First 2 seasons are great. Season 3 is a bit different in vibe and some people think it's the weakest season. Personally, I really enjoyed it.

I liked season 3 and thought the 2nd season was easily the weakest of the series. I’m only 5 episodes into season 4 and I have it right up there with Season 1, for how much I’m loving how things are going.

Nice. I'm on episode 2 in season 4 and it's been solid.

Full of interesting ideas but unfortunately felt like the movie simply moved from tedious exposition dump to the next tedious exposition dump without any flow nor excitement. Some cool visuals and well, ideas, but it was surprisingly...boring.

Totally valid complaint and I can see that being too much to overlook for many, but I guess it really comes down to how under the spell of this thing you fall, which is how I would describe my viewing experience. And it’s not even so much the look or production design or setting (Athens worked incredibly well), but the score (god I love the score here) and really the performances that do it for me. Everyone is so constantly aroused, but unable to act upon their desires in conventional ways so they turn to increasingly odd avenues to explore their impulses. I remember thinking about ten minutes prior to the end that it didn’t feel like things were wrapping up even though it’d been a while then that whopper of an ending came and the credits started and I audibly demanded MORE to an audience of one. It's set up, but still comes about abruptly and sneakily and it left me in tears.

I love Viggo battling his body as he delivers his lines, in a way that conveys how tedious and every-day this struggle is for him. I love Kristen’s riled-up-teen vibe that’s a lot more at home in this world than the modern world. I love Don McKellar constantly trying (and failing spectacularly) to hide how excited he is by all the crazy shit going on around him. Lea is doing about what I’ve seen from her thus far, but it’s very at home in this movie. Everyone is working in concert with one another and it paid off wonderfully in my eyes.

So yeah, big hit for me. Sorry it didn’t work for you as much. I vaguely recall your admiration for Cronenberg, and I know it’s a bummer when someone you’re a fan of doesn’t connect with you on a project.

Nah I don't think it's a bummer. Really most of my favorite artists have releases I just don't like for some reason or another. A lot of aspects you brought up definitely do work well, for me it just never gelled as a cohesive, exciting movie for me.

I've had my ups and downs with Cronenberg's movies. I always loved some of his less classic stuff like Crash for some reason but didn't really get Videodrome when I was younger. Recently went on a binge, maybe last year, and The Brood, Videodrome and Dead Ringers all hit me in some perfect way. Maybe because I'm feeling especially bleak about our increasingly dystopian world.

Also, the soundtrack was absolutely great here, yup.

Saw the new Dr Strange at the cinema, liked it, never loved it.

Watched the latest Matrix film last night, I found it silly fun at the start, but then not much happens and then it’s over. Felt more like a 6 part TV series would have been more appropriate.

Drink-Drank-Drunk: 7/10

Drink-Drank-Drunk is a Chinese romantic comedy about a beer girl who meets a wandering French chef. Siu-Man is a girl who doesn't get drunk even after drinking a straight pint of whisky, considered "ugly" and getting "old" but she's never had a real relationship. She meets a guy named Michael who is a globetrotter of sorts but also studied French cuisine (in France), and he's kind of drunk and follows her home but since he's got no place to stay she lets him stay at her house. Then she sees he's got a failing restaurant (French food maybe too sophisticated for her part of China) and decides to work out a business deal to open a cafe during the day. So from there they kind of develop feelings and it's up to her to see if she can tame him or if his feelings are real or whatever.

I think it's an interesting slice of life type of movie. It's a bit silly, not "super lol funny" although I did laugh at this durian gag. Also sort of funny is there is no woman that looks like the lady on the cover, I think that's just purely a jebait. Also (also!) dating this movie the previews on the disc said, "Available on dvd and UMD!" :o

My vampire obsessed GF made me watch the first episode of First Kill with her.  Sigh. . .standard young adult crap with way too much music, that blares even during dialogue.  She's on her own next time.   If there weren't F-bombs, this would be right at home on The CW.

It's a girl/girl Romeo and Juliet where one girl is a vampire and the other, a slayer, so you have to whole forbidden love thing going; hell, one of the girls is even named Juliette.

Brother Bear: I’ve never watched this before, but daughter woke up at 4.50 this morning, so a film seemed like a good idea. It was much better than I remember it reviewing, tho if h the story sort of just…resolves and ends without enough effort. That said, like every movie now that has anything sad, I nearly went.

