Okay, serious post time:

This is a massive rebuke to Trump and Trumpism - nothing else. We have historically low unemployment, a flying (albeit recently stalled) stock market, rising wages, very strong GDP growth, and Republicans can make a plausible case that the tax cuts and deregulation have provided to a steady but anemic recovery a sugar high, at least.

And they lost. Big, it appears.  If one looks at previous wipeouts, 2014, 2010, 2006, 1994, we could point to a bevy of economic, war, or policy conditions/positions that voters rejected. Not so here. This is entirely about the GOP failure to provide any constitutional check on this naked emperor.  Point is, any spin tomorrow is complete horseshit.  This race is about the simple fact that the president is reprobate who either rejects or never understood the character of this country.  I want to point out, too, that rejecting a president for his refusal to abide by American democratic norms is an incredibly sophisticated voting analysis. We have ample reason to be very proud of our people tonight.  I mean that earnestly.

Anyway.  Fuck him, fuck Republicans.

Are you a member of the National Guard?

No: You aren't well trained. You aren't a militia. Hence you have no legal right to own a gun.

Yes: Ok, you can own a gun.

Here, I'll compromise--if you aren't a member of the National Guard and still want to own a gun, then you can purchase a powder loaded musket, just like the founding fathers intended.

And proved my point again. Instead of having a rational discussion with the guy you basically attack him.

This is a shit argument.  Do you think the founding fathers wrote the first amendment to protect your right to whack off to double penetration movies on Pornhub?  Do you think the founding fathers had the internet in mind when they wrote about freedom of the press?

All the more reason to disregard their writings and myopia.

Agreed.  I was listening to Hannity on my way home today and he spouted off a 5 minute long list of Trump accomplishments that sound great - but this was a referendum on Trumpism.  He's toxic, despite wins in the economy.

Apart from empirical results, gun ownership as a right could be argued to be closely related to the right of self defense.

There's a lot of important differences between guns and self defense in general, more than enough differences that an appeal to empirical results is necessary to hold the argument.

(Also, an appeal to self defense, and everything else, should ultimately be subject to empirical results, but I don't see much issue with the concept that people have a right to self defense to some degree.)

Who's wages are going up. Mine hasn't. People in retail, fast food and other service industries aren't making more. Janitorial, custodial, and facilities aren't making more. Other than when they succeeded in bargaining when they strike teachers aren't making more. Police aren't making more. Who the fuck is getting higher wages?

It's high time we move past the arbitrary unemployment rate and talk about wages when we talk about the health of our economy.

Wages have stagnated since the early 1980s.

They went up 3% last quarter. Your concerns are legit, but not why rich suburbs are abandoning the GOP.

@Emblazon

Explain how “the people” in the second amendment is just those in the militia but “the people” in the first amendment is not just those in the militia.

The second amendment is dumb, but the text in context isn’t hard to grasp. The first part justifies the right, not modifies.

...and yet some want to hold up wage growth under Trump as something he's done for us. When even if he could be responsible for that he has not done it at all. It simply has not happened.

Interesting hypothetical.

With the Senate well in hand and the midterms behind them Sessions will be gone. The only question is how fast Trump will move on that bitch.

Then well see what Trump can do to throw a wrench in Mueller's investigation.

The funny thing is that we may go from the most laughably partisan hackish investigation(the Nunes led House) to the only valid remaining investigation(the Dem controlled House).

I have heard many out forward doubts that Trump would move on Mueller, especially with a Dem House making any attempt to completely scuttle things impossible. But I think he will do what he can, because if he can make it look like it's a partisan hitjob by the Dem House, he feels like that's a winning move for him.
