Thought the same, but, thinking the same makes me want this less lol

Do remakes for the games that can truely benefit from them.

Original Half Life, Deus Ex, Zelda OOT completely overhauled would be insane

You're only thinking about the visuals, and even then there's a lot of detail missing from Dead Space that doesn't show quite as well in videos. It still holds up really well, but mainly because of the excellent lighting in an era where no one focused on lighting. All the texturework is pretty barebones, geometry is simple, and there's all kinds of fucked up bugs related to frame rates above 30.

Not to mention how it controls, it's very weighty, but not always in a good way, you finish Dead Space and and go "damn, that was good," but then you open up Dead Space 2 and move Isaac and you're like "holy shit this is so much better."

Plus the multiple lame turret sections which aren't horrible but are boring, the many many zero-G sections including the zero-G basketball minigame that are going to benefit from DS2's zero-G upgrades, maybe rebalance the weapons so that the pulse rifle doesn't just shit all over every other weapon (trust me, you might use it and think it sucks at first, but it does the most DPS in the game by a country mile and kind of breaks it, quite literally at frame rates above 30 thanks to alt-firing into a wall launching you at light speed) and all kinds of other stuff.

And I think if they open it up a bit (it'd never be an "open world" it's still a corridor ship) that could make for some very interesting exploration possibilities.

I think there's a ton of potential!

I've said it before, but they need to remake REmake. Give it the overhaul the current remakes for 2, 3, and soon 4 got.

I just replayed it two months ago and I can safely say that this man smokes rock.

That game is as close to perfect of a game as I've played in years, that's crazy. I love Remake 2, I think it's a really great game, but the art direction alone doesn't hold a dim-ass candle to RE1R. Just compare the lab sections. Granted, that's personal taste because to me RE1 is a lot more Gothic Horror than even RE2 and I vastly prefer that look.

Dead Space is largely a purist's remake, but its smart changes could potentially make it even better than the original.

Quote

A few days ahead of visiting EA Motive for our Dead Space-focused IGN First, I played the original game for the first time since 2008. I only intended to play the first hour or so, but seven hours later I found myself still battling through the rusted corpse of the USG Ishimura. I always knew Dead Space was a modern classic, but I was surprised just how well it stood up all these years later. And so I headed to meet the developers with a slightly cynical mindset: what was the point of remaking something that remains so brilliant?

After playing the same seven hours of the remake, I think I may have been convinced. In many ways Dead Space is a purist’s remake; I’d estimate that around 85% of what I experienced was identical to the original game, just with vastly superior visuals. But it’s the other 15% that has me quietly wondering… could this remake genuinely be better than its progenitor?

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to Dead Space Remake (PS5/Xbox Series/PC - 27 January 2023) update: final preview article and video (IGN)

I mentioned in the Negative World Discord, but I wonder if they remake the other two, or if this is successful go straight to making Dead Space 4. If they do remake the other two, I wonder if they take more liberties in changing things up, at least with 3. If this is a 90% faithful remaster of the first game, maybe a remake of 3 could be a reimagining that fixes some of the issues people had, while keeping the same ideas and themes, similar to the Resident Evil 2 Remake.

If this is successful, I'm guessing the next game will be a reboot of the series as there really is nowhere to go from the end of the third game.

Big in 2023: The long-awaited Dead Space remake is almost here to scare your socks off all over again

Quote

That spine-chilling sentiment appears to be shared behind the scenes too. So much so that the Dead Space remake's technical director, David Robillard, admits he isn't as comfortable playing the game after dark as he is during daylight hours. "When I'm playing it at night, I can't play it with headphones. It's just too fucking scary," Robillard tells PLAY magazine's issue #22. "Just the amount of realism and, again, atmosphere. Not just visually, right? In the way we handle sound, ambience, effects, having systems that will try to spook you. These things, you know, could have been done [on PS4], but not to the level we're doing them today. And they really add a lot to this sort of genre and make the whole kind of experience come together even more."

How so? The DLC to Dead Space 3 ends on an enormous cliffhanger, I would kill for a Dead Space 4.

Was the third one rhe co-op one? I played it from Isaac's point of view but not from the other guy's.

