Othering is all Trump knows, and whether to appease the GOP base(which is just the Trump base now) or because the lazy thinking from the top has trickled down it seems like these GOP governers are going to run with it. I guess when you're a climate denier running a state that is set to be underwater in the lifetime of some of your current constituents denying reality comes pretty easy. It will be interesting(and possibly horrifying) to see how far they will go with this. At first we kept out the Chinese. Now it's New Yorkers. If a state like Alabama or Missisippi starts blowing up I expect Republican governers will start locking down populous cities on their own states that will be getting hit the hardest. And, as we are already seeing with New York, there will be heavy undertones of partisanship involved as most big cities schew Democratic. CitizenVectron
Perfect example of the Iron Law of Institutions: The people who control institutions care first and foremost about their power within the institution rather than the power of the institution itself. Some mid or upper-level administrator became personally insulted by that doctor's behaviour and saw it as harmful to their own power, so the doctor had to go.
CitizenVectron
This post from Resetera makes me fucking sick: Quote Some late night observations: -Trump orders states to buy their own resources and then strategically outbids them at the last minute when they do manage to secure orders for critical medical supplies. -Trump has vendors cut off states like Michigan due to personal grudges with governors. -Trump sends Florida 200% of its requests from the national emergency stockpile (with more en route) while starving MA, ME, CO, CA, NJ, NY and NM. CO got a single day's worth of supplies while CA received 170 broken ventilators; Maine received barely 5 percent of its requests and we all know how poorly NY is being treated at the moment. -Arizona is now also receiving its full requests from the Feds. -South Carolina, like Florida, has also already received two full shipments of supplies as of yesterday. The post is HERE, and includes links for each of those points. Like, can you imagine a world in which the President of the US directs aid to be sent to the states that voted for him (or are likely to again) and not ones that are "against" him? Imagine if 9/11 happened under Trump and both NYC and Florida were hit. Just imagine.
CitizenVectron
N.Y.C.’s 911 System Is Overwhelmed. ‘I’m Terrified,’ a Paramedic Says. What happened in Italy is happening in NYC: Quote Because of the volume, emergency medical workers are making life-or-death decisions about who is sick enough to take to crowded emergency rooms and who appears well enough to leave behind. They are assessing on scene which patients should receive time-consuming measures like CPR and intubation, and which patients are too far gone to save. Quote Three weeks ago, the paramedics said, most coronavirus calls were for respiratory distress or fever. Now the same types of patients, after having been sent home from the hospital, are experiencing organ failure and cardiac arrest. “We’re getting them at the point where they’re starting to decompensate,” said the Brooklyn paramedic, who is employed by the Fire Department. “The way that it wreaks havoc in the body is almost flying in the face of everything that we know.”

Commissar SFLUFAN
The Death of American Competence (Foreign Policy) Washington’s reputation for expertise has been one of the greatest sources of its power. The coronavirus pandemic may end it for good. Quote Over the past 25 years, however, the United States has done a remarkable job of squandering that invaluable reputation for responsible leadership and basic competence. The list of transgressions is long: there is former President Bill Clinton’s irresponsible dalliance with a White House intern, former President George W. Bush’s administration’s failure to heed warnings of a terrorist attack before 9/11, the Enron and Madoff scandals, the bungled responses to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Maria in 2017, the inability to either win or end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the ill-advised interventions in Libya, Yemen, Syria, and elsewhere, the Wall Street meltdown of 2008, the Boeing 737 Max debacle, the Republican-led gridlock in Washington, and so on. Nor should we forget the long-concealed criminal misdeeds of Harvey Weinstein (and many others) and the sordid tale of the very well-connected Jeffrey Epstein, whose conveniently timed demise in a New York jail may prevent us from ever knowing the full extent of his—and others’—misconduct. And all the while the United States told itself it was the greatest country in the world, with the ablest officials, the best-run businesses, the most sophisticated financial firms, and the most virtuous leaders. Instead, former Soviet Premier Nikolai Ryzhkov’s description of life in the Soviet Union may be a more accurate description of American life than Americans would like to admit: “[We] stole from ourselves, took and gave bribes, lied in the reports, in newspapers, from high podiums, wallowed in our lies, hung medals on one another. And all of this—from top to bottom and from bottom to top.”
Commissar SFLUFAN
Spain’s coronavirus death toll rises by 838 overnight to 6,528 Quote Spain awoke to its third week under near-total lockdown on Sunday, as the government met to approve a strengthening of measures and the coronavirus death toll rose by a record 838 cases overnight to 6,528. Second only to Italy in fatalities, Spain also saw infections rise to 78,797 from 72,248 the day before. The number of confirmed cases also increased to 14,336 from 13,213 on Saturday, it said.
