It seems like this game does a lot of dumb, needless things.

I played for three hours tonight and I did start to have fun. I got used to using the cover system during gun fights and found a pretty cool double barrel shotgun. Crafted a few items and competed a couple of quests. I mean it’s an okay game but it could have been done wayyyy better. The controls are almost a deal breaker. And the button assignments for map and weapon wheel are horrible.

I can’t tell what standard people are judging stuff by anymore, or if they’ve ever played a R* game.

I have no major issues with the R* games since SA/Bully thru GTA5. Sure, I hated the the plot of 5 and Trevor, but the gameplay was fine. This has issues all across the board. This game doesn't even have a story at all so far. Just Missions with character you are supposed to care about, or maybe loathe, but outside of John, Dutch, and Arthur I really don't care about the other characters and the game has given me no reason to. I mean, sure Art has known them for a long time and knows what they are like, but the player doesn't. It feels like there was another prequel RDR and I somehow missed it. Like, if there is an RDR3 I won't be surprised if Dutch is the MC and takes place before RDR2 and it ends after the Blackwater shit.

One of the things the other R* games had going for it was the style. Took place in the real world but everything was over-the-top silly shit from certain plot points, to characters, to gameplay. Like how in RDR you could Deadeye birds with dynamite. I mean, maybe you still can, but that just shows how ridiculous these games can get. The games also didn't seem to punish you much if you just wanted to go crazy, but it feels like this game is punishing in that regard.

Controls are mindbogglingly convoluted and sluggish, what happened here? I spent some hours with it tonight at my friend's house having some drinks and smoking and it's like a new gold standard of style over substance.

It looks so fucking gorgeous and exciting that we were constantly low-key making excuses for how shitty it plays at the same time. It's like the game actively tries to mess with you at every turn with illogical button mapping, endless tedious 'realistic' nonsense and general game feel weirdness. R* it's not a Hollywood blockbuster, it's a video game, interacting with it shouldn't make me want to wish for a 'roam around only' option to look at night skies.

It's been a while since a game felt so at odds with what I had expected, and in a bad way at that. It's stunningly gorgeous and cinematic and all that but the gameplay felt aggressively not fun to me. Realism does not have to equal a chore.

I know I didnt't even buy the game myself and don't want to crap on anyone's hype, but I'm truly baffled by how bad this played, seriously.

There's a difference between bad controls and not learning how use the controls. Also, the controls are pretty customizable as is everything else in the game. I tweaked my settings a bit and now the games pretty much the way I want to play it. There's a lot to learn in the first couple of hours and some missions are there to specifically teach you how to use a particular weapon or item or gameplay element. Like hunting or crafting or using the lasso. I may be going crazy, but this game literally plays like a more refined version of the first game with more stuff to do and everyone loved that. I suggest people take the time to learn the controls because there's a lot to like here. Or I could just be losing touch with today's gamer

You have to talk to the other characters to get their back story. Once you're in camp, you walk around talking to them and some will give you missions.  Those missions will often have to paring up with that character and getting some back story.  The characters in this game are so rich from what I've seen that I already am looking forward to getting to know them. The game only holds your hand for that first chapter and then that's it. After that you have to navigate your way through the narrative.

I have talked to every single one and they offered nothing. I have NO fucking desire to constantly talk to every member at hoping to get a mission. The only mission I have gotten from talking was when I was walking but and some chick said that John wants to talk and then a mission popped up.

This is so wrong. There are many things you can't do in chapter 2 until you unlock the mission for it. Like you can't even get a new main horse until you do mission with Hosea.

Fucking garbage. I never want anyone to unironically use that sentence. When learning about your "friends" in a game is more fucked than a Final Fantasy game you fucked up. And if RPG's there are clear moments when it is time to gain knowledge on your party members, and it is much easier to get it out of them as you don't have to navigate a camp where you move slower than a snail. Like in a BioWare game, if you want to learn about character, you fucking walk up and ask what you want to know.

I don't mean to say that you should't like them or whatever. If ya do then that is great. The game hasn't given me reason to care. If anything, I care less knowing RDR exists. And the game as a whole isn't terrible, but this isn't the RDR I wanted. I wanted RDR but with a new story and characters. Like, when the game was first shown I wasn't happy that it was a prequel. I like it when games move on from one set of characters to a new set. Don't need to explore the lives of dead men.

