where do you check missions??? lol

I had no idea about this either and have absolutely no clue where to check...

I feel like I need a fucking instructions tome to engage with all its systems sometimes, so I ignore most of them and just go have my fun.

Check the game log. I’ll have to see exactly how I did this and report back. I can’t remember but I’m certain I did. It said this will continue later on in the story.

Where are you in the game?

You just have to be near the body and the animation is less than 2 seconds. He grabs their torso and picks something up, and it’s over.

I wonder if earlier in the game they pad it out?

Like I just did it in a whole field of bodies and running from body to body + the animation looks like he has urgency.

I’m about 10 or so hours in.  Purposefully taking it slow; don’t see RDR2 as the type of game I would enjoy marathoning.  I certainly haven’t spent enough time to experience all the game has to offer, but I do have a grasp of what the general gameplay loops and mission structure is like.  So far I just don’t find it to be all that engaging and oddly enough, immersive.  Think it could have been had Rockstar spent another 6 months or so dialing in the user experience so it’s flaws are less of a distraction.

Back to the topic at hand, I’m sorry but only less than 2 seconds to loot a body?  You really think that’s short for an action you often repeat 5, 10, 15 times in a row?    That’s just baffling to me.  I get that Arthur grabbing the torso adds some flavor to the animation, but it is quite excessive.  As I mentioned earlier, the lack of urgency to it does pull me out of the experience.

seems to work consistently enough for me. my only issue is actually getting up to speed, staying on the path, selecting cinematic mode, holding it down until it kicks in...all at the same time. many times ill veer off the path and get screwed up. but once engaged, it works well for me.  I did have one weird instance during a story mission where i was in a carriage and didnt feel like piloting, so i switched to cinematic, and they went left instead of right at a fork and wound up so fucking far away from the objective. lol. i wasnt paying attention and i noticed the yellow line was pointing in the opposite direction. i shouldve just let them go and see where they finally ended up.

You don’t have to get up to speed first.

Hold the cinematic regardless of your speed as long as you’re on a main road.

Keep holding it, no matter how fast you are going, it will auto go on the path. But keep holding it.

Then tap the run button until you are going the speed you want. You can go faster and slower even. As long as you’re holding that button down, it hasn’t locked the speed in.

Whenever you are satisfied, let it go. It’s pretty slick once you get the hang of it.

Kal is right that there are times it messes up, but it’s a lot more consistent than similar mechanics in other games. Like, give me a split in the road in the Witcher and roach is gonna pick the wrong one 50 percent of the time.

It doesn’t come off as lack of urgency though. I’m even willing to record a clip later. He’s certainly not sprinting around and grabbing stuff like a maniac, but short of doing the thing a lot of games do where the character makes like a half-hearted arm swing and suddenly he’s picked up an item and stored it, it looks good.

Have you tried fire fights and/or looting etc. in first person by the way? I can't confirm if it's actually true but it seems like many wind-up animations don't have to take place and therefore some things feel snappier to me, looting corpses being one of them.

The methodical looting quite simply doesn't fit in the context of needing to flee the scene before the law shows up.

Wow that's interesting.  Wonder if Rockstar had some negative user feedback that lead to this.

IF, that's if, I'm actually right about this, I think it's just a matter of the first person view not having to adjust Arthur's body for every interaction. This is what often makes his interactions with the world seem longer than they are, his body always 'realistically' shifts towards the item/person/horse. When you play next, put the game in first person and loot, then in regular third person and loot again, see what you think.

To me it feels like most interactions are less laborious in first person. I've been playing the game in first person constantly outside of horse riding which I keep 3rd person and it's perfectly viable and to me, snappier. That being said, it also demands control option tweaks.

Give it a shot.

Edit:

Here are some first person looting and other animations:

Watching this, I'm probably wrong as it does appear the body still adjusts. I can't compare directly right now, no more time, but it 'feels' quicker in the game including general movement.

You can see current missions, challenges, and I think recent missions by hitting left on the d-pad.

@atom631 Just tap left on the d-pad. Don’t hold it just tap slightly. It’ll bring up the LOG where you can check tasks and challenges.  If you hold the d-pad left it will open your journal.

