What chapter is everyone on? I just hit chapter 8 and holy fuck is this game extremely nerve racking to play. It's hands down the scariest game I've ever played. I play in a dark basement which helps the mood for sure.

Also, the game is extremely good and so well balanced and paced. 9/10 kinda stuff here.

Holy shit this 4080 just hard locks to 120 FPS like it's nothing. Even cranked up from performance to balanced and it didn't miss a beat. Bet I could push it to quality but it already looks and runs amazing. Hot damn I'm glad I waited! The 3080 ran really well on performance but it couldn't quite lock 120, and definitely not on balanced, this easily blows past it.

Also goddamn it really is huge. Had to find an extra connector for my PSU as it wanted 3 separate (not daisy chained) PCI-E connectors. But I got it and I made sure to connect that itty bitty plug securely so I don't get a fire.

Very excited!

(And at 43C too... damn.)

Niiiice. Yeah the temperatures are insane on the 4000 series. It’s weird having a gpu that needs to wear a hoodie outside.

Just beat the game today. Unlocked 40 achievements. Overall game was great. I might be late to the party but I'm guessing a patch fixed the freezes I was getting the first few days? Al of a sudden they stopped.

I'm not going to do NG+. Towards the end things started to become a little redundant so I'm good leaving off where I am.

Now bring on my RE4

I've been playing this on PS5 on Hard, couldn't resist.

I'm enjoying my time for the most part but feel like the combat system could've used some retooling. There are frequent moments where the game tosses you into cramped rooms with tons of clutter, two or three charging Necros and you may not have stasis left. This would be cool if there were good close quarters options. The melee punch is useless because it doesn't create distance and it takes ages to get out of the animation and actually sprint so it kind of just locks you in place. Most of the areas have many dead end corners so I find myself in situations too often where strafing isn't an option, CQC doesn't realoy exist, there is no doge and Isaac is a lumbering ogre and basically it just means get clobbered and die or just reload your save.

The game also has an issue with dropping random shit on top of you and/or RIGHT behind you due to the director thing. The audio issue is just weird to me too and it definitely is a thing. The game generally is loud and abrasive, not in a negative way, but you'll randomly get enemies who seem to be tip toe-ing up behind your back and just fuck you up. I just walked into a room backtracking and 3 full Necros dropped from the ceiling, almost demolish me and then randomly one of the tentacle babies nails me with acid from behind. Had no idea it was even there.

I also think they overdid it with the pitch black everything approach. There's no counter-balance and the flashlight cone is frustratingly small imo. So far 90% of the game is "walk everywhere with gun up to see any part of the environment".

It probably sounds like I'm down on it but for all that, the game does a lot right and I think the remake changes to the actual Ishimura are all great. I think how gorgeous it looks just kind of makes some of the othee stuff stick out more to me.

About 5 hours in and I'd give it a 7.5/10

Absolutely loving it and I knew I would. I'm gonna logg in another 2-3 hours starting now, I have been taking a break between gaming sessions as I refuse to play this with any daylight outside at all. I close my bedroom door when the wife goes to bed and luckily the wife can't hear itt when it's turned WAY WAY UP in the home theater room!

16 hours in and on the last chapter (12). Since chapter 10 the game has gotten much more difficult but also more thrilling.

It's easily in my top 3 survival horror games I've ever played. It's just so polished and easy to navigate through menus and inventory. I'm absolutely loving this game.

It's extremely tense and scary, too.

I'm off today so I dumped quite a few more hours into it this morning and have to say some of my criticisms regarding the combat can be chalked up to me not engaging with the alt-fire modes enough. I bitched about the lack of and instant stopping power kind of tool due to the lack of CQC if they get in your face...turns out the Pulse Rifle's alt-fire provides exactly that. I've been upgrading a lot as well and the game has really been picking up and forcing me to engage with everything I have at my disposal and I think that part was a me issue.

