Theoretically, a sound case could have been made for going after Manafort, though. Thing is, if Trump hadn’t fomented an insurrection at the Capitol in an attempt to overturn a lawful election, this might have helped his public image and convinced people (conservative people) who were once on the fence about him to come back to his camp. He had dress rehearsals with staff for moving the documents at Marashithole and into a SUV for Bedminster. He is such a corrupt asshole and I hope they take a look at his wife’s burial site. This was a case were I initially fell into the "dumb Trump" defense trap. When the the raid happened and we got the preliminary facts I figured it was legitimately a case of the moron not knowing what he could and couldn't take. But the longer things have went on, it just looks more and more malicious. I remember a couple months back someone on here posted a video of an interview he did where he volunteered the idea that they paid one of the other presidents to return certain documents and it was one of those "holy shit, it really is the worst case scenario" moments for me. The fact that was on his mind and he throws it out there apropos of nothing in an interview really does suggest that was his state of mind. He took the docs to fucking sell them back(or maybe even sell the secrets). He really is the type of sociopathic rich person that would ruin someone's life to make 10 bucks and then proudly brag about it for the next 5 years.

Signifyin(g)Monkey
To make an imperfect Chinese analogy, Bush Jr. was bad in the way Mao’s Great Famine was bad. Trump was bad in the way Mao’s Cultural Revolution was bad. In both cases, Maoism (the Reagan paradigm) was the source of the badness, even though it nonetheless helped Mao win China’s independence. (i.e., neoliberalism/neoconservatism probably helped the US and the West win the Cold War, but set the stage for its long-term decline by helping to establish the preconditions for the ‘08 GFC and the disaster of the Afghanistan/Iraq misadventures, which marked the effective end of unipolar American hegemony, and paved the way for Trump and his ability to whip the now-discontented populace into a Cultural Revolution-style frenzy)

You could still buy an AR15 almost anywhere in the country, it just precluded them being sold with certain accessories (which you could add later legally). The assault weapon ban was not the reason for less shootings, the AR platform just wasn’t nearly as popular or well known at the time. It was only with the advent of the iraq war and tacticool movement that made it a popular rifle. The ban had no part in it, the war did though. The ban made the AR-15 popular, as it was seen as something taboo. I would argue that the ban cranked up gun culture by a considerable amount, and further bans (or talks of bans) will just make it more extreme. Not sure I agree with you on this particular point, but this reminded me that several of my coworkers who were formerly employed by gun manufacturers confirm that manufacturers actually think it’s bad for business when we have a Republican president in office, because gun sales go way up under Democrats, owing to the ‘Democrat=gun control’ association. I don’t personally think that’s a good argument against gun control in and of itself, but it is a dynamic to consider, regardless of where you fall on the issue.
