JJ confirms that Emperor "Sheev" Palpatine is back for Ep IX because hey why not, there is nothing original anymore.

I mean we already knew based on the teaser and poster...but what a load of hot garbage.

From Empire Magazine:

$100 that there is another planet-destroying superweapon, too. Because the obvious answer to Johnson's new direction was "no, MORE nostalgia...MORE!"

Who wants to bet if he is an evil ghost or a physical body? And if he's a physical body, who wants to bet that Abrams doesn't explain how he survived the fucking Death Star exploding.

Ugh this new trilogy ended up being such a waste because JJ wanted to play it so safe. I mean, we didn't even get a single new starfighter design (reskins/tweaks don't count), no world-building in terms of the how the galaxy is now (just another bunch of small towns and wild vistas in the outer rim), etc. Such a waste.

Once it became clear that they were making all this up as they went along I lost a whole of my enthusiasm.

How do you go into a new trilogy for (probably) the most popular media franchise in the history of mankind, with a multi-billion dollar media conglomerate backing you, with a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars... and just make the shit up as you go along? It's unbelievable.

I can understand making adjustments as you go, but they are not doing that. They wrote the first movie with no fucking clue where it was going. They wrote a second movie with no regard for the first or any idea where they are going... and they expect us to be super excited for the stunning conclusion of what is basically JJ Abrahms clumsily freestyle rapping the conclusion of one of the most beloved movie series of all time?

I'm reading the quote, and it's much different than what the thread title is.

There is much more info that has come out from behind the scenes that enters spoiler territory so I won't post it here, but Sheev is back and it makes no sense. But it will be a mystery box. This movie is bananas, based on the leaks. Total bananas. You aren't prepared for the coincidences, twists, and fan service that is about to be thrown in your face.

So basically the thread title would make more sense if I had read the spoilers.

Aight. I guess I'll find out in due time. :p

After the second movie showed me they basically didn't care about an overall trajectory, or continuity in relation to previous films and characters, I gave up any notion of them pulling it off (salvaging it) the third time around.

Don't bother. History will solidify The Last Jedi as a great individual Star Wars movie. Beautifully shot, scored, acted. Going back to JJ was always going to be hard, I've already accepted this will be the Star Trek Into Darkness for Star Wars, sadly.

Second movie is shit. I don't care if the first is a rehash. Don't just take everything that happened in the first movie and throw it down the fucking drain. Killing Luke was fucking dumb. The whole ending of the second movie was actual shit. The casino was fucking shit. Purple hair was a dumb cunt. The Kazekami shit was cool visually, but I hate it because why didn't they just do that all the time? Mary Poppins in space was dumb. Fights were good tho. Actually let me rephrase it. As a sequel, TLJ is shit.

The story deals with the return of the villainous Palpatine, having successfully cheated death by having his spiritual entity "reincarnated" through the essence transfer ritual and cloning technology.

Palpatine wasn't the first Sith that survived the destruction of his body just like how Jedi learned how to survive after death.

I truly don't mind people not liking TLJ, taste is taste.

The notion that the ST is bad, "because it wasn't planned," or any derivative of that drives me figuratively insane because it's so obviously and demonstrably untrue.

Not gonna go look at spoilers but if true that it’s not going to make sense and just be fan service that’s a shame. Rian Johnson really put Star Wars on the right track and Disney got scared because people are mad luke died . I felt like Rian did answer a few questions from TFA and left some things for JJ. Some of y’all just didn’t like the answers. I’m still laughing at people being mad that Luke changed decades after RotJ. It’d be weird if people didn’t change.

I’m gonna be honest every person I’ve talked to who didn’t like TLJ is a republican.... or they call themselves “libertarian”. Might be a coincidence. Might not 👀

😂😂😂 I did notice it had been a couple weeks since D1P debated whether or not Star Wars sucked now because it didn’t follow everyone’s combined head cannon for the new trilogy. LUKE WOULD HAVE NEVER DONE THAT DAMNIT

I'm still trying to grapple with this argument that Luke's behavior in the OT is somehow head cannon, and his behavior in the ST isn't.

Hi, nice to meet you! I'm a card carrying Democrat that hates TLJ.

Rogue One was amazing.

Anyone who doesn't like TLJ for plot reasons but likes Rogue One must have been sleepwalking through that movie.  Remember when the blind samurai and his buddy go along on a suicide mission with total strangers they know nothing about and everyone is just kind of cool with that?  Air tight plotting right there.  Let's not forget that they end the movie in a way where the start of A New Hope makes zero sense at all.

"Yeah, this is a diplomatic mission bruh"

"Bitch I just watched you take off five minutes ago.  I was behind you the whole time."

Rogue One had interesting characters, new locales, mostly a good story. TLJ had bad characters, Porgs and it was a nonsensical low speed spaceship chase.

What interesting characters?  You don't know any of them for long enough for them to develop much of a character at all and throughout the entire movie they're making decisions that are absurd.  They're boilerplate archetypes, a scenery chewing Forest Whitaker, and Madds Mikkelsen hardly waiting for the word "cut" before running to the bank with his paycheck.  If someone cares about plot consistency at all than Rogue One takes a hatchet to the storyline.

Well his behavior in the original trilogy can’t be head cannon because it’s the base for his character. And his behavior in the sequel trilogy isn’t because it actually happened. It’s actual cannon. I’m confused by your confusion haha

Right, neither is head cannon. But critics' assertion that Luke should be recognizable as the character established in the OT is being called "head cannon", when that's not what head cannon is. Consistent internal character logic is a fundamental story writing element.

That's the thing: he was consistent. The argument Mercury is talking about is thinking he's somehow inconsistent because it didn't match what some people had in their heads.

Right, exactly this. The criticism of “Luke wouldn’t have done that” makes no sense. I mean it’s perfectly fine that people don’t like how his arc progressed in the ST. But everything about his character in the ST can be a logical progression of his character in the OT.
