Perhaps the travel ban from China helped a bit. But, I can say that I came back from Italy (Venice) on February 20th and they weren't doing a damn thing to check me or my wife's temperature or anything like that when we arrived Stateside in Atlanta.

If we had used the time that the travel ban bought us, we'd be in much better shape

Ugh, the SMA community, especially in the New York area, is not good right now. A lot are scared their aides are going to get sick and get them sick. People are spreading critical care criteria being drafted in some states which specifically denies care to those with SMA. A lot of people with SMA are on vents normally and terrified that if they are hospitalized their personal vent will be taken by the hospital. SMA community is normally very up beat take on the world, not now.

Italian coronavirus deaths jump, dashing hopes that worst was over

Quote

Fatalities in Italy from coronavirus have surged in the last 24 hours, the Civil Protection Agency said on Tuesday, dashing hopes the epidemic in the world’s worst hit country was easing after more encouraging numbers in the previous two days.

The death toll rose by 743 on Tuesday, the second highest daily tally since the outbreak emerged in northern regions on Feb. 21, and up steeply from the 602 recorded on Monday.

Russian official questions Putin over coronavirus

Quote

When Vladimir Putin sat down for a briefing on coronavirus, Moscow’s mayor had a tough message for him: the number of infected people is far higher than you’ve been told, he said, and Russia’s healthcare system could be overrun.

Breaking with official tallies that show the disease’s conservative growth in Russia, Sergei Sobyanin told Putin on Tuesday that a serious situation was developing as the disease spread in Moscow and in the regions, and that the problem “would emerge sooner or later”.

Trump gets good marks in the Gallup poll for his handling of the crisis.

Sixty percent of Americans indicated they approve of the way the president is steering the country in response to the pandemic, while 38% said they disapprove.

Nearly all Republicans surveyed in the poll, 94%, said they approved of his response, while 60% of independents and 27% of Democrats said the same, according to Gallup.

The poll, which had a margin of error of 4 percentage points, comes on the heels of other public surveys that have shown Trump’s popularity creeping upward recently.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted between March 18 and 19 found that 55% of people approve of the way Trump is handling the outbreak.

I don't really understand how he can be polling so well, unless there's some factor of mindlessly clinging to the leader in a time of crisis or something. Does anyone else have any explanation?

He has done a terrible job "leading" us during this pandemic. Pretty much everything we are doing right is in spite of Trump, yet he somehow gets the credit. Everything wrong with how we are responding is his fault, such as his careless words about certain drugs, his admin failing miserably early on with testing kits, downplaying the seriousness of the virus ("HOAX"), ignoring intelligence agencies months ago about it and instead listening to the Chinese leader on a phone call, and now talking about sending everyone back to work and packing the churches on Easter!

Americans like Trump. I've come to the conclusion it isn't so much about what he does, but it's about how he does it. They like how he does things because it's entertaining and it somehow soothes them, even when he does things that are awful for them and the country.

Trump is likely getting credit for everything local and state officials have some in their respective districts. Also, Americans are REALLY bad at understanding risk. Since they don't know anyone that has died them her must be doing something right since that's a good thing. Most people really don't understand how things are getting worse because fold in this country don't understand statistics. It really is a subject that should be taught to kids in middle and high school.

Who knows what'll happen, because it really does seem like nothing will tank his numbers sometimes, but it should be said that we're really not even in the bad part of this yet. All of us understand how bad this is because we read the news and can see what's happening in countries that are a week ahead of us on the curve. If you don't really follow the news, your job hasn't been affected, and no one in your immediate orbit has a serious case of the virus, this might still be weird background noise. And because the shutdowns have all been mandated at the state and local levels, you might not be blaming Trump for that. It's 1000% his fault that we've had to shut down this severely, of course, but if you're not read up on the lack of testing and hospital preparedness, there's no reason for you to know that.

I think the numbers will look starkly different a week or two from now.

Americans like Trump because he is a reflection of not only who we are but who a lot of us wish to be.

For sure. He is getting credit for the actions of governors and mayors, but his strategy is now to distance himself from their actions some so he can't be blamed for the economic fallout from shut ins. He is trying to weave through this thing 100% for political gain and is doing absolutely nothing beneficial for the country as a leader.

Meanwhile he's feeding his base a strong diet of dogwhistles and red meat.

Yeah, but it's an easy win for him. If things work out in spite of everything he does, hell get credit for leading the country through this historic event. He'll be Giuliani all over again. If it blows up in his face, it's not his fault, the world hasn't seen something this horrific in over a hundred years.

The only reason most presidents wouldn't play this game is because the pieces are lives of Americans. Trump, however, could not care less and there is nobody in the media with a large enough audience to call him out on it. Maybe some comedians, but they're comedians do nobody cares.

It never ceases to amaze me how some religious people are so willing to cheapen their faith. Hemmer is Catholic, I believe. So on one side of the scale, you have god made flesh, come to earth to die for our sins, literally rising from the dead on the third day. And on the other side, stores could open up again. I don’t get it.

Everyone is looking at NY but Louisiana has the fastest growth of new cases anywhere in the world right now, and death rate is twice ny's. Testing is a massive problem, the State went from 1 case two weeks ago to over 1700 today.

Two reasons. Black people and the raw numbers aren't big enough to impress people. Americans really don't understand growth trends, so until Louisiana's numbers surpass New York's they'll continue to be ignored. Just watch how soon Louisiana will be a "problem nobody saw coming".
