Update: Maybe not? Original: OnlyFans to prohibit "sexually explicit" content on platform

Yep. See edit. It makes more sense now, but it's still them going "you know how people come here for porn? What if we just didn't do porn anymore?" And expecting it to go differently than it did for Tumblr. Pornhub has been making it work. It just seems like nuking your platform is the stupidest option they have and they're taking it. They're basically trying to make a new YouTube with OFTV and onlyfans into a new Patreon. Only YouTube and Patreon already exist.

Though I suppose Patreon will also have to follow suit with guidelines, though they aren't explicitly known for porn, so it doesn't affect them as much.

PH has had its own issues with CC processors, and changed their whole business model chasing them

Their issues were the same as OnlyFans here. The lack of moderation lead to a lot of illegal content hosted on their site. The biggest difference here is that OnlyFans didn't seem to want to actually perform any kind of moderation and are, instead, opting to just do away with the entire genre.

Layered on top of it though is that supposedly they weren't intending to make a porn site and have always been kind of butthurt that it became known as a porn site. So it seems like Mastercard is forcing the issue but that on their end it's more like a convenient excuse to jettison a lot of the stuff they never actually wanted in the first place. Compare to Pornhub, which was probably willing to figure out how to do the content moderation because they did in fact set out from the start to make a porn site.

I'm guessing maybe the original owner or current minority owner(s) didn't intend for it to be NSFW. The guy who owns it now also owns MFC and according to his wiki, OF became predominantly NSFW when he bought it; likely because he pimped it out to all his camgirls.

A lot of these tech companies and websites don't want to have to actually moderate anything.  They just want to apply algorithms to monitor it all for them, then sit back and watch the money flow in.  But unfortunately, that's not a viable solution because no algorithm is perfect.  Neither is examining every single piece of created content, because there is so much being created at once that having someone examine and verify it before it gets posted would cause a huge bottleneck and the wait time would approach infinity.

I wish I knew what the solution is, but I don't...if there even is one.

Because a lot of them are putting up videos of them having sex with other people.

Yes, but make it clear anyone appearing on OF has to be pre-cleared. It's pretty simple and easy to keep a database of who is cleared by the company.  A simple licensing system, and only other licensed individuals allowed in sexual content.

Its not like they don't make enough to set it up, and can probably charge a couple of points per transaction to fund it.

How is porn different from movies, tv, or music in this context? You can get almost all of that for free without effort, too.

I mean, when I go to a movie, I watch the whole movie.

When I watch porn, im watching it to get off quick, and every kind of porn I could ever want is already free and readily accessible. No torrents, no vpns, nothing. Its free and legal. To each their own, but I'd never pay for porn.

That makes sense...but it's still a terrible business decision that will end with the company either shuttering, or at least shrinking and losing a bunch of their employees, etc. It would like if Mr. Donald Pepsi always wanted to sell collectable bottlecaps and accidentally invented a giant soda company...and would be happy if the soda part got shut down.

I think you’re overestimating people’s engagement with other media and underestimating people’s engagement with porn.

“Story is terrible, plot hole. How could the pizza guy take 30 minutes for sex as payment when he has other deliveries to make? Totally flaccid because of this.”

Honestly, I picture Kal as being into classy international espeennage spy porn.

In his defense, he didn't say he didn't believe it, only that he was shocked by it. I too am often shocked by the decisions of the general public, even though I believe it :p Somehow, even expecting the worse doesn't remove the shock.

  • Jason changed the title to Update: Maybe not? Original: OnlyFans to prohibit "sexually explicit" content on platform

While Onlyfans is the brand most people think of when it comes to this, the brand name is damaged in eyes of SWs. Seems like a lot of camgirls have bolted to Fansly, which, mentioned above, crashed last week. I've also heard the name Pocketstars, FanCentro, JustForFans thrown around. It's almost like a conglomerate just broke up into many sub-corps.

Probably too late to walk this back, creators won't trust the platform after something like this.

It's amazing what happens after everyone decides to jump ship after you make a stupid, horrible decision. This is a lot like that one time I told my billionaire, bikini supermodel astrophysicist girlfriend we should probably see other people. Didn't go the way I planned.

they might be okay. a lot of creators probably won’t want to migrate to a new site and worry about making less money per month.

but i’m sure onlyfans is going to continue doing stupid shit, so eventually people will leave lol.

There's this bar in Portland called Swift. It's like a hybrid dive bar/night club. They have DJs, mason jar cocktails, and lots of dickheads there every night. I remember when that bar opened. The owner wanted it to be like a poschy beer/cocktail bar with limited food options (in Portland, everyone has to have food options). Initially, it wasn't doing too great. There were a ton of other bars around the place that were doing the same thing only better. Eventually, the bartending staff, who were all friends with each other, started having all of their friends come over. They were all hipster assholes. Before you know it, it became a hipster asshole hangout. Not what the owner wanted, but it was making money. Fast forward to now, what, 6 years later? Guess what's still making money as a stupid fucking hipster hangout shit shed? Swift. Most new bars don't make it 18 months.

The level of privilege, fuckery, assholery, tomfoolery, and general fuckiness that it takes for someone to stumble across the fucking gold mine that is OnlyFans and go "but naaaah, that isn't what we wanted" makes me want to kind of murder everyone involved.

Like, YOU STUMBLED ACROSS A GOLD MINE AND JUST SAID "BUT WE WANTED COBALT"

Ask fucking Pornhub help for their content policies and algorithims, invest *a little bit* in implementing those policies, and then rake in your millions, you fucking troglodytes. If you have any delusions that you can create an alternative to YouTube, godspeed, also you're a bunch of fucking idiots
