believe 7 Doors... is an even worse American edit of the film with a much worse soundtrack. As far as I recall at least. I think it's also censored, the original is extremely gory. Ironically the gore and soundtrack are the coolest parts.

Its a Fulci movie , thats his schtick .

All of a Sudden: 6/10 - This is a Chinese film from the late '90s and this DVD was a bit dated. There is no subtitle option, instead they are embedded into the video along with the Cantonese. The translation is rough to say the least, like google translate type of quality.

That being said the movie feels like an ode to one of those '90s erotic thrillers. This one is more of a mystery but doesn't quite make any sense. The film begins with the apparent suicide of a woman, it turns out that woman was a secretary who was having an affair with her boss. But she loved the boss. The boss was married, so the husband of the woman who died kidnaps the wife of the boss but then the boss' wife and the kidnapper fall in love, but suddenly it turns out the husband wanted to kill his wife but... yeah it goes on. In any case I think it was a twist one too many but is marginally enjoyable. There was a "wow" moment that made me kind of do a raspberry sound out loud so it was able to get a reaction from me one way or the other :p

The Lost Pirate Kingdom - 7/10

It's a 6 part docudrama. I'm a sucker for pirate related things. I like that Netflix has started doing the docudrama thing that History channel used to do when they actually made historical content. The new one about the Sengoku Jidai looks pretty good, too. I think they also have one about the Roman Empire.

Leprechaun 3 - 8/10

Had two friends over for a small, sorta socially-distanced St. Patrick's Day shindig. If you love some total schlock cinema, this flick is great and really funny.

I think that's the last Leprechaun I saw. I missed out when he went to space and the hood.

In The Hood is amazing, it's so absurdly fucking stupid.

My best memory of these movies is Leprechaun 2. There's a scene in the movie where the chick disrobes (well it's an illusion) and this guy is mesmerized by her tits which are actually spinning fans. We had this idiot friend and he says, "My mission in life is to fuck Bridgette."

I wonder if he's succeeded in his mission 🤔

The Book of Bantorra: 8/10 - So (going to sound like a broken record) I had this sitting around but never really got around to seeing it. I think the edgelord cover art maybe was a turn off for me. That being said I ended up enjoying this one more than I thought I would.

First thing's first, this anime is thicc with lore. From the first minute you're given a lot to digest. The idea is there are two warring factions. The good guys: Armed librarians / The bad guys: The Church of Drowning in God's Grace. The armed librarians are basically magicians and they protect the Bantorra library. In this world when you die you're turned into a "book" which is like a stone tablet that has all the memories of your life on it. Those tablets go to Bantorra and the librarians protect them. The Church of etc. are also like magicians but they basically want to bring despair to the world. They collect humans and kind of turn them into mindless zombies called "meats" ( @Greatoneshere ) some meats have bombs in their chest while there are other meats that they teach magic to and such. This aspect kind of reminds me of X-Men a bit in that each character has some unique power. One guy can see two seconds into the future, another who can stop time and the main "acting director" Hamyuts Meseta can fling rocks with a sling 🤷‍♀️ (Ok that one sounds dumb but they are very lethal rocks!)

The show is 27 episodes long but they are kind of divided into 4 episode chunks of mini story arcs that tie into the overall story arc for the show. Overall I thought the story was actually quite good, but it will require your undivided attention because if you thought my synopsis was confusing, that's like mostly explained in the first episode. Imagine if it went on and conspiracies and truths were being uncovered. Honestly I think the story is robust enough to make a good RPG out of, give it like a FF7R type battle system and it would be awesome.

Some nitpicks I would say is that there are a ton of characters and it doesn't help matters that they have funky names, and then have nicknames for those funky names on top of it. Like Hamyuts Meseta, and her nickname is Hammy. Another character's name is Mirepoc, and so on. I think the animation is pretty good, certainly above average. I would say the show's look is maybe kind of centered around the 1950s sort of. Every character looks different but a few wear suits while some kind of look like army commanders. Mirepoc wears army fatigues while Ireia is an old lady that wears a maid outfit. But the main character, Hammy, is just a chick with pants and a button down shirt that's open towards the top so you can see her big boobs. I just thought it was kind of strange (although there is a lore reason for her big boobs). That being said she ends up with some of the most detailed animations. A double edged sword for sure.

