What games did you spend a surprising amount of time on?

A friend of mine messaged me yesterday while messing around with his new PS5 and stumbled across a seemingly new (?) feature that lets you see your friends' play times. I asked him to hit me with a few and I was pretty damn shocked by these two:

Hotline Miami 2 - somewhere around 80 hours

Bloodborne - somewhere around 330 hours

I mean, I knew I played both of these a lot but...I said goddamn!

So what are yours?

330 in Bloodborne sounds excessive.

I have about 300 hours in Stardew Valley

Over 250 hours in Medieval II: Total War, and that's just on Steam, I owned a disc version of the game for a long time before that

Steam says I have 142 hours in Abzu, but I'm pretty sure the reason for that was I left the game on before going out of town for a few days.

I can't track my playtime in The Sims 3 or The Sims 4, but I'm sure it's a lot. I probably dump a hundred hours or so into The Sims every year for the past decade.

I think the most surprising is fallout 4. 113 hours apparently, I didn't even really like that game that much.

OH! 55 hours into Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. That is the best kart racing game of all time, and I'm not even kidding. So good, so balanced, so challenging, so rewarding. Playing Mario Kart afterwards felt like taking candy from a baby (until you play against people online in Mario Kart, then you realize how much you suck)

I don’t know of any that have surprised me. Maybe Mad Max? I beat it, but sometimes I look back and wonder why I spent 33 hours with it because it wasn’t all that fun.

Same here. Almost 40 hours. The combat in that game can be fun, but fuck the vehicle combat with a pineapple. And the world is so boring.

Mad Max is one of those frustrating things because it was like, mostly a good game. It just didn't quite get there, and was definitely way too fucking bloated.

Yeah, too much bloat and a really dull world. I was glad when I beat it so I could be done.

I do agree, the combat was decent. I just didn’t love much else.

I keep wondering when any dev will realize that riding horses, driving cars and combat involving either of these is the antithesis of fun in these types of games.

I don't have the hour count, but I think Left 4 Dead might be my single most played game of all time.  What's surprising about it is that I continue to this day to just play the campaign mode on expert, on consoles and without mods where there's really not a whole lot of content to begin with.

I've actually never played that one assuming it was online multiplayer only. It's currently really cheap on Steam so I might actually check it out. I could use a simple, fun FPS.

I mean, developers keep putting escort missions in games despite it being a meme at this point, so I doubt it will ever happen. "Make me focus on two things that I can't focus on and perform at the same time (like driving and shooting)" isn't fun. There isn't a strategy, it's just "pay attention and hope you don't die." There's no thought involved.

Twisted Metal had it right. If you're going to do vehicle combat, play Twisted Metal: Black first. Or shit, even Mario Kart (or better yet Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed). Then come back to your design philosophy.

While you can definitely play offline with bots, it's preferable to play online, especially at higher difficulties.  That said, the online stuff is certainly tolerable if you're like me and mostly avoid online shooters.  It's cooperative (unless you want to play the vs. mode), and most players know what they're doing.  Make sure to get Left 4 Dead 2 since they ported all of the Left 4 Dead 1 maps into the game along with all of the bonus DLC and such.  I still prefer the first game for some key balancing reasons (and the maps are much, much better), but the second game is the one with the largest and most active community.  I consider it one of the best, most fun, simple, and tightly designed games ever made.

I put over 800 hours into Dragon Quest IX. For XI I was under 250. After finishing the main stuff in IX, I continued playing grottos to farm materials for crafting and would check the online shop for the daily online only gear. I probably finished the game after around 200 hours and after that each morning I would temporarily switch my WiFi from WPA to WEP so that my DS could get internet to check the shop and then I'd run grottos before bed for over a year. The scary thing is that wasn't even a full completionist playthrough. There were accolades (achievements) such as for playing 1000 hours of single player and 1000 hours of co-op, that I didn't get. I defeated all the optional bosses from past games but when you beat them you have the option to level them up (the drops change at different level ranges) and I didn't max them all out, I just leveled them up enough to get all the drops.

I've played Final Fantasy VI many times but it's probable that single time through DQIX was still more than all my FFVI playthroughs combined.

I tend to stick with one game for long periods of time. Like, right now, I've been replaying Skyrim, trying to find a lot of the places I never found before. I've put in about 300 hours on it so far. But my overall most played game (at least according to Steam) is Star Trek Online, which I stopped playing at 4,426 hours. Yeah, I know some people have absurd amounts of time in games, but that is my overall largest played game. WoW might be a second, but I don't know how many hours that is as I haven't signed into that for a couple of years now.

From what I recall, FFVI doesn't take as long as you would think. I think the last time I played through it I was in the 35-40 hour mark, and that included spending time beefing up Gau, which I normally don't bother with.

Yeah, but after the first time which was still something like 60-70 hours, I would bother with getting most of the Rages in addition to everything else so it would still take a while. I can't remember how many times I've played the game but it's probably 6-8.

I’m afraid to look at my play times in Animal Crossing (any of them) or Pokémon (any of them).

Although...those games are designed to for you to pour tons of hours into them. So I guess it’s not that surprising.

I’ve dumped an embarrassing amount of hours into the various Street Fighter IV games, I know that.

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2... six playthroughs, one with each class, making different choices everytime. Pretty sure I've seen everything there is to see in those games. Dragon Age Origins... same thing. Played through the game with each origin and I'm pretty sure I've done everything in that game too... just started up ANOTHER character :p

Dude... Dragon Age: Origins... I have to have played through that game AT LEAST five times. Fuck me, what a fucking game. And every playthrough was probably what, 40 hours?

I haven't played the original trilogy since I finished Mass Effect 3, but I'm sure I'll do the trilogy all over again when Legendary Edition drops.

Another game I put a hell of a lot of time in and this is going way back, is Tekken 3. . . .Tekken Ball Mode.   My roomate and I put a stupid amount of time into that silly thing.
