KINGS

As to the list... it's EASILY MGS4. Easily. I think where the story went is blissfully nonsensical and it pulls its nostalgia trigger HARD. But even Naughty Dog, R*, and Ken Levine games have more engaging gameplay and better pacing than MGS4, which is incredibly damning.

You are insane.  MGS4 was awesome.  As is everything I have ever played from Naughty Dog.  (I generally don't understand the hate for R*, but MGS 4 is SIGNFICANTLY more engaging than the bullshit that was Bioshock: Infinite.)

I give @XxEvil AshxX a pass, because he thought he was voting for a different game.

I thought Halo 4 and Mass Effect Andromeda were the most disappointing games in their series.

While I didn't like the last hour of story in Mass Effect 3, I thought it was otherwise a phenomenal game (I played it post patches).

I agree that andromeda and halo 4 are worse than the games I mentioned, but one of those is a spinoff and the other is a new dev and at the time of release reviewers had greater reasons to be skeptical of halo 4 and andromeda than they did of ME3 and reach. I think the reviews of the games I mentioned were highly influenced by hype and even within weeks of release the reception for them had cooled.

Personally I liked Bioshock Infinite the most out of the three (I didn't play 2 actually) but if I were to say one was overrated I'd say it was the first game. The first Bioshock was always a struggle to get though, especially the middle part of the game.

Infinite at least threw in some mobility and stuff to keep things interesting all the way through.

If you consider Andromeda a spinoff, then ME3 is probably the most maligned of the trilogy. Personally, I'd rather play 3 over 1 despite the ending though.

But I still think you're way off on your perception of Reach. I would say that game is nearly universally loved by critics and fans of Halo - though there is a fraction of Halo fans who despise it because they consider it to be a shift toward "COD" with the abilities. Generally though, that game is really well regarded.

I loved Infinite, and though I understand the issues people have with it once some of the social issues were specifically pointed out to me, I'm not going to pretend I caught all that nuance the first time I played it. And I'm guessing most of the people who turned on the game months after the fact didn't either, but suddenly felt the need to distance themselves from it lest they be labeled something undesirable.

I liked 1, but I think the twist is one of the more overrated things in video gaming, and then they artificially inflate the game to the point where it becomes a real slog to play. 2 is actually underrated. It's well paced, but disliked because it's too samey as 1.

MGS4 act 1 was great. The first part of act 2 is great, the back end is bad. Act 3 has almost no gameplay and what's there is bad. Act 4 is a great nostalgia romp. Act 5 is basically no gameplay again other than a rad final boss.

MGS4 is great anime and a middling game. After MGS5 it's probably the only MGS I'll never replay.

Infinite and GTA4 in particular went from these games are incredible to these games are ok but overrated in terms of the general “feel” of the popular opinion. But even like Sunshine was hyped to high heaven at release by most, and then over the years people realized it wasn’t very good.

Backlash on Sunshine came pretty quickly as I recall.  My greatest disappointment about it was its length.  For what's there, I actually think it's pretty solid.  I've re-beaten it 3 or 4 times.  It's a happy summertime game. :sun:

(there's also mods to take it to 60fps on Dolphin now)

I agree -- I don't see how Halo Reach is a "downfall" from the previous games.  I quite liked it.  But then again, I don't understand the reverence for the first three games.

It’s mostly a multiplayer thing and a lot of the time it’s the minority “competitive” crowd.

Reach introduced Sprint, armor abilities, by far the worst rendition of bloom (bloom and spread exist within the original 3 games), loadouts.

Pretty much it added everything the competitive crowd didn’t want. That’s why if you look at the MLG settings for Reach and the AGL’s settings for Halo 4 they strip these settings down as much as possible.

The original 3 games added new mechanics into the game that don’t require fundamental changes to things like map design or not being able to utilize your entire toolkit all times (having to choose between sprint vs engaging in battles). Things like dual wielding and equipment aren’t ruining the basics of Halo like Reach does.

Wait, what were the social issues with Infinite?

A lot of these I haven't played but I would have to go with Metal Gear Solid 4 followed closely by 5... I can at least see the fun in 5 even though as others have said, the game gets repetitive as hell... 4 though? 20 to thirty minute cut scenes followed by more 30 to 40 minute cut scenes followed by a gameplay sequence where I have to follow someone for 30 minutes? Fuck that shit... it's a shame too because MGS3 Snake eater was fucking brilliant.

MGS4 annoyed the shit out of me to the point I never even finished it and is the reason I refused to even check out MGS5 for several years. I just remember endless gameplay-less drivel. The earlier games at least struck a good balance despite sometimes stretching my patience. MGS4 though, jesus...

I was so fucking happy to find out MGS5 is simply Snake Simulator and he basically shuts the hell up 90% of the time.

Of my shit...of life in general...or just kinda tired because you didn't sleep well kinda tired? I hope it's option C sprinkled with just a tiny bit of A maybe.

Spoiler

Mostly option C, with the fact I worked all night and worked out this morning and have another night of work to go.

Speaking of which, I gotta go to sleep!

You'll have your chance soon!

I'm frustrated that Square seemingly isn't giving a Steam discount for those that own the original.

I'm not buying it anyways unless modders clean up the backgrounds with Gigapixel/ESRGAN, as SquareEnix should have.

In a nutshell, this article addresses some of it. But you can find deeper dives as well. Essentially false equivalencies and problematic centrism are the main quibbles in this article.

I know there’s more to it, but it has been some time since the think pieces were written, and like i said personally I didn’t catch on to that stuff initially. I loved the game start to finish. And I certainly agree that centrism and false equivalencies are extremely problematic, I didn’t like how some people pretended like they knew all along that’s what the game was espousing.

I think they are selling it $5 than the original was, so that's a plus. I never bought it. I just always had it on my wishlist.

I really really enjoyed the hacking puzzles for locks and turrets and stuff like that, BS Infinite took all that and made it a point and click and then presented us with a wonderful looking FPS that wasn't a FPS, that's my vote as the biggest disappointment of all time at least for me. I loved BS1 and BS2, many didn't but the murdered everything that made those games cool and fun to explore.

Little Big Planet isn’t fun at all, so that is my vote.

Oh, shit, I didn't even see that one. That could easily be my #2. People seem to love it and I just don't get it. I tried the first one and it did nothing for me. Later, I was dumb enough to get Tearaway because of all the praise and the general lack of Vita content and it was almost the same story. I did push myself to play it a little further, but ultimately, I was pretty blah on it.
