Update: Nancy Pelosi's husband injured following failed assassination attempt

Recommended Posts

The SF Chronicle article I read said that the attacker took the hammer from Pelosi and beat him with it, so it would appear the guy did not show up with any weapons at all. Very bizarre.

From CNN:

Quote

Two of DePape's relatives told CNN that DePape is estranged from his family, and confirmed that the Facebook account – which was taken down by the social media company on Friday – belonged to him.

His stepfather, Gene DePape, said David DePape grew up in Powell River, British Columbia, and left Canada about 20 years ago to pursue a relationship that brought him to California.

Last year, David DePape posted links on his Facebook page to multiple videos produced by My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell falsely alleging that the 2020 election was stolen. Other posts included transphobic images and linked to websites claiming Covid-19 vaccines were deadly. "The death rates being promoted are what ever 'THEY' want to be promoted as the death rate," one post read.

DePape also posted links to YouTube videos with titles like "Democrat FARCE Commission to Investigate January 6th Capitol Riot COLLAPSES in Congress!!!" and "Global Elites Plan To Take Control Of YOUR Money! (Revealed)"

Two days after former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of killing George Floyd, DePape wrote that the trial was "a modern lynching," falsely indicating that Floyd died of a drug overdose.

He also posted content about the "Great Reset" – the sprawling conspiracy theory that global elites are using coronavirus to usher in a new world order in which they gain more power and oppress the masses. And he complained that politicians making promises to try to win votes "are offering you bribes in exchange for your further enslavement."

It appears the man was radicalized by Gamergate, and then following events.

It really is amazing that so few points in the early stages of the mass adoption of the internet had massive ripple effects when creating the world we are in today. Lowtax banning anime/ anime porn on the something awful forums lead to the creation of 4chan and all that spawned from that. And a dispute over video game reviews that was gamergate radicalized many young men into the nazi shit on 4chan.

They’ve been trying to set a narrative of “the violent left” for almost a decade. Of course they’ll downplay this. I’m just shocked none of them said it’s all crisis actors or “it was actually antifa!” yet (I’m sure someone is about to reply to me with a tweet and/or video showing that it’s happened already :p )

The only American institution that isn’t currently failing is the gun-nut industry.

Apparently the emerging nutso theory is that it was a lover's quarrel, lol.  "we're gonna kill all the demoncrats for destroying America!"  When one actually attempts it, its an OP! or Akshually they killed themselves!

As soon as I saw that he had a history with some kind of nudism movement, I knew this guy was gonna get sorted into the bucket of "generic weirdo with inscrutable motivations" by the media, even though there's a very obvious throughline of reactionary politics in his online presence. After January 6th there were a lot of takes online that basically amounted to, "It was never that serious of a coup attempt because a serious coup attempt would not have a guy dressed like the Q-Anon shaman there." I think this is the same basic thought process at work here.

Media literacy matters. There's thousands of years of human knowledge in pages but it's not an 'experience'. Instead you're forced to digest it.

Yeah, I mean he’s a crazy nut. That’s not in debate. The problem is that when you spew a non-stop stream of batshit crazy over-the-top news stories specifically designed to anger and inflame… crazy people see those too and then go out and do stuff like this.

I liked how the obligatory “who was this guy” story on Fox News downplayed all of the right wing stuff he has been verified to have been deeply bought into and emphasized all the nudist stuff. They didn’t mention any of it really and simply said, he believed in “conspiracy theories”… yeah, conspiracy theory’s that are routinely pushed on your own fucking station.  It not a conspiracy if it’s the mainstream republican message you disingenuous shitlords.