The third is indeed the co-op one that people whined had microtransactions even though the entire game could be played without using the microtransactions just fine. I played the game co-op with my brother who is also a Dead Space fan and we really enjoyed it. There's not much you need to change with Dead Space 3 except cut out the co-op and microtransactions since that's really what people had a problem with.

I mean, for those who actually played Dead Space 3, what was the problem outside of those two things? Levels were great, solid scares, good evolution of Dead Space 2, takes the story in interesting directions, etc. I think people malign the idea of Dead Space 3 more than what the actual game was. This wasn't a Resident Evil 5 situation where the co-op diminished things and became too action heavy. Dead Space 3 is a survival game even with co-op, its stark levels, just the two of you, never any populated places, it's still a very isolating game.

No one said it was going to scare you. People who like to be scared by games or are predisposed to be scared of them will be, that's part of the fun. It isn't to scare people who don't understand the scary part of scary games.

This is an odd thought. DS1 is a fantastic game already. Unless your just not into games like this that this Remake will also be fantastic. Most anticipated game this year and it's just a few days away, VERY VERY excited!

In many ways, Dead Space is still the game you remember from 2008, but this is the way it was supposed to be played. Despite a few nitpicks, the Dead Space remake improves on the original in every conceivable way. Not only that, it reminds us of the potential the franchise has and makes us look forward to future chapters in the series.

Digital Spy - Ben Rayner - 5 / 5

If you're new to the series, it's an absolute must to experience this wholly unique game, and thankfully there's more than enough excuse for older fans to step foot once more onto the USG Ishimura.

EGM - Mollie L Patterson - 5 / 5

Dead Space is one of the true legends of the survival horror genre, and EA Motive's new remake does the original game full justice while also introducing a variety of fantastic new additions and reworkings. Other than some slight disappointment in its visuals on a technical (but certainly not artistic or atmospheric) level, this is a remake that finds a near-perfect balance between retaining the heart and soul of its predecessor and reanimating its body in some unexpected (but positive) ways.

Gameblog - French - 10 / 10

Dead Space Remake is more than just a remake, it's a whole new game. Motive has done a titanic job to give a second life to one of the masterpieces of the survival horror genre. Not only its graphics are a real slap in the face and its sound design is absolutely fantastic, but he few gameplay adjustments and the work on the level design offer a real added value. Even those who know the original game by heart will be surprised. An incredible dive into horror and a real "new gen" slap in the face. Now we only want one thing, the sequel, and quickly!

This version and reworking of Dead Space fixes all issues with the original, adds new content of substance, and quality of life improvements all-around. I don’t often replay games, but I’m eager to start my run in New Game+ on a harder difficulty already. Knowing that this was remade from the ground-up still manages to trick the brain into thinking this is how it used to look back in 2008, but couldn’t be more wrong. This is one of the best survival horror games ever, and sits in the pantheon of great remakes like Resident Evil 2. I hope Motive continue to be the caretakers of the Dead Space estate, as they possess the blueprint for what a remake should be. Dead Space is a horror classic for a new generation, and it’s better than ever.

Dead Space is the perfect video game remake. Whether you’re an old fan or a new player, you will find a fantastically gruesome good time with this title. But look out, this horror classic might just leave some scars alongside that nostalgia.

Taken as a whole, though, Motive Studio’s Dead Space remake is an unmitigated success that builds upon its predecessor’s story in small yet meaningful ways.

Ultimately, Dead Space is a game that a lot of horror developers can learn from when it comes to creating suspense and a feeling of dread in its players.

And as far as remakes go, Dead Space has me thoroughly pining over a decade-old series. That’s a success, if you ask me.

Motive Studios delivers a remake that isn't just a faithful adaption of Dead Space for the modern age, but a love letter to the entire franchise. New narrative tweaks, the addition of a talking protagonist, and open exploration across the ship add up to a stellar horror experience.

The Dead Space Remake has no flaws for me.  It took one of my favorite franchises and reinvented it perfectly.  It is stunning to look at, and every single change or addition they made works.  This remake is a masterpiece and I hope that this is the rebirth that the Dead Space franchise deserves.