What risk? Do you loot in the middle of a gun fight or something? Kill everyone then loot lol.

There are people that I didn't even kill, I go to loot the body and some random npc sees me doing it and accuses me of murder then runs off to alert LE. That's the risk/reward, a passerby will report you for looting and you'll potentially wind up with a bounty on your head.

They'll report you whether you are looting or not. I usually Chase them down and threaten them.

Looting does buy time for the event to trigger.  Rockstar designers clearly wanted this situation to happen a lot, even when seemingly no one is around.

As anoyed as I am with the looting pace,  I do get that a quicker reporting timeframe would be necessary to counteract shorter looting animations. That would also get frustrating real fast.  I don’t have like it though to understand it.  To me, neither scenario sounds great.

I've looted and not have people come or report the authorities on me.

I have too, but I’ve also had the opposite happen where reporting has felt very out of place.  Seems to occur more frequently than not, but maybe that’s just been my experience.

Guy got banned on youtube for killing that feminist NPC.

Real NPC's banning people who kill fantasy NPC's.

It's all so stupid and complete fake outrage. Youtube claiming to ban a guy for promoting real life violence because he showed violent gameplay from a game that let's you kill everyone. What are they going to do ban every other gaming channel too? Someone got smart though because the guy got his his channel unbanned earlier today.

@Biggie was correct. The mission is listed in your log when you tap, not hold, left on the D-pad. It says "to be continued at a later time" or something along those lines for me.

Black Belle was a cool lady.

i gotta check out the log then. after 30+hrs still figuring out the systems in this game. lol

I feel like I have no fucking clue how to deal with the Wanted/law system still.

I'm putting on a full executioner hood before committing crimes and immediately change my outfit after getting out of sight right after if the law is alerted and they still magically know that it's Arthur Morgan. In short, nobody sees my face, I change my outfit after and still. I'm talking about some random area as well, not Valentine where I could reason that they recognize me.

I just don't get the rules and/or logic for that whole system. It seems arbitrary. I understand being able to chase witnesses, but in crowded areas, that doesn't work.

Yeah. Also the bounty hunters must be telepaths, because I’ll be in a remote area that I get into through lands where I’m not wanted at all, I’ll not have encountered another NPC in minutes, and they’re on me after 2 minutes of hunting. The roadblocks in this game also make no fucking sense. How do these people know where I’m going to be?

I feel like all this would be totally fine by me if getting to that place weren't so excessively easy. It's not ruining the game for me or anything but it's something I wish they could've spent some more time on and make some obvious rules for so I can properly engage with it all instead of just tolerating it because I'm having fun otherwise.

The game consistently eschews realism in favor of convenience for the sake of punishing the player, but not the other way around, and it frustrates me at points. I'd be cool with this level of aggression as well if there were better ways to deal with some of it where you don't always feel like you're teetering on a reload or death for doing something like hitting the wrong button.

ive finally been getting used to using some FP mode.  when i know there will be a gun fight either during a mission or out in the world i change to FP and it makes it so much easier.  everything else i prretty much stay in TP

As a tip since many may not be using it, first person mode makes default movement inside houses, and general movement during gun fights etc., markedly faster. It feels like the speed that is missing between third person Arthur's molasses walk and sprint. Especially inside buildings it makes a big difference.

Ignoring the specific context of this case (I don’t know it), your read of the situation is way too myopic, hopefully not intentionally so.

It’s easy to imagine an inappropriate use of a game world to communicate a message that violates the terms of use of a public media platform.  Someone could clip together clips of the player killing an NPC of a certain race and combine that with their own commentary to make a wholly inappropriate piece of media despite whether or not the game allows you to do it.

I don’t expect to change someone’s mind who uses the real life NPC meme though.

Can I rob a moving train by the way? If so, what's the best way to go about that without immediately being swarmed by probably 30 cops and a bounty of $8,000,000,000?

You can. Make sure you’re as far away from a station as possible when you rob it, it coming into town while you’re doing crime is begging for the law to show up.

Dastardly is a secret achievement/trophy in Red Dead Redemption. Place a hogtied woman on the train tracks and witness her death by train. Lasso and hogtie a woman, and then transport her to a traintrack, leave her there and watch as the passing train kills her.
