Lol. Does that matter at this point? I mean sure, in 1997 this game was pretty damn amazing. You compare it to today's standards it's just not a good videogame in any way.

I have massive nostalgia for the game but I find most of the mission based gameplay is fun - escort/protection missions withstanding. It does remind me I’m also one mission off finishing Perfect Dark on the N64.

I backed away from this thread but anyone that will find enjoyment out of this I'm happy for them. It's just a big turnoff for me.

Nintendo hasn’t added modern FPS controls to the new release of Rare’s classic

Sad trombone noise. (for the switch version)

Sooo... I played like 10 minutes of the Xbox version and while yes, it is dual stick and has a more modern button/stick layout... the movement and aiming feels VERY old and busted. They didn't improve the smoothness or use any of the subtle tricks with acceleration and whatnot that would make it feel more like a modern day shooter.  I'm going to try and play though this again, but time may have passed it by. We'll see.

Can be fixed, but you've got to set up a game specific profile for it.

Yeah this is rough. Hard to believe this was how FPS started for most of us who are old enough. Good thing the levels are mostly short. This might be a play a level here and there kinda thing and not something to plow through which me and my friends did 25 or whatever years ago. If you can’t get it for free on Games Pass or Rare replay I probably wouldn’t recommend it unless you have the warm fuzzy memories of playing it when you were young.

I mean, you have other options on pc :P

It’s definitely something that is more of a struggle to play than it is fun to play in its original form nowadays. I can still see the traces of brilliance and why it was so successful at the time, the guns still feel punchy, the silent pistol has that great zip to it and clearing out a room with it still has a satisfying feel. The tone is good and the mission structure is still kind of unique. But actually executing actions in it is more work than it’s worth and following objectives isn’t as easy to follow as it could be. Game also just looks dumb but that has some nostalgic charm I guess.

I think there is something to it still, that a proper remake could be fun, but as is it’s more interesting form a history perspective than a having fun playing a game in 2023 perspective.

I figured, which is why I want to try it out on something I already have (Game Pass) instead of something I'd have to first pay for (the higher tier of Switch online). :p

I’d literally just download the rom and a copy of retroarch :P

Naw I feel him. If you like it you got to buy it. Wasn't there a remake rumor? If this does crazy numbers then it might make sense trying to get the remake done.

Nostalgia is absolutely the main draw of this game at this point, nobody is expecting it to hold up to modern sensibilities.  But it still does have its charms, and I would argue that local multiplayer (which is sadly so Rare nowadays) is where this would shine.

People have to understand that this was revolutionary for consoles.  FPS games were of course already pretty advanced on PC at this point, but for a certain generation of people this was like a cultural atom bomb.  I wouldn't put it on par with going from 16/32 bit consoles to Mario 64, but it's in that same general league, representing a huge leap forward that wouldn't be surpassed until Halo again revolutionized (and seemingly perfected) the console FPS.  Perfect Dark is the better game (and it has a better remake that's playable in enhanced fashion on Xbox), but this is an important piece of gaming history, and the fact that any of it holds up at all is a testament to what they accomplished the first go around.

The multiplayer has held up much worse than the single player, IMO.  It doesn't offer much beyond a couch deathmatch experience with lots of stop-to-aim shooting.  It's fun for nostalgia's sake, but probably not worth revisiting if you're not of that era.  Halo 1's couch multiplayer has aged a lot more gracefully.

The campaign is still intelligently designed by today's standards, and threads the needle perfectly between stealth and action, linear and open.  That's where I see its relevance today.  Or rather, a sign of what could have been if more FPSs took the right lessons from it.

It’s crazy the rapidity of progression back then. Halo and goldeneye are 4 years apart, but halo is a clear generational leap in multiple respects.

Now 4 years go by and it’s like I dunno we have a Lebron James skin now?

Well on a tech front, 4 years ago the RTX series launched and we began implementing small bits of ray tracing that some people with the top of the line card can start experiencing and now we are implementing moderately larger bits of ray tracing that some people with the top of the line card can start experiencing!

Played it some myself today on XBOX. I agree with the general sentiment, lots of nostalgic charm. Would probably play through the whole thing if there weren't other games I'm wanting to get to in my limited gaming time. I love the graphics, but I've always loved the aesthetic of the kind of HD graphics of 3D models you're used to viewing on a fuzzy CRT tv, even when it makes them objectively worse. Not sure why, just like it.

That said, surprised how well it's held up over the years. I expected it to still be good, and I obviously wouldn't buy this if it was a new game being sold at $60, but even without the nostalgic charm there's a lot of fun sill in the game in 2023.

Last Thursday, played several rounds of Online with some buddies, and overall we had a blast down this trip on memory lane. Sure, the frame rate doesn't hold, but it's still FAR better than what the N64 could do. I can definitely tell that aiming with either the Joy-Cons, or Pro Controller isn't the greatest due to how short the sticks are. The taller N64 stick makes it easier to fine tune your aiming, even with the Dual Analog modified controls on Switch.

I also finished the main campaign on Agent, and now going through each level on Secret, and 00 Agent difficulties, and what strikes me the game overall does still hold up. Sure, the AI can be a bit dimwitted, especially when you have 3-5 enemies right beside each other shooting at you, but the additional objectives, and the rather surprising spike in difficulty, on top of the unlockable cheats, it's great. It's too bad most new FPS titles do not include more objectives at higher difficulties, and unlockable cheats, though I guess that's become more of a Retro-style of gaming.

Overall, all Goldeneye needed was a better frame rate, and controls. Otherwise, the core game was already solid.