Dead Space Remake isn't simply a remake; it's a whole new experience. It's the perfect example of the horror genre at its finest. EA Motive showed to be capable, and they did a great job, adding to and improving the game without interfering too much with the gameplay or the plot. It's undoubtedly the most refined and improved version of one of the most terrifying games ever created.

Although this might have been (or hoped to have been) the expected outcome by fans, it does bring to light the idea that the horror genre is the ideal candidate for the remake treatment.

It is a new starting point for the saga that should not be missed, but neither should they exploit. Of course Motive Studios, which has on its staff some former members of the Visceral Games that brought us the original in 2008, should continue on this path. Definitely, we can consider it from now, as one of the essentials of this 2023 and the current generation.

Atomix - Alberto Desfassiaux - Spanish - 96 / 100

Motive Studio knock it out of the park. This remake of Dead Space is far superior than the original classic. Great additions, impressive graphics, outstanding audio and more, makes this game a most have.

Geek Culture - Jake Su - 9.6 / 10

Quote

All in all, our expectation of the Dead Space remake being just a marginally updated version of the cult classic was blown out of the water just a few minutes into the journey. Instead, what we found was an astonishing and impressive experience that will set yet another high bar for its contemporaries to follow, a true survival horror adventure chocked full of surprises both obvious and subtle, and a fabled return to pure ecstasy while trepidation coloured every step. Dead Space has never looked or felt better, and a homage has easily surpassed its inspiration and become a flag bearer for the genre. If this is what Motive Studio can do with a remake, then we look forward to losing our minds further for even more Dead Space in the near future.

Capsule Computers - Travis Bruno - 9.5 / 10

This remake of Dead Space sets a new standard when it comes to remakes by offering not only improved graphics but enhanced gameplay and story telling that brings the game to a whole new level.

Motive Studio didn’t just reanimate a well-loved cadaver, but intelligently modernized the horror classic by highlighting and expanding upon what worked and changing what didn’t. This combination means that Dead Space is far scarier and more action-packed than the original while also having a more nuanced narrative that is able to build off what worked in the following games.

DASHGAMER.com - Dan Rizzo - 9.5 / 10

The terrifying auspice of Dead Space’s undying legacy now lives through Motive’s reprisal, and without question raising the bar for many to follow suit. An essential experience for any fan of the survival horror genre, Dead Space is a must play for any and all.

Motive has done a bloody brilliant job with their faithful reimagining of Dead Space, ultimately setting the new standard for future remakes. Everything you remember about the original is here, but better, with visceral combat encounters, intricate puzzles, and an extended narrative. This is not to mention the beautifully terrifying visuals, immaculate atmosphere building, and excellent technical performance that act as cherries on top. It's without a doubt that this is the definitive way to enjoy one of the best survival horror experiences of all time.

Multiplayer First - Alex Co - 9.5 / 10

Simply put: It doesn’t matter if you’ve played and finished the original Dead Space or not, Motive Studio’s remake is a perfect reimagining of the franchise. This is how remakes should be, and I’m very glad Motive nailed it out of the park. Hopefully, this means that we’ll see a Dead Space 2 remake (which is the best one in the trilogy in my opinion) announced soon.

Rejoice, franchise fans! Motive has resurrected the franchise and with style! Dead Space 2023 is a fantastic way to start the year for horror fans, and is one indoctrination worth experiencing.

Dead Space Remake preserves and improves the sensations of the 2008 installment and brings back to the front one of the best survival-horror of the last 20 years. Dead Space (2023) is a worthy remake that leaves EA's classic sci-fi horror adventure almost untouched and adds a number of upgrades for space-exterminator Isaac Clarke, his harrowing tale and the menacing undead that keep fingers on triggers at all times.

ComicBook.com - Tanner Dedmon - 4.5 / 5

Quote

For likely many others and I, the only hopes for this Dead Space remake were to be able to play through the game once more (hopefully with a jump scare or two) in a way that didn't feel ancient and clunky. The Dead Space remake far outstrips those minimal expectations, and though it may be premature a cliché to say it's raised the bar for remakes, it's certainly established a dominant foothold in 2023 and in the upcoming string of horror remakes fans have to look forward to. It's again not perfect, but it strives to be better than the original, and that's something other remakes should look to copy.