The more I'm playing, the more my gripes are eroding, that's for sure. I think I'll go for another NG+ run after this to redo the earlier chapters with my better understanding of some of the weapons.

Chapter 6 is a god-tier Horror "level". Oppressive and gnarly as hell. Motive's doubling down on the full-on Alien 1 and The Thing atmosphere is really impressive to me. The score is pure Hitchcockian Alien 1 with those staccato strings and all. I know the OG did that and I can't compare right now how much that was expanded or not but it's 2023 and it's an EA game, I can't imagine how easy it could've been for this remake to go off the rails into modern Horror trope crowd pleasing territory and instead it doubled down this hard on being essentially Sci-Fi Gothic Horror.

There's a hallway in Chapter 6 with those screechy things that have exploding sacks on their arms. The lighting and visual presentation of that location in this remake blew my mind last night, it looks amazing.

Aside from getting a tad too carried away with "everything pitch-black all the time", I think this remake improves the original on every level.

Oliver Mackenzie investigates the Dead Space 2023 remake on PS5, Series X and Series S. Does the latest patch fix the issues that held back image quality?

Quote

As John has covered in detail, Dead Space is on the whole a successful remake effort. However, the game arrived with serious issues, including completely unlocked frame-rates on the console's quality modes (and Series S) in the preview code, resulting in extremely uneven performance, then serious image quality problems with the day one patch applied, with current-gen consoles sporting a raw, aliased presentation. For better and worse, updates have come in hot and fast on this one, requiring not one but two restarts of our coverage - hence the late arrival of this comparison piece.

Now reports online suggest that the game’s visual woes have indeed been addressed. So what’s the current state of the game on current-gen? And do these image-salvaging measures hurt performance?

Need to give a special shoutout to the flamethrower effects. Between that and the Force Gun, some of the craziest, goriest weapons I've seen in a game. If you set Necros on fire, the flames will visibly eat through their layers with a bright orange burn effect until it hits charred bone. Force Gun to Flamethrower is a great combo and absolutely one of the nastiest weapon combinations since Bloodborne. That mechanical chunky click the flamethrower has is really satisfying too.

Force gun was dope. I rarely used the flamethrower but I agree, it had great effects. This game is so fuckin well done and I'm glad you're enjoying it as much as I did.

If you do a second run, dump upgrades into the Flamethrower. Its secondary fire especially, the Fire Wall, is really nasty. It basically creates a barricade of fire where you shoot it and can be used to stunlock a whole horde of enemies or even one-shot those tough guys stuck in the walls. Toss a fire wall straight into them and it just burns them down and you can go hide behind a corner and wait. The main fire mode is super useful in conjunction with other weapons, as most of them are imo.

One of the most devastating combos against a strong mob is Force Gun alt-fire, the gravity pull thing, to bunch them all together, then Flamethrower alt-fire into the mob and watch them get melted down. I managed to down a mob of two bloated fat guys, a Necro and two tentacle babies with one of those.

At the time stamp you can see him showcase the Fire Wall and you can see it stunlocks and burns down enemies. He doesn't really use it efficiently here but if you do this to a mob, they can't do shit.

So fuckin cool. So much strategy for combat and it all works so well. Thanks for the vid. I never tried the fire wall...:|

Alex Battaglia delivers the DF tech analysis of the PC version of the Dead Space remake (2023) - including a comparison vs PS5 and optimised settings.

Quote

Like the PS5 and Xbox versions, Dead Space on PC is a brilliant game with some serious issues that unfortunately overshadow what is otherwise a high-quality remake of the 2008 classic. Here's what you need to know about these issues - plus a comparison of PC versus PS5 and optimised settings that boost performance without sacrificing visuals on a range of PC hardware.

Starting with a look at the game's menus, Dead Space is a well-appointed PC port with clearly described options and a background that shows graphical settings changes live - something every PC port should try to emulate. Weirdly though, the menus animate at 30fps, and sometimes performance is lower than expected after making changes - so a full game restart after changing a setting is recommended.