And no. The controls are bad. Hitching a horse is bad. Trying to get a prompt to appear when you are "RIGHT FUCKIN THERE" fucking sucks. This isn't Dark Soul's in terms of movement. And the controls I want to change are one that you can't change. Also, I never thought DS had bad controls. I think this does. It is janky as fuck. Like, oh? My horse is near a ledge? Why yes, of course I want you to jump on up it! Or, "horsey! There is a fence, jump over it!" And then the fucker doesn't jump. Or the horse that has so much fucking auto pilot yet will gladly let you run it into a tree.

My poor horse has so many concussions from hitting trees.  I think this is a really good game but early on in development someone decided the janky gameplay from the first had reached perfection and they just needed to provide more world around it.

Feeding your horse is a perfect example of how dumb this game can be. Hold L1, hit R1 twice to bring up the "horse menu", use the right stick to aim at the food, hit L2 or R2 to cycle to food you want (while still holding L1 and the right stick), let go of L1, THEN let go of the right stick.

It's something I've only had to do maybe once every hour or two, but each time it feels massively stupid. Infomercial voice: "There's gotta be a better way!"

Really? The game is building an obvious plot from the start, imo. I have not followed this game at all because I don’t want it spoiled, but the plot itself is almost too obvious if you ask me lol. They’re definitely taking the slow burn route but like everything Dutch says points to where it’s going, and I think it’s pretty compelling.

As far as the style stuff, it’s there. If that’s what you’re looking for, trust me it’s there lol.

I agree... the plot is pretty obvious where the main story is going, at least a major arc of it. Even subplots are starting to take shape and I am really starting to like the variously members if the gang. Plays like a Rockstar game to me with more customization options

@skillzdadirecta I was really disappointed with the beginning which is why I think I disliked the game so much at the start. I was expecting some type of huge wow whoa guns blazing fist fighting opening and when it starts so slow I was like WAT? After playing further the game does have some quality to it. That’s not to say that there isn’t a lot wrong with it too though. I think when it’s all said and done it’ll be a solid 8/10 for me.

Fair enough... I didnt like some of the default controls either so I tweaked them and now the game plays better for me. As far the narrative,  I played through that entire first chapter in one sitting and it built to a nice climax

Spoiler

With the train robbery

I don't know how I'm gonna feel about the game by the time I finish it... i may get bored with it,  put it down and not finish it until years later (like I did with the original)

But so far, I like it and really want to explore the world and characters.  I'm not gonna debate folks on the quality of the game, I only suggest folks take the time to learn how to actually play it before they make judgements or conclusions. I've seen several things said, about the gameplay in here that don't seem right to me based on what I've played but like I said, I'm not gonna argue... I saw this coming. It's happened with every major release this fall.

I usually hold L1 to look at the horse and a list of options come up, feed is one of them... its X on the Xbox controller. I press X and he feeds the horse whatever he can eat that's in the inventory... usually oat cakes which us the default I think. I never went into the menu to feed the horse.

You have to do what he listed if you wanna feed your horse while you’re on it or pick a specific food so you can focus on stamina or health.

I've tried feeding my horse while standing next to it, but each time that option was grayed out. No idea why (and trying to use a grayed out option is a perfect time for a tooltip to pop up, but not here). And it's usually when I'm riding that I realize he needs fed.

This game kinda feels like if the Harlem Globetrotters never really learned how to dribble. The big flashy stuff is impressive, but you can't forget your fundamentals.

@skillzdadirecta can you share some of the tweaks you made? Basically anything to help everything feel not as stiff.

I didn't change much but you can tweak a lot. I changed the run button from hold to toggle, reduced the aim assist a bit and increased the look sensitivity until it felt right. It also has separate settings for third person and first person. I don't know how you feel about the lock on targeting but you can turn that off entirely. You can also set it so you don't have to button tap and can turn those functions into holding the button (Sprinting and other actions). The controls (like GTA V) are very customizable and if folks take the time they can pretty much get the game to play and feel the way they want it to. The default controls do need tweaking in my opinion though.