Digital Chumps - Alex Tudor - 9 / 10

Dead Space is a remarkable game, and surely one of the bigger surprises that will come out of 2023. EA Motive has done a great job in remaking one of the best horror games from the mid-to-late 2000s era; going as far as making certain segments feel wholly new again. As a player who never played the original, this remake feels like the definitive introduction to the franchise. I'm clamoring for more of Isaac's story, and even perhaps beyond.

Dead Space rigorously reanimates gaming's best sci-fi horror game. It's clear EA Motive looked at the original title both through the lens of adoring fans as well as talented developers. They keep what worked, morph what didn't, and unlike the game's protagonist, cut off almost nothing. The USG Ishimura has never been more immersive. Only minor missteps keep it from perfection, but not from being an absolutely stunning makeover, and a must-play experience.

One of the best survival horror games gets one of the best remakes we've seen so far, that is what you need to know about the new version of Dead Space. If you're a fan of the original game or just of the genre, it's a need to play.

Gadgets 360 - Rahul Chettiyar - 9 / 10

With Dead Space, EA Motive has succeeded in mimicking the horrors of the original from 14 years ago, spicing things up with stellar detailing, satisfying gunplay, and tension-building that never strays from the original. Fresh narrative choices give Isaac Clarke some needed character depth, whilst creating opportunities for rewarding exploration through new side quests. This is a remake done right, playing to modern tropes without shying away from depicting gore and using crude language — something that will appeal to both veterans and newcomers to the franchise.

Game Informer - Marcus Stewart - 9 / 10

Dead Space is an accomplished remake that not only brings new life to a classic, but hopefully paves the path for more entries in the series in the future. While much of the game will be familiar to those who have played the original, the meaningful updates and additions go a long way to keep the experience feeling fresh, modern and unpredictable. So, whether you’re already a Dead Space fan or new to the series, this is well worth your time and money – as long as you have the nerves for it. EA Motive could have taken a path of least resistance in delivering a Dead Space remake, though I'm thankful for everything they've poured into what is a tremendous reimagining of one of gaming's truly iconic horror games. It's gorier than ever, the story is made whole, encompassing lore elements once merely pieced together by its fan base, and feels like a genuinely fresh twist on the original.

Dead Space Remake is a clear labor of love from EA Motive toward the influential original. Not only does it understand exactly what didn’t need fixing, but added to the experience through a series of risks that seriously paid off.

Not only is the 2023 Dead Space remake good, it takes everything that made the 2008 game good and makes it better, even outright swapping out certain weak points of the original to make a top-to-bottom must play for anyone looking for a good scare in their games.

Even though it's 10 years late, Dead Space (2023) is Electronic Arts' apology letter after the mayhem of Dead Space 3. With the release of this remake, it has been demonstrated that good development and listening to what the public wants is essential in providing a breath of fresh air to an old game.

The mix of creatures is as deadly and menacing as ever and there are multiple skill levels including a story mode where players can experience the game without the frequent deaths the game is famous for. There are already rumors that Dead Space 2 is next in line for an upgrade and while I would welcome this, I would love to see a fourth chapter in the main series as it would be nice to have a new release every few years to carry the franchise forward.

Dead Space manages to completely capture what made the original game so good while updating it for the times. As Isaac Clarke exploring the Ishimura is as terrifying as ever with Necromorphs popping out of the wall, but with enhanced visuals and audio are elevated to a new level. The added depth to Isaac's character are a welcomed addition, though his reaction to certain conversations does leave a bit to be desired.

Dead Space is a shining example of how to do a remake – and do it well. The tiny changes to the core gameplay are all beneficial to the overall experience, while the aesthetic is absolutely stunning all round. It’s testament to how good the original is that even now, 14 years later, Dead Space holds up as one of the best survival horror games on the market. If you haven’t played it before, or fancy reliving a classic, you should absolutely give this a play.

EA Motive have done incredible work with the Dead Space remake to bring a horror classic up to date, injecting true horror back into the genre alongside considered changes and expansions to the original story. It's hands down one of the best remakes ever made, and it's like playing Dead Space for the first time all over again. Welcome back, Isaac.

