I am TOTALLY SHOCKED that a guy who worked for Palmer Lucky and Mark Zuckerberg would participate in such a gathering.

Totally.

Shocked.

In any event, here's a picture from the last Basedcon:

I can smell the paternal disappointment.

Yeah I'm disappointed in this. I honestly admired this man for a long time. No he hasn't innovated the gaming world in many years, but he was instrumental in starting it up in its current state.

Yet another situation where you have to separate the works from the person.

Which you should do anyway. Only way you can truly enjoy artistic works.

That this is news shows how weird things have gotten.

As someone who knows nothing about basedcon, can someone explain what John Carmack has done wrong?

He is participating in in a con that leftists don’t approve of. That’s basically it. He hasn’t actually done anything, anything bad, just going to con.

its not even a gaming con, apparently. It’s for authors.

Yeah, no, I don’t go to any cons. I just don’t care who does or which they go to.

last con I went to was for wargaming, many years ago, and it was awful. Packed with people waiting hours to see the same stuff I could easily look at online.

Whether it's fair or not, he's a public figure to some degree and needs to be cognizant about how associating with certain groups not only comes across for his personal reputation, but provides possible implicit approval of the group. So it's difficult to accept the "I'm just friends with a few of the people involved and want to give my non-political views on certain topics."

I think the primary reason to go to a con these days is to meet with like-minded people and form relationships that would be more difficult to establish otherwise.

Why “BasedCon”?

In internet parlance, “based” means something like “in touch with reality.” Based behavior is the opposite of social justice activism, which is about meaningless virtue signaling and beating up strawmen. Some based beliefs include:

  • Men cannot give birth
  • Guns don’t kill people; people kill people
  • A fetus is a human being
  • Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried
  • Discriminating against white people is racism

BasedCon isn’t about pushing any particular ideology, but honest conversations have to start with a shared understanding of reality. If you think people with a certain skin color can’t be racist or you expect people to use made-up pronouns when talking about you, you may want to do a reality check before coming to BasedCon.

Leftists don't approve of? This just seems like a miserable group of white men more concerned about bigotry and trending culture wars than the fantasy/sci-fi con they're running. Ah yes, women having bodily autonomy is just another overreaction by the left.

I mean, it seems like standard conservative beliefs that have been around forever. It was bound to happen when even people who are mildly conservative have been dropped from cons because of public attacks on them. Hell, Colin Moriarty was dropped from PAX because of a twitter revolt, and he’s a long ways from far right. The guy publicly left the Republican party the day they nominated Trump.

this will only happen more as both sides push more division.

As a rich powerful white straight man, I get so annoyed at all of the people we've spent the last 200 years shitting on acting like that's a problem or something.

Why can't we just be free to say and do whatever we want at the expense of anyone we want? We're the one's in power and it's always been that way and we like it that way. If you have a problem with that just start your own society that's been carefully structured to keep your exact socioeconomic group at the top at the expense of others and get back to us in a few hundred years... until then, just shut the fuck up and stay in the place our system is designed to keep you in...

Wah...

WTF? Uh, no? Saying based is basically like saying "THIS" or "TRUE" in response. Maybe with a little Sicko thrown in.

I finally attempted to understand what "based" actually meant because of this story and I can safely say that I'm now at least two IQ points stupider for having done so.

Now THAT'S BASED

I feel like people use based in like 3 different ways, at least based on context I've seen it in:

1. Basically as a confirmation, like saying "true" but also with a sprinkle of some "and cool"

2. As some weird show of political alignment, i.e. virtue signaling "yeah you said something really controversial and probably extremely stupid, that's based" (this context sees it most often used as facetiously, like if a guy blows his balls off by doing the stupid gun-in-pants, finger-on-trigger meme, you might say "holy BASED")

3. Basically a slightly more extreme and more genuine version of 2, but specifically about social issues. This is where the real degenerate souls dwell, responding to acts of violence against groups of people they don't like as "based" as an example, but not always that extreme. Overturning Roe V Wade might be what this type of person calls based, I imagine there's often some incel overlap here.

It's just racists stealing words from black people again. Lil B invented the phrase. He's based god. Now white people are applying it to themselves.

Generally speaking, we're in a political environment today where the other is outright dismissed.  It's probably making us all dumber, and pushing impressionable people further down rabbit holes.

Yeah, no. It's not about echo chambers. You can go decades and decades back and see that conservatism has been about ridiculously obvious bigotry for ages. "Wokeism" on the other hand is just a new boogie man word for dipshits.

The lazy bothsidesism is fucking obnoxious and completely delusional.

Shit like "based," "chad," and other words / memes in the same orbit have been adopted by online goobers and bigots to the point that if I see someone online using them and I don't know them, I can assume they're an asshole or a bigot and be right often enough that it's a good way to let people snitch on themselves.

Or see...

I take it as a sign of a healthy, well adjusted person when they don’t know what things like based mean or backstories to national Twitter drama.

It’s embarrassing that woke is being uttered by people in power and used in insane daily speeches. Truly embarrassing stuff from like Desantis and his ilk, maybe more so for him since he’s going whole hog on making laws that go after it. It’s pathetic.

These things are started by professional grifters who are really good at it, and it’s just shorthand dog whistles for overtly racist / prejudiced people while ringing true to people who don’t think they are those things but at the same time “don’t like where this country’s going” or however they want to justify their bullshit.
