Is Resident Evil 2 Remake worth a playthrough?

After just beating Dead Space remake I'm in a horror mood atm. I haven't played RE2 since the original PlayStation so it would literally be a new experience for me.

Did the remake improve controls and gun play at all? Any visual options for the PS5? I love Resident Evil but part 8 was not the greatest in the series by a long shot.

Does it hold up to today's standards?

RE2R?  Absolutely!

RE3R?  Not so much.

I liked RE3R.

Yes you should play them but I do want to advise this isn't a REmake situation. I still consider the PS1 ones worth playing due to the differences.

It's one of the best games of the last ten years or so.  In my opinion the game is much stronger than RE 7 and RE 8.  The RE engine is excellent and the visuals were recently enhanced for the newer consoles.  The game is short (around 5-7 hours) and is designed to be highly replayable.

It's my favorite Resi game released since RE4. RE7 and RE8 don't come close, they both just feel like pastiches of better games to me while RE2R feels like it had actual creative drive behind it.

I think I beat RE2R eight or nine times. It's a ton of fun and very replayable.

Also agree with this, I don't think the remakes replace either RE2 or RE3. Maybe it's because I grew up with them but I replayed both not that long ago and both still ruled, archaic controls or not.

RE2R is a great game. RE3R is a fun and more action oriented game but still very much worth playing with some really fun/crazy scenarios but yes, it's not as good as RE2R, just like RE3 was not as good as RE2 originally back in the day. I feel like people forget RE3 started off as a spin-off game to RE before becoming a mainline title and it always played/came off like one. RE3R is limited by RE3 to some degree, it does what it can to make it a pretty fun (and short) game. The RE engine is still buttery smooth to play and looks and sounds great.

The archaic controls are why I can't play the OG Resi games. People have been complaining about Goldeneye's controls, but OG Resident Evil's controls are about as useful as shoving peppercorns up your asshole. Played maybe an hour of REmake on GCN, plus some of OG RE2 way back in the day, and noped real quickly.

Now the REmake games, plus RE2, and 3 though have piqued my interest for awhile now, and with Revelations 1 & 2 on top of that, that could compliment my PC library quite nicely.

I played the entire series 15 or so years ago and got through it just fine. Loved the games. Then I got the REmake on PC when that released and tried tro play with tank controls and noped out pretty quick. Thankfully that version gives the option for standard controls, so I played it like that and it's still one of my favorite games of all time.

The remakes are great. RE2 was amazing and I really enjoyed RE3, though it's not as good. But as said above, people forget it started out as a spinoff and the length of the game reflects that.

I dunno about this one. Maybe?

I only played RE2 very briefly when it hit on the PS1, but got interested last month and set up a very nice version of RE2 on PC with a few QoL changes to make it play properly and feel good on a modern controller.

Honestly... I barely remember anything about it, and this was just last month. Granted I only played Leon's campaign, but it felt so lifeless and dull compared to the remake, and even compared to RE1. Original RE1's mansion to me was the basically the soul of the game, I still feel like the minor city bits and police station (as ornate as it was) just wasn't anywhere near as interesting as the mansion. The mansion in RE1 was this weird dichotomy where it seemed like an incredibly comfortable and luxurious place that I'd love to visit in real life, next to a bunch of horrifying monstrosities. I think RE2, even the remake, felt a bit more generic and less interesting in that regard. But RE2R is definitely one of my favorite games ever.

I'll play through Claire's half and experience the amazing ZAPPING SYSTEM™ a bunch of fedoras were upset didn't make it to RE2R probably sometime this month.

Then I'll hit up RE3, and I think after that maybe Dino Crisis or Parasite Eve, a bunch of beloved games I never got a chance to really play through.

I'm still curious if after RE4R they do RE0, RE: Code Veronica or redo RE1. I don't think they go to RE5. Since they did RE7 and RE8 concurrently with the RE2R and RE3R (and now RE4R) remakes, I imagine they are making RE9 and whatever the next remake will be at the same time. I do think RE1 needs to be redone again since it's been since 2002, and I think both RE0 and RE: Code Veronica are primed to become better with remakes. Hopefully they ultimately do all three games. I think they may never bother with remaking RE5 or RE6 given they are much newer/more recent and are the least popular entries in the franchise (though I did enjoy the co-op of RE5).

RE2 on N64 has a non tank control option. Have you tried it?

I wasn't a fan of the RE2make. I didn't expect my inability to replay most games to strike when RE2make really wants you to play it 4 times. Well, I played it 1.5 times and I got bored. I got like 6-8 hours of mediocre gameplay (me want shoot good but game say no shoot good).

Dead Space is the better game IMO. And part of my attitude comes from it being one of the few games I actually bought and just not having all that great of a time. I'm also big into shooting things and having the shooting be fun and explosive.

The problem is RE0, Code Veronica and 6 are bad games. RE5 was the best selling RE game for a while but remaking it would be problematic (Gunning down hordes of Africans in 2023 is not a good look) so I think the only way they can go is re remake 1. They want to make certified hits and after 4, 1 would be the biggest draw and the best game. Then maybe they should look towards other franchises.

For that sole reason, the N64 version was my favourite to play.

Anecdotally, one of my favourite memories growing up was buying RE2 (for the N64) when I was 9 or 10, going to my friends for his birthday party, and we played through both campaigns over a Friday/Saturday morning. Then, the rest of our friends came over for his actual birthday and we did it all again.

Well I'm going to hard disagree on RE0 - I found that to be a unique game that explored some interesting side aspects of the original RE story that I think could be radically improved with a remake. Same with Code Veronica, where its romance story in particular could use updating. Again, remakes would really improve these games in that excellent RE engine. I agree RE6 was a bad game though. It will be interesting to see which remake is announced next once RE4R comes out.

Well I have this downloaded and ready to play after work today. I'll only get to play tonight and tomorrow then my full attention will go towards Harry Potter. Maybe I'll mix it in since it isn't too long. I appreciate all the responses in the thread. Seems like a kick ass game.

I find the stories better personally. The 2nd runs with actual effort put into them is nice. Claire A to Leon B is the best story in RE2 based on my previous experiences. I need to get back to playing this actually. I beat Claire A with the mod I assume you used though mine was via the NGC version.

Also for people that don't like the tank controls. The HD versions of Zero and REmake have normal controls available. I don't like it because what is forward will change based on the camera angle. Probably just need more time to get used to it. Btw RE0 and REmake are hard actually they all are to a certain extent. Could just be just being rusty from old school survival horror games. Still there are mods for RE2 and RE3 to make em look better and it's not like the games are on sale so knock yourself out.

Capcom should just buy the mods out and sell them tbh. REmake does what RE1 does but expands on it so beyond wanting to see what it was like during it's initial release there isn't much of a reason to play RE1. That's not the case with RE2/RE3. I expect RE4 to be great but the OG one is like one of the greatest games ever made. It's the only SP game i feel comfortable replaying.