I agree with you guys. I just finished season 3, and thought that it was great. It was better than season 2 IMO. It was a good mix of action, comedy, horror and feels. Now onto season 4.

The Devil All the Time

A wallow in misery and nihilism without any commentary or even mordant distance or purpose of any sort. Real shame because Campos's previous film, Christine, is very near and dear to my heart, and the bench of actors here is deep. I actually started this up because I was aiming to begin a Mia Wasikowska kick and ... let's just say, this film is particularly unkind to its female characters. Neat set-ups though, and, in spite of Netflix's awful encoding, the genuine film stock was instantly recognized and always appreciated.

Hustle - 8/10

Def not on the level of Uncut Gems but still very good. Pretty paint by numbers sports movie. It’s basically The Scout but with basketball and without the insanely stupid ending. Sandler is fantastic and his love of the sport comes through. Also very cool seeing so many real NBA players/coaches/execs scattered through out.

The Assassin: 6/10

I was interested in seeing this as it was another film staring Shu Qi. She plays an assassin but has a conscience as she stops killing her targets. One target happens to be her brother, or something like that. The movie is directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien which reunites him and Shu Qui for at least the 3rd time, if you recall he directed another movie I watched called Millennium Mambo. His style is very much let the movie be as natural as possible, like a Terrence Malick type of style but a bit different. So the movie feels a bit dry. You get long takes of goats just sitting around chewing or a lady playing a zither as you stare at some flowers, so it makes following the plot not as straightforward as you like. But there is plenty of dialogue, just not a lot of exposition so you're supposed to know who Tian Ji'an already and things of that nature. One thing is for sure that the budget must have been perverse because the sets, props and costumes are all amazing, they look truly authentic. I just wish the movie had a little bit more bite.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Dire first-draft vibes for about 30 minutes, then settles into dull blockbuster territory. Campbell Scott was a nice surprise, and doing small wonderful things with absolutely nothing.

Shithouse

There’s a tiny core of an interesting idea at the heart of the main character regarding his reliance on and desire for childhood security and close relationship with his mother and sister, and this leads to the closest thing this movie has to a good scene towards the end. But god, the rest of this is horrifically dramatized nothingness. First half is either a poorly written and performed mumblecore-adjacent riff, or substandard improv. Second half is a bit more punch from both a writing and editing standpoint, but still never really comes together in a meaningful way. Raiff falls on the bad side of naturalistic dialogue where he fails to capture anything genuine or revealing.

Cha Cha Real Smooth

Clearer growth and progression of the main character, but liked this even less than Shithouse. Shocked to find out after the fact that Raiff was not intended to play the lead, because he is constantly spoken of and to in the most glowing terms that frame him in the best possible light. The lack of self-awareness is staggering. There’s a scene of two characters discussing depression and bipolar disorder that demonstrates a complete absence of understanding about mental health. Lola exists merely to show how great Andrew is, and to facilitate the plot. Thin dialogue masquerading as How People Talk is worse here, as is Raiff’s performance. And for the presumable upgrade in budget, this is a way more incompetent effort than his debut.

The World of Kanako: 7/10

The World of Kanako could best be described as an evil version of The Big Lebowki. Koji Yakusho plays Akikazu Fujishima, an alcoholic, mentally unstable, abusive former detective. Add neglectful father to that list as this guy seemingly lives in another world. His wife calls him to tell him his daughter is missing yet he can barely recall what she looks like. The journey of his investigation of what she was up to reveals that maybe she was as bad if not worse than her father as a tale of drugs, violence, suicide and rape begin to unravel. It's a pretty dark movie with subject matter few movies dare to touch. That being said if you can bear to watch this series of events unravel it is well done and certainly an interesting watch.

Miami Vice

A film I have avoided, growing up watching the show I always assumed this was some terrible idea to sell as 80's nostalgia. It shares the basic gist of the show but its own beast. The entire film feels like it gives no fucks about the audience, there is no explanation and no backstory. The audience is dropped in the middle of a scene as if the first 10 minutes of the movie are missing. The dialog can be hard to hear and filled with jargon that you likely dont know. Mann drenches the film in Noir and locations feel lived in and real. One thing I cant explain is how the film makes the audience feel like they are just on the out skirts of each scene, it makes it seem almost shallow but its not. There is also no levity through humor that seems to be popular, I am really over that in movies right now.

