Maybe this doesn't include you, but "if the games tell you to do it, it is OK, but it is bad to do it on your own," is how a lot of people react.

Not what I was saying at all.

And we could have a whole other conversation about Rockstar’s problematic politics.

You can. Make sure you’re as far away from a station as possible when you rob it, it coming into town while you’re doing crime is begging for the law to show up.

Can I maintain speed next to it on my horse and jump onto it like I can do with riders (hitting Square I believe)?

I was just saying that R* has rewarded this kind of behavior  in their open world games, so it seems weird that so many people are upset. Maybe they always were and I never noticed, not that I care. I mean, killing the hooker to get your money back has been a thing since GTA3.

I feel like I have no fucking clue how to deal with the Wanted/law system still.

I'm putting on a full executioner hood before committing crimes and immediately change my outfit after getting out of sight right after if the law is alerted and they still magically know that it's Arthur Morgan. In short, nobody sees my face, I change my outfit after and still. I'm talking about some random area as well, not Valentine where I could reason that they recognize me.

I just don't get the rules and/or logic for that whole system. It seems arbitrary. I understand being able to chase witnesses, but in crowded areas, that doesn't work.

Yeah I wish we could just go around causing havoc without becoming wanted every five minutes.

Doesn't this kind of attn happen on every Rockstar release?  I still remember when Hillary tried to launch some investigation because she didn't like that you can sleep and kill prostitutes in video games lol.

I remember someone posting this awhile back.

You definitely don't. I never played RDR1 and I haven't hit a single moment where I thought 'if only I knew what had happened...'.

You for sure don’t need to play RDR1 to enjoy RDR2. That said there is an awful lot of connective tissue, both implied and overt, that I assume makes the experience pretty different if you’re coming in one way vs. the other Don’t think one is better but my perception of the characters that are in both is based on how RDR1 started and ended, and I assume everyone in 2 who isn’t in 1 is totally fucked.

Actually, I'm probably going to play RDR1 after this at some point anyway, so essentially I'll be playing it in order. It being a prequel works out that way I guess.

I continue to be amazed at the difference between the scope and detail of this game, and the small ways the it takes agency away from you. The best example is when you are and are not allowed to run. There have been a few times I've been told to hurry up, often in dire circumstances (cops! fire!), but I'm still not allowed to run. A similar issue comes up in "stealth" missions when you're with someone else, and you just have to listen to them and do exactly what they say. They'll give directions even when the guards are inches away, and you'll only trigger the next action when you take cover in a very specific place; and heaven forbid you try and take cover where they plan to, because the game won't let you and you'll just end up stranded in the open. Which is just one more way the cover system is terrible. I'm constantly getting stuck to the wrong thing or taking cover in the wrong direction.

In another circumstance I had to free a prisoner guarded by two men. I figured I could dead eye them both safely from a distance. My first shot goes off, right into the head of the nearest guard, only to be treated to a short failure cutscene where I see that exact guard shoot the prisoner. It would be less frustrating if it was a mission that remained stealthy, but killing those guards triggered a firefight anyways.

The dichotomy between the nearly absolute freedom you're given in broad ways and the complete lack of agency in small things remains my biggest complaint.

RDR will probably be a lot more impactful if you play 2 first, actually. They discussed this on waypoint, but the first didn’t really earn the scenes between you and your old gang mates. They just implied that some shit went down.

It kind of makes me want a RDR remastered with the new engine.

Honestly everyone’s rave reviews of the story and the later chapters is what’s keeping me going through this early stuff.

Also for fast travel. Can I only fast travel from that map in camp? Like I have to go back to camp to fast travel somewhere?

You can use stage coaches or trains to get from town to town if you've been there already. Check your map legend for the symbol.

Unrelated:

Has ANYONE been able to get away with a train robbery without a billion dollar bounty and/or dying? I tried for an hour of reloads tonight, so several times, and no matter how I approached it or how I was masked/dressed, it was a total mess.

I just spent 3 and a half hours playing this fucking game...:p

EDIT: Spent 5 and a half hour playing this game tonight. I'm hooked. Not sure if this going to be my personal GOTY just yet, It's got stiff competition from Spiderman and God of War, but its definitely in the running for sure. I haven't had this much fun exploring an open world since The Witcher 3.

Just when I got super pissed and was ready to call the game a piece of shit for its disgustingly stupid Wanted/Bounty system, I randomly explored for an hour and stumbled on a rival gang hideout, the Hanging Dog Ranch. I stealth killed four guys with my knife and then got into a massive gun fight include some gory-ass melee kills and executions, came out alive and now I'm in love again.

This game is like an abusive partner, I swear. I'll be reporting it for abuse one minute and asking it to come back and have sex with me the next.

I think that hideout will keep spawning more Odriscols till a later mission - 1) there is building that is locked with items you can't access inside (you can see via the window) 2) they were back the last time I rode by

Actually, I almost walked away until I realized you can climb the roof and there's an open window on the second floor that allows you access.

And that's cool actually. I love moments like that when the game finally explodes into free-flowing gun battles without mission restrictions.

I think you have to hunt down all the gang hideouts and then wipe out their head quarters. There's several gangs (I've come across three so far) and my progress stats show that I'm sixty something percent completing the O'Driscolls. So I don't know if their hideouts keep respawning enemies. There's a counter as to howmany hideouts you've found and "completed".

Jesus. Even the mission log is a mess. It’s got no organization at all. It even shows completed missions, but not all of them??

shit is weird. It’s like no one check it before thet released the game.

Anyway, made it to chapter 5 tonight. Story is really crazy now. Played for almost 6hrs straight. If I didn’t have shit to do tomorrow, I might’ve kept going.

Man... chapter 5

Spoiler

I’m at the point where i escaped from Guam and are on the ride back to shady belle...with that song playing....

That’s probably one of the most cinematic experiences I’ve ever had in a game.

Spoiler

After everything that’s happened. Lenny and Hosea dead. All your shit is gone. You’re in a worse predicament than before the bank robbery. Not sure if anyone is gonna even be there. The haze on the edges of screen really makes you feel like Arthur is just thinking about it all. Pure melancholy

Really just amazing.

Well, I'm pretty sure I have a game breaking bug. The main quest in chapter 6 "good by dead friend" won't advance for me. I've now retried it about 4 times. It always results in Dutch stopping to "wait" and then nothing happens. It won't trigger the next scene no matter what I do. I even tried playing some other quests and coming back to it. It still won't work. I've watched videos online and its supposed to trigger immediately. It doesn't.

Worse, I can't find any comments about this bug online so its just my game that's broken.

I got to chapter 3 today. I spent waaaay too much time hunting rabbits and wandering around, had to finally just focus and do some missions. The game is really growing on me the more I play, and I think that's mainly due to me giving up and accepting the control and animation quirks rather than struggle against them.

My Arthur is very bearded and wears a bloody bear's head as a hat. Makes for some interesting cutscenes.