Dead Space is an authentic remake, revised and improved in every way from what we had come to love and appreciate back in 2008. EA Motive has not only lavishly improved the entire technical aspect of the original product, but has further enhanced the entire experience, making the Ishimura a frightening death trap, capable of terrorizing and concealing a story that is still fascinating today.

It's extremely difficult to not gush about Dead Space Remake because it does everything right. As much as I love Resident Evil 2's remake, it's fundamentally a very different game from the original. Dead Space Remake is a loyal and loving remake that captures everything that was good about the original, while fixing almost everything that was bad. It's easily the gold standard for how to remake a beloved game, and it's easily as good as Capcom's efforts. If you were a fan of the original, Dead Space Remake is a must-play, and if you're interested in experiencing it for the first time, the remake is the best option.

Dead Space Remake is damn good fun, with interesting ideas and appreciation of the greater franchise that most remakes lack. This isn’t some studio trying to massively reinvent an IP, but working to fit the best pieces together so it can grow anew. It's a fitting tribute to Visceral's best days - maybe not a perfect rendition, but few cover songs ever are.

Dead Space is a cult classic that is considered one of the greatest horror games in the medium. Some may argue that the game didn’t require a remake, however, Motive Studios are faithful in its approach and improves on the original. Although the visual update makes each step a disquieting nightmare, the enhancements made to the combat and narrative are what make the real difference. While the game carefully follows the path laid by the original, the number of refinements makes this the definitive version.

This new version of Dead Space is one of the few remakes that has managed to slot in that little window of time where it’s not been too soon or too long since the release of the original. It brings with it nostalgia, and almost enough change to make it feel fresh and familiar at the same time. For some this will be good news, for others not so much. For me, having loved every minute of only a single play through back in 2008 I was elated by the fact that I had pretty much forgotten almost all of the details in the game.

For those who already love the franchise and are simply hoping for a spruced-up version of the original game, then the Dead Space remake is an easy recommendation, so long as you’re okay with paying the price (or waiting for a sale).

However, for those who have no pre-existing affection for Isaac and his dismemberment skills, more convincing is likely required. Happily, even with my modern expectations, the Dead Space remake still delivers a fantastic narrative, a wonderfully presented setting, and compelling gameplay that satisfies from the first terrifying moment until the horrific last.

It can’t be overstated just how much a Dead Space remake always seemed like a sure thing, and after my time with it, that perspective hasn’t changed. It’s easily one of the best modern horror games, and the fresh lick of paint to really bring its grimy, snarling interpretation of sci-fi horror into sharp new relief is very welcome, especially when it maintains such faith in the source material.

When the horror classic Dead Space makes a comeback in the form of a remake, the adventure feels both familiar and new. The giant spaceship Ishimura is as delightfully unwelcoming as it used to be, as are the heavy, meaty battles. The only real sour note now comes from the final boss, the Hive Mind, but at the very least, Dead Space is far from the only survival horror game to think bigger is better when it comes to monstrosities, even though it’s spent so many hours proving the opposite. Still, it’s a long, terrifying road before you get there, and by then, Dead Space has already done the devil’s work so many times over, giving us some new nightmares in the cold black of space, and proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that this series should have never died in the first place.

Dead Space is a triumphant remake that draws strength from familiarity instead of allowing its archaic origins to become a vice. This is now the definitive version of Isaac Clarke’s first chapter, one that doesn’t aim to reinvent his character, but to outfit him with a more relatable and nuanced arc that will likely set the stage for other games to come.

VGC - Chris Scullion - 4 / 5

Dead Space is a visually stunning remake that is both faithful to the original, and modernises what it needs to. The remake naturally looks significantly better than the original, but it's the addition of voice acting for Isaac and the more natural dialogue this produces which is the most effective update here. The game isn't without its lulls but the overall experience is just as thrilling as it was 15 years ago.

Wccftech - Nathan Birch - 8 / 10

Quote

The new Dead Space is a mostly-successful revival of a survival horror landmark, offering atmospheric new visuals and a series of precision updates to combat, level layouts, and the game’s scary bits that ought to surprise and excite veteran engineers. That said, there was room for Motive Studio to push ever further, as some game elements still feel a bit dated. Dead Space should satisfy long-suffering fans of the franchise, but compared to the latest, greatest AAA horror competition, it’s no longer a cut above.

