The Game Awards 2020 (10 December 2020) OT (The Last of Us Part II wins GOTY!))

On one hand, given what I like in games, if I were to pick a winner based on what I feel is the best game, something like Doom Eternal, Ghost of Tsushima, or The Last of Us Part II would win because that's the style of game I like, but if basing in cultural relevance (as well as quality, obviously) how could it not be Animal Crossing New Horizons? The game took 2020 by storm! Hugely popular, came out at the right time just as we entered lockdown, everyone was talking about it. It pretty much is THE game of 2020. Even people who weren't into the series before got this game, and even non gamers; my girlfriend got a Switch Lite so she could play this with me, and she's loving the game.

When was the cut off for release date to be eligible?

Nov 20, which is why the GA’s should be in January. Last year, SW:JFI might have made the list, the actual year it released. Cyberpunk (which could be horrible, but could also be amazing) will be in the same possible position.

I understand why emmy’s have a different schedule (I believe its sept to aug). The seasons of tv necessitate it. but games are much more like movies, in that they are a single experience, and many release over the holidays because its incredibly lucrative.

anyway, I expect TLoU to take most of the awards it’s nominated for.

tbh, this seems like an incredibly hard year to do a GOTY with six nominees. Just looking at Metacritic, there's a lot of 90+ games and plenty of notable high 80 games.

Persona 5 Royal - 95

The Last of Us Part II - 93

Hades - 93

Half-Life: Alyx - 93

Ori and the Will of the Wisps - 93

Microsoft Flight Simulator - 91

Demon's Souls Remake - 91

Crusader Kings III - 91

F1 2020 - 91

Spelunky 2 - 91

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 90

Yakuza: Like A Dragon - 90

Dreams - 89

DOOM Eternal - 88

Tetris Effect: Connected - 87

Final Fantasy VII Remake - 87

13 Sentinels - Aegis Rim - 86

Marveks Spider-Man: Miles Morales - 85

Nioh 2 - 85

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time - 85

Assassin's Creed Valhalla - 85

Ghost of Tsushima - 83

I mean, I know we're not gonna see sports games in these games of events in the GOTY running, and there's a big difference in my eyes to how people reacted to GoT versus Crash 4 in terms of notability (nothing against the latter), but I feel you could ask 10 people who played all of these games what their Top 6 were and you'd get a lot of different answers.

This is one of the problems I have with the Game Awards. Yeah it should be in January, but it's too much of a marketing event, and trying to push last minute sales of these games before Christmas.

Ori 2?  The Pathless?  Monster Train?

Hades will probably win anyways, so it doesn't matter.

Ori technically isn't an indie game.

I also think what constitutes an "indie" game anymore is getting a bit blurred. The Outer Worlds was technically an indie game, even though it had a fairly massive staff and development cycle. Same with Hellblade. Ori is not, as they're owned by Microsoft, but has a much smaller team. Do games published by Devolver or Focus count as indie games? Where is the line drawn?

I think it's becoming a somewhat useless qualifier.

Moon Studios is not owned by Microsoft, they just own the IP and published it.

Sometimes playing the long game can really pay off, gamers, and we’re really seeing it this week as one fantasy legend just cashed in all his chips. That’s right! After over a year of feigning interest in helping out drafting the story to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s latest title Elden Ring, George R.R. Martin just bolted from the FromSoftware offices with all the topless elf concept art his arms could carry!