My only 2 complaints are the love story that seems a bit cheesy and the fact this film was an early digital film so there is a lot of noise that can be distracting.

Sleep Tight (Mientras duermes): 8/10

Sleep Tight is yet another Filmax produced movies. I thought I had gotten through them but here we are yet again. It's directed by Jaume Balagueró who had previously done The Nameless (And the Rec movies that I still haven't seen) and the movie is actually pretty good. The film begins quite normally. We are introduced to Cesar, he's a concierge / handyman at an apartment building. He begins his day waking up next to a woman and leaving to go to work, and we see he's quite polite and seemingly a well mannered person (Although he is very formal with the woman he was sleeping next to the night before). But it isn't until that evening that we see how twisted Cesar really is. Not only does he lie and manipulate others worst of all he drugs this woman and sleeps with her at night. I guess his whole deal is he's unable to feel happiness so he wants everyone he knows to wallow in sorrow with him. You could consider this psychological horror but it leans more into the psychological mind games, and it's certainly something unnerving.

Armageddon - 2/10

Dear lord, do you know how much a movie has to suck for me to not even enjoy it while watching it on a plane?

It's objectively terrible. Every character interaction is unearned. No one progresses. It's just a series of scenes that are loosely related. I only gave it a 2 because It's surprisingly well acted for what it is.

Spriggan: 8/10

I was not a viewer of the Spriggan anime that came out in 1998, I had always seen the box art but never got around to seeing it. 2022 rolls around and surprise, Spriggan is back as a Netflix show. The anime was supplemented by a handful of behind the scenes footage, which is actually pretty cool be cause it's something you rarely see. This anime is actually adapted from the various volumes of the manga. From what I understand the movie only focuses on one volume and takes some artistic liberties with the story. So this show is, for better or worse, a more accurate representation of the Manga the art director even going so far as to storyboarding the show based on the pages from the Manga.

The show is pretty cool. It's kind of a supernatural action movie, like something along the lines of a metal gear meets X-files or something like that. All episodes are self contained so the story doesn't have a continuity so, again, it's kind of like an X-Files monster of the week type thing. A lot of it focusing on Yu working for ARCAM to get ancient artifacts that contain or lead to some type of extraordinary thing. The first two episodes are almost balls to the walls old school gory anime stuff but the rest of the episodes focus more on strange adventures which I think I enjoyed more. Episode 3 was probably my favorite with a focus on a mysterious forest.

It was kind of strange to see them hype of Jean and Mirage (and they even show up in the intro) but only get one  episode. Though if you're a big fan of Yoshino you get to see her many times. Which also ties into another cool aspect, they've kind of given Yu some depth from what I understand from the making of they show more of his personal (school) life. Normally I'd be like "oh great high school crap how original " but in the case of this show it serves as a nice change of pace. It makes Yu feel more like a Peter Parker type of guy.

The look of the show is 3d mixed with 2D animation. Supposedly the faces are animated the rest is 3D but it is so well done that it's really hard to tell what is what. I mean there are a couple of spots that stand out towards the end like the Berzerker, but for the most part it's well done. I would welcome more episodes of this show. There are 11 volumes of the manga and I can only assume this covers six (I honestly don't know) but there is an extra scene at the end of the last episode that would indicate more are on the way. With each episode being over 40 minutes long this feels about the length of a regular anime series just with longer episodes. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with this and if you're unfamiliar with this series I would say this is probably the best spot to jump in.

If you’re worried about “earned character interaction” “character progress” in this movie you’re doing it wrong. Might as well dock it another point for failing to address the duality of man while you’re at it lol.

I think you watched it wrong. Armageddon is in the Criterion Collection for a reason. Great movie . . . just not a normal movie. :p

Armageddon is 24 years old, and you just now saw it? What movies did you watch growing up, because that was a pretty big one back when it came out. I haven’t seen it in a long time so I don’t know what I would think of it now, but I enjoyed it back in the day. While I wouldn’t say that it’s a great movie, it’s definitely better than a 2/10 IMO.