But anyway to wrap things up I enjoyed it. The tone of the show is a bit dreary and you'll have to pay attention but if you're in the mood for something semi serious give it a shot.

Misery: 8/10

I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about this movie, but after the first couple of minutes I could figure out what was going to happen. Pretty unnerving mostly thanks to Kathy Bates. I might not ever trust a nurse ever again. Not overly violent but there are some surprisingly gruesome parts. Also, odd this is a Rob Reiner movie, I don't really think of him making these types of movies. :p

I think about the run Rob Reiner had from 86-92 a lot. Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men. That’s 5 fairly iconic movies in 6 years. And then he just kinda stops making anything memorable, other than his role in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Godzilla vs Kong...  As a Godzilla fan I was caught very off guard by how Kong-centric the film is. That being said they did an amazing job of making me care for Kong and his journey.. nice shoutouts to the original Kong vs Zilla and to Lethal Weapon 2 of all things

Great British Menu is back on TV 50000000/10

It’s the best cooking programme ever made and everyone that’s enjoyed the Great British (sigh) Baking Show, would like this.

Also Line of Duty is back and continues to be the best as well.

Where can one find this show? And why the “sigh” in the GBBS title?

Its true name is The Great British Bake Off - Baking Show just sounds wrong. It’s ok BBC in the UK but I couldn’t tell you how to watch it anywhere else in the world.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence: 8/10 - Call me an uncultured bitch but I had no idea this was a movie, I had just thought it was an odd name for a Utada song

Spoiler

But it's a movie, and she incorporated the theme song into her own music (the lyrics on the other hand have nothing to do with the movie :p )

As for the movie, I enjoyed it. Bowie is very good. I was actually surprised (but probably shouldn't have been) that this is actually a Japanese movie (and a Japanese director) but it all makes sense because a foreign director would have each nationality speak their native language. Moral of story, war sucks no matter what side you're on.

The Prestige: 9/10 - What a perfect movie to watch on Easter. Also, coincidentally the second movie with Bowie I've seen this weekend. 🤔 I think the issue raised was, is this movie as good the second time around when you know what happens and I think so. I think now you can focus on how shitty a person Angier is, and it turns out pretty shitty. I think the twist is hinted at a number of times before it's revealed (but again hard to say having already seen it)

One of those movies that I know I need to watch a second time. I admit I didn't really get it until the fine folks here at D1P explained what I missed to me, need to rewatch.

I remember seeing this after a shift at work at the theatre and liking it, but it wasn’t until my 2nd viewing where fell I love with. I think it’s because I took the opening words seriously and watched closely. I should really try and find a 4K disc copy for my collection . . . when I have money and the price is cheap.

Memoirs of a Geisha: 7/10 - I've been wanting to revisit this one for a while for one reason or another. I feel like this is a movie I kind of liked back in the day but now some aspects of it feel a bit more problematic. This is a movie that take place in Japan in the 1930s or at least at some point before WWII broke out. The cast consists of all Asians, but I guess they are considered interchangeable Asians as several of them (Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh (Chinese Malaysian)), including the lead actress Zhang Ziyi, are Chinese! Also, despite taking place in Japan they all speak English, and sometimes they throw in some Japanese for flair. Why even include Japanese if you're going to say kanpai and not translate kanpai? Just to be cool? Even more annoying at the beginning of the movie they speak some Japanese but they didn't even bother to put subtitles for it. I could be persuaded that it's in English because the book was written in English and therefore they didn't want to reverse translate but that's something that works for a book and not a movie.

As for the movie it's pretty straightforward with an odd message. Like the movie is how you can live a happy life after being sold into slavery. Wasn't this girl 8 years old when she fell in love with Ken Watanabe? I mean when all things are said and done she's probably in her 20s but all these guys are old dudes. So the love story is kind of compelling if you can get past the age difference. The best part of the movie, probably the reason it was made, the production design is beautiful. But then again Japan has some beautiful sights so this part would be hard to screw up.

It's just interesting to see this movie after Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence where a Japanese director was able to include Japanese and English, and the English speakers spoke Japanese while Rob Marshall decided to make Japanese and Chinese actors speak English.