We Got This Covered - David Morgan - 4 / 5

2023's Dead Space remake masterfully treads the line between doing too little and too much to revitalize a game that has aged so well. Many of the mechanical changes will go largely unnoticed by the average player, but they do wonders to bring this classic back in line with its contemporaries.

Paste Magazine - Grace Benfell - 6.5 / 10

It's hard to argue with its frantic fighting that also requires exactness and its meticulous, if overbearing, sense of place. However, all of this remake's craft, and some of its mistakes, come out of a solid foundation. It's a pity, then, that it thinks better of some of the original's most beguiling decisions and devotedly recreates its simple failures.

PowerUp! - Leo Stevenson - 6.5 / 10

Quote

In the moment-to-moment gameplay, it literally feels identical, but that's because it is. Anything new in Dead Space doesn't enhance the experience, it detracts from it. So, we're left with a worse version of a game that looks vastly superior.

The Jimquisition - James Stephanie Sterling - 5 / 10

Quote

Everything good about Dead Space 2023’s basic gameplay, combat, and narrative is a result of what Dead Space 2008 built. Most of what this remake adds is either less appealing artistic alterations or side content that generally amounts to unnecessary padding, and quite frankly I’d have been more interested in a remaster than a glitchy new take that’s less enjoyable and costs more. When you add the repulsive context of EA benefiting from a series it once destroyed right down to the developer, you get a game that leaves a sour bloody taste, even if it’s an acceptable mimicry of its predecessor.

Dead Space Remake takes us back to deep space at the hands of Isaac Clarke, who will have to survive various hostile organisms aboard the USG Ishimura spaceship. Dead Space Remake does not disappoint, surpassing the original with a major facelift, both in its spectacular audiovisual section and in the playable one. It has interesting additions that give dynamism to the adventure making it very fun to play, all without losing that special essence that made our hair stand on end 15 years ago. With a return to the origins of the survival horror genre from before, it will not leave indifferent neither those who already played it in its day, nor those who try it for the first time. An essential title for all fans of horror and science fiction that can easily take us 15 hours, yes, we insist, it is not suitable for the faint of heart!

Dead Space is more than just a refurbishment, it's a new game. Motive clearly did their homework and revitalized a series sorely in need of it. As a result, this remake of Dead Space obviously manages to largely supplant the original. It gives you a new life and a phenomenal rejuvenation. In this way, it reaches a new audience of players who are thirsty for titles of this genre and with a quality label, but also gratifys all the unconditional followers and fans of the franchise. It is a game that should not be lost, has to be played and tried down to its smallest detail. An almost perfect remake, as it should be. Whether you’re a fan of the OG or a newcomer, Dead Space is the first great AAA offering of this year. Hopefully it means more great things in the pipeline for the series. They have largely succeeded in breathing new life into the long-dormant IP with such a quality remake. Sure, it’s not a 1:1 remake like most purists wanted but, Dead Space will surely impress newcomers and fans (at least most of them anyway) with excellent audiovisual design, an even brutal combat system, reworked lore and an immersive campaign that’ll last you anywhere from 12 to 14 hoursMaybe we’ll finally get the definitive Dead Space 3 experience at the hands of Motive. 15 years later, we have more compelling protagonists to choose from, and even more interesting space zombies, like those in Dead Space creator Glen Schofield’s The Callisto Protocol, which is also mired by repetitive bosses, but at least looks and sounds incredible. The Dead Space remake accomplishes what it set out to do, it makes an old game compatible for modern consoles. But that’s all it does. 2008’s lightning stays in its bottle.

The Dead Space Remake is a stellar effort from Motive Studio that respects the source material but also makes just enough meaningful changes to gameplay to suit modern audiences and provide a fresh experience. It wasn’t an easy task, considering how the original is held in high regard, but the results cannot be denied, and they have indeed lived up to lofty expectations.

One highlight of the game is its superb audio design, which keeps players on their toes, elevating encounters and maintaining tension levels high all throughout. Paired with chilling visuals and lighting that evoke an atmosphere of dread, the USG Ishimura is even more terrifying than ever before.
