 86GB was taking forever to download. I'm pretty sure I read Sony was capping PSN speeds with everything going on and it definitely felt like it.

The only thing that through me off was hearing the character Wedge speak. Matt Jones has such a distinct voice that I only associate him with Badger from Breaking Bad.
