The Florida Project: 6/10 - This one was met with critical acclaim and even landed Willem Dafoe an Oscar nomination but I thought it was merely alright. The movie is presented in an almost semi-documentary / freeform narrative type of style that follows an undisciplined girl and her mother, uh I'm not even sure of the term here, neglectful? Shitty? Whatever. This is the case of, the apple doesn't follow far from the tree, and most of the movie is watching this kid stirring up shit, begging, etc. I feel  like the end tried to be emotional but I think the movie makes it really hard to like the girl and then the ending after the fact is kind of disappointing.

Hobbs & Shaw - 7/10

Honestly, this movie is a delight. It's dumb, but the banter between Statham and Rocky is golden. Throw in a few Ryan Reynolds scenes and I was giggling a lot. It is definitely the most intentionally funny movie of the franchise, and honestly has the best action sequences. The third act kind of drags, but whatever, I was having a good time.

SO, I finally did it. All 9 F&F movies. I have now discovered that Better Luck Tomorrow and The Italian Job are also unofficially part of the universe, so if you REALLY want to watch all of them, you should add those.

Honestly, my brain might be a bit fried, especially considering I watched most of them between the hours of like midnight-4am, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The first two are unintentionally hilarious, and they kind of set up the comic-bookyness of the franchise without doing it on purpose. The 4th movie turns it into the Fast & Furious Cinematic Universe, even if it's a bit of a mess. The 6th and 7th ones officially turn it into a super hero franchise. Tokyo Drift kind of grinds it back to reality (if you watch it in chronological order), then 8 brings it home. Hobbs and Shaw is just a playful spinoff story.

edit: meant to say Tokyo Drift comes after 6, not 7.

I honestly throught I would burn out on it. It's definitely stupid, and they retcon all kinds of shit all the time. Plus they use an amnesia plotline that lasts for 2 whole movies, that's some straight Days of Our Lives bullshit. F9 looks to expand on that even further. But you know what? Comic books do that shit all the time. And Fast & Furious is essentially just a comic book movie franchise that isn't based on a comic book.

Yes but did you watch the two short films? The first, "The Turbo Charged Prelude to 2 Fast 2 Furious" that explains Paul Walker's journey between the first and second movies. The second, "Los Bandoleros" (directed by Vin Diesel) that is a prequel short film to the fourth film Fast & Furious explaining what Dom has been up to and the heist he's planning that opens the fourth film. I bet you didn't see those (both can be found on youtube easily enough)! :p

I didn't, but I had seen both previously, I thought it would be okay to skip them. Shame on me, I guess.

Terminator Salvation - finally watched this after avoiding it for years.  Eh. . .I didn't hate it and it wasn't as bad as I was lead to believe, but it wasn't great.  Probably not something I'd rewatch.

One of those movies you're just going to forget exists until someone says "Christian Bale was alright in the terminator" and you'll go "what, when was Christian Bale in the- oooooh, right."

I will say that I thought this movie was painfully on the money. I spent quite a few years living in Florida and some of it felt incredibly close to some people's lives I knew down there. I don't think some of it really worked as a movie per say but I did find some of it very affecting, especially the ending. I thought it was a good choice also to show the girl being a little shithead for the most part, it's a glimpse into how trashy environments perpetuate trashy behavior and that this girl really never had much a chance and probably will repeat the same cycle like so many people actually do.

I did think it was a bit overhyped and lacking in some areas but I also thought it had legitimate moments of brilliance. Also, it legit felt like Florida in its mood. Magic Mike does too actually.

Maybe it's fascinating to people who never lived that life but I was pretty close to it so it just felt like nothing special to me. 🤷‍♀️

The parts that worked felt 'special' to me because we rarely get to see this in a movie. There was no big redemption, no 'good person' nice characters for the audience to feel good for when they were naturally redeemed. Most movies make us expect a little girl growing up in these circumstances to be portrayed exclusively as a saint in the middle of moral decay and the shining beacon of the movie. I liked that about it, it opted for something else.

But again this is just my take on it, I'm by no means saying you're wrong or whatever. I still think it's flawed as a movie but I think it heavily plays on the viewer's personal experiences more so than a lot of other movies might. At least that was the case for me and some friends that went to see it. We all had wildly different takes.

For All Mankind - season 2

The human Earth based drama that makes up the majority of the first 2/3s of the season is mediocre at best but the space stuff is so good. The last 3 episodes are incredibly intense. Special mentions goes to the use of silence, while 100% realistic it is still incredibly well done.

7/10

Finished Salvation, it was pretty fun but super network-y, like every commercial break ending in a mini cliffhanger. Despite getting cancelled it does have an actual conclusion to the main arcs of the two seasons

Spoiler

It was aliens

Without Remorse - 4/10

I love Tom Clancy. Without Remorse is probably my second or third favorite book of his. I love Michael B. Jordan. But why does this exist?

I understand that creative decisions need to be made to adapt any material from one medium to another. But I'm honestly wondering why they bothered to name this 'Without Remorse' and associate it with Tom Clancy's book. Besides a character with the name John Kelly, it has nothing--and I mean absolutely nothing--in common with the book it's supposed to be based off of. Why buy the rights? Were people itching for a "John Clark/Kelly" movie or show?