We'll cover which options are worth changing a little later, but for now let's talk shader compilation. This is handled by a precompilation step the first time you start a game, taking a bit more than a minute on a Core i9 12900K and just under three minutes on the more mainstream-orientated Ryzen 5 3600. This is normally good news, as it should help prevent instances of shader compilation stutter, but the implementation here seems flawed - reinstalling a driver and wiping the shader cache doesn't trigger this precompilation step again if you're on the same driver version, so you can run into massive shader compilation stutters this way.

Moreover, the precompilation step seems incomplete even when it does run, as I experienced what appeared to be shader compilation stutters a few times in my playthroughs on different PCs. This is a relatively rare, but still disappointing - and unfortunately it doesn't end there when it comes with frame-time spikes.

There is also streaming and traversal-related stutter, where the game exhibits frequent, repeatable and unpreventable frame-time spikes, up to 150ms or nine frames on a Core i9 12900K, when the character crosses individual boundaries on the map and new sections load in. The first time you do this in a session, the spike is bigger, but it reoccurs each time you cross the same threshold (33ms or two frames, for the example that caused a 150ms spike initially).

The impact and frequency of these spikes increase on slower PCs, with the Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 2060 Super PC exhibiting repeated frame-time spikes of 100ms (six frames) compared to the 33ms spikes on the 12900K + RTX 3080 build. Unfortunately, there's no way to fix this as a player beyond using a hypothetical future CPU that can just brute-force it, so hopefully it is something that can be fixed in a future patch.

Just finished the game on Hard and immediately played another hour on NG+.

Someone at Capcom needs to play this because having just replayed RE8 before this...lulz.

Like I said before, I was way off at first because I wasn't utilizing the weapons and environment to their full extent. Game is 9/10 easy. Maybe 9.5. Definitely in my Top 10 Action games. Horror/Action whatever.

Also contrary to every Resi title shitting the bed later on, this game just keeps getting better as it goes and the boss fights are actually well-designed unlike the clunky shit in every RE game in recent memory.

Also in the Resident Evil remakes, those bosses were not meant to be played on the hardest difficulty. They're broken. (I think this was the case for 3, or maybe 2. I don't remember which one)

I mean I really like RE2R but for example that shipping container boss fight is just bad. You're really fighting your sluggish movement rather than an interesting encounter. I just never find the New RE bosses difficult because of some challenging mechanic, it's always because they feel annoying as shit fighting with that aiming and movement.

I played RE3R once and it was on Hard I think (whatever was the hardest available) and that last boss was so stupid, I almost dropped a, what, 5 hour game?

RE8 just suffered from the same imo. They were cumbersome and obnoxious, not tense. In direct comparison, that game in general feels wimpy compared to this.

Now let's go Capcom and put them in their place with RE4R. I've got high hopes!

I finally beat this on hard, getting all the logs, etc. that I could. Loved the game - reminded me of why I enjoyed the original trilogy so much. I have almost all the achievements, debating whether to continue a new game plus - I'm already on chapter 2 because there are some logs you can only get a second time around, so we'll see. One log I did pick up already hints at Dead Space 2 and EA Motive has hinted they may do it. Would be great to get a Dead Space 2 remake and maybe a Dead Space: Extraction remaster would be nice too. Really satisfied with this mid-remake (Crisis Core has been a great mid-remake too).

I'm already 4 hours deep into NG+. It's cathartic to rip Necros a new butthole with maxed out guns and suit now. It's just such a good game on every front, it's hard to want to play anything else.

Yeah basically this! I have over 80% of the achievements, there isn't much reason for me to do NG+, but I probably will at least get to chapter 6 so I can get all the logs (two logs you can only get on a second run through). I may or may not just watch the alternate secret ending online. I am getting the secret marker fragments in NG+ as I go just in case though. :p

The reason is that the gameplay is insanely addictive for me :joe:
