Yup, from a pure FPS campaign Doom is the once, resent, and hopefully future king! Its kinetic, forward moving, favoring the offensive style makes you feel like a carnage machine on roller skates! :sun:

Unlike FPS games of the last 10 years or so, the game absolutely rewards aggression which makes for vastly more interesting play.

So far of the 4 or 5 points I've gotten that I can put towards health, armour, or ammo, I've put all into ammo, haha. I just run around shooting things, I think the W key is held down about 90% of the time. The glory kills are actually fun, too, unlike many games.

How long is the campaign? I'm about 4 hours in I think, and I don't want it to end!

The main campaign is around 10-12 hours depending on your capabilities. For me it was closer to 12! :p

Best single-player FPS in over a decade.

This is a though call for me simply because Bishock Infinite was in 2013. Very different game, but more significant to me.

Also Shadow Warrior 2 was pretty great for something in the same space as Doom 2016.

Each have their merits, but if you took away everything but the core mechanics and then said which of these best exemplifies a classic shooter while making the experience modern and fresh, which would have your vote then? I adore the bioshock franchise, but I think of it as an ARPG more than straight forward FPS. Shadow Warrior 2 certainly does some fun things, but I think Doom has better level design and a tighter play loop. It does lack wang though! :p

Yeah BI is different enough that I'm willing to exclude it from the consideration set. In terms of core shooting mechanics, Doom is better than it too. (But not a better game, IMO)

Compared to SW2, it's honestly tough for me. I think Doom 2016 at its best is better than SW2, but the averages are pretty competitive.

The next doom might widen that gap though. From the preview they showed, it looks like they're pushing it exactly along the directions where it excelled, and that's really exciting.

From a gameplay perspective, it is by far my favorite single player shooter. I love how the game encourages and rewards an aggressive playstyle. My only wish for the game is that I wanted bigger fights. On Ultra Violence it felt like the enemies were well-balanced, I just wanted more of them by the end of the game.

The new Wolfenstein games are fantastic in every respect...except the actual gameplay.

Gunplay, feedback and worse, level design, in these games are bafflingly bad. Never understood the high praise, strip away the style and spectacle and you're left with some fairly sub-par gameplay.

I somehow bought both out of sheer thirst for an FPS.

I'm very interested in Ion Maiden right now, hopefully that delivers especially on the level design front.

I mean with the New Colossus I wasn't a fan of the gunplay and perks, but I legitimately thought the gameplay for The New Order was good.  Plus, it favored both stealth and all-out gun fights.

Choose the upgrade path for the Micro Missiles on the assault rifle as soon as you can.  Those things are deadly even in late game.

Also I hope you don't come across the same bug I did.  I killed every demon in the level, but the music was still playing and the locked door wouldn't open up.  Had to restart the level and kill everything again.  I'm guessing one of the demons glitched through a wall or something, as the AI can be pretty dumb sometimes.