Outside of that oddity, the movie itself is pretty standard fare action/political thriller. Corrupt politicians, shadowy intel operatives, sacrifice paid with betrayal, some fun shootouts, etc. It's all there. None of it is terrible, but none of it is particularly memorable either.

Once I saw the trailer, I knew it was gonna be pretty bad sadly.

With Tom Clancy dead they can still use his name as if it means something and trick people into thinking it's good.

Erased: 6/10 - Feels a lot like those spy thrillers you used to see back in the day. Nothing too original and the daughter (Liana Liberato) is not particularly good. The action and overall story feel competent enough. I think something that works in the movie's favor is the setting. It takes place and was filmed in Belgium so it makes for something interesting to look at even if you've seen this type of movie before.

Mortal Kombat - 4/10

Final finished it after like 3 attempts of trying and then falling asleep. I think Kyle Bosman said it best when he described it as a "rated R kids movie." It also just kind of felt like the first episode of a TV show, which is great because it looks like it will definitely be getting a sequel, but it kind of sucks to have a Mortal Kombat movie that doesn't have the actual Mortal Kombat. Some of the fights felt very anticlimactic, like the only fights with any real dramatic tension were Cole's fights. Anyway, it's not terrible, but it's just kinda... ehhhhh.

:hmm:

4/10 is not terrible for me. It's like an airplane movie. 3 and under is bad. My scale goes:

1 - worthy of committing seppuku

2 - A disaster

3 - Horrible, but it's got like some quippy one liners or something that I love. Maybe like "so bad it's good" territory.

4 - Not terrible, but not something I'd ever watch again. Forgettable.

5 - Some good things

6 - Some bad things

7 - Hits all the marks, but we're not there yet. Like you aren't chomping at the bit to watch it again.

8 - Now we're talking

9 - Tell all your friends

10 - one of the greatest of all time

What's the point of a 10 point scale if anything under 5 is considered trash

Touche. But there are levels of good and bad. I enjoy The Fast and the Furious and I enjoy Die Hard, but I would not equate the two. I think Mortal Kombat was like kinda bad, but I would not put it anywhere near as bad as whatever that Mark Wahlberg movie I watched recently was called. That movie personally offended me, Mortal Kombat just made me go "eh." I didn't regret watching it.

The Mitchell's vs the Machines

I hadn't even heard of it until a couple hours before I watched it and it turned out to be probably my favorite movie of the year so far but I am huge Lord and Miller fanboy. A truly great family movie that kids can enjoy along with 40 year olds like me.

9.5/10

Don't worry, Mile 22 offended a lot of people. It's a surprise, since director Peter Berg is quite good and he and Marky Mark were on a roll with Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor, and Patriots Day (all good to great movies). Now after Mile 22 and Spenser Confidential, I think they should go their separate ways.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - 2.5/10

It's fun in parts. Mainly early in the movie. Makeup is bad. You can tell where the budget went as there are some scenes that have laughably bad editing and effects, while others can be really good. Alan Tudyk's character is just dropped and never mentioned again. Honestly, none of the characters really do anything or mean anything other than Lincoln himself.

It's basically like the first 30 minutes of the movie get your dick hard and then the next 60 have you thinking about the fact that you've forgotten to file your taxes and there's that thing you're supposed to go to that you don't want to, and before you know it you're just not in the mood anymore and can we just go to sleep?

Criminally low!

I think it's the second time I've seen that movie, and there are parts of it that really make me want to like it, but it just doesn't amount to anything. It's just, like, blue balls. I can't stress enough how much I really want to like that movie, and the first 20-30 minutes are *chef's kiss,* but it's just a mess, and it's disappointing.

I didn’t like the movie that much myself on my first viewing, but it plays on FX up here in Canada often. If I’m too lazy to switch to Netflix or do something else, I let the movie play and it gets better. Still not a great movie but I started appreciating it for the zaniness that it was, and became an overall enjoyable popcorn rump. Still need to watch my 3D copy on my projector

She Dies Tomorrow

Not sure how to describe this...definitely not easy to box into any genre.  Kind of a horror/satire about the contagion of extreme negativity and the widespread impact it has.  Characters who are well-adjusted end up saying some truly guffaw-inducing stuff later on. Not the most uplifting watch as one might expect, but it has atmosphere in spades and you won't find much else like it. 8/10

Cosmos season 3

About halfway through and digging it, but I really wish they'd bring in more obscure astronomy stuff instead of all the highschool senior class history lessons but I get how that's important as well.  Love the additional animation styles but some live action footage would also be cool to see.  When it does go into what life on other planets might like it gets pretty bonkers and almost reminds you of Wayne Barlowe paintings.  Overall, decent so far, looking forward to the remaining episodes.

The Good Place

Five episodes in.  Light watching, ideal for something to leave on before going to sleep.  I think I might've predicted where the story's going but the back and forth between cast members can be fun when it hits its stride, so looking forward to that.

Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World - 8/10

Such a fucking master class. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's only slightly over 2 hours long, but it FEELS like it's 4 hours long. I can't pinpoint exactly why that is. Every scene matters, it doesn't drag at any point... and yet at the end I feel like I just watched an entire trilogy. So yeah, I'm not sure what to say about that. Still, fucking fantastic movie.
