Belle: 9/10

Belle is the latest (and greatest) movie from writer & director Mamoru Hosoda. Five years in the making (with two of those pandemic years) he really went all out for this one. The character design for Belle is Jin Kim who worked on Frozen and Tangled (among others) and features three musical composers one, Ludvig Forssell, who composed the Death Stranding soundtrack. Even more astounding is the voice actress in both English and Japanese both sang and acted their roles.

If you're familiar with Hosoda's work this one may tread familiar ground, in fact he says as much in one of the interviews. The movie takes place in both a virtual world called "U" and the real world called "Japan." The main character Suzu had a traumatic past when she was six years old. Not ever really able to cope with reality she found "U" which allowed her to break free from her sorrow as an avatar named Belle. Suzu had been brought up around music when she was young but the incident when from when she was young prevented her from singing, but in U she is able to let loose. Later another character appears that others dub "The Beast" and well I think a lot of us are familiar with that story. So the movie is kind of like his previous movie, "Summer Wars" but the incorporation of the virtual world in this one leads to a bit more grounded and sad reality.

Now haters of CG anime all i have to say is: Animation Wow GIF

The animation is incredible. In fact Hosoda went on to say that this movie is the most convincing CG anime depiction of emotion EVER. And I can't say I disagree. A lot of attention to detail was paid to every part of this movie. In fact if you're one of those dub perverts you're in luck because NYAV Post did the dub. Belle is an excellent movie and dare I say one of Hosoda's best 🤔

I finished season 4 of Stranger Things, and I found it to be a mixed bag. It had some great moments mixed with some not so great ones. It felt a bit drawn-out, and repetitive. I still liked it, but not as much as seasons 1 and 3.

I started watching Arcane: League of Legends, and it’s better than I was expecting it to be. I know nothing about the game, but I’ve heard that you don’t need to. The art, animation and voice work are all topnotch, and the story and characters have been interesting. It’s a good mix of action, and drama.

The Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie

An interesting take on the Zombie genre released prior to Dawn Of The Dead and after NOTLD. Romero's trilogy always used that claustrophobic feel in its settings and decay of not just the dead but of society as well. This film takes place in the beautiful and lush English country side, the film feels almost ethereal compared to Romero's. It uses just a handful of zombies that are extremely strong compared to dozens or hundred weak ones. A big complaint from me is that the film just takes a bit too long to get moving. The soundtrack and sound effects are top notch and the gore and half bad either.

6.5/10

I finished the first season of Arcane: League of Legends, and it was excellent. Easily one of the best animated shows that I’ve seen. Everything about it is quality. I think that the second season is supposed to come out this year, I hope so because the first season ends with a pretty big cliffhanger.

I have a soft spot for this flick but man is the "scorned hippy" shit in the beginning grating. I also never liked the goofy agricultural machine angle. Aside from that, it has some really high highs for me. It's like Doom Metal, the movie. When it goes English gothic, it goes hard and I especially love some of the cinematography and eerie-ass hospital stuff in the last act.

That being said, It's probably a 6.5 for me as well, maybe a 7 if I'm generous. This movie kind of sums up how I feel about most of these 70s flicks at this stage.  I used to love them but most of them are pretty obnoxious and bad but with a few high-highs type sequences.

PS: Have you seen The Grapes Of Death? The pastoral French setting in that is really cool too and worth a viewing despite being typical Rollin trash.

I watched The Princess, and really liked it. It’s basically a beat ‘em up/hack ‘n slash game in movie form. A medieval martial arts movie. It’s nonstop action with some cool fight scenes, and a dash of humor. I found it to be fun and entertaining throughout.

Treasure Planet: 7/10

Treasure Planet was one of those Disney films that came from that turn of the century forgotten period between Tarzan and The Princess of the Frog alongside the rise of Pixar movies. The movie still holds the record of most expensive traditionally animated film of all time with a budget of $140 million. The film is a mix of traditional and 3D animation but doesn't look too remarkable in either direction (at least in a world where it released between Monsters, Inc and Finding Nemo). Though it is hard to comment on the 3D 20 years later I can say that the 2D is a mixed bag. Any alien creature actually looks kind of cool, but something about Jim's look was kind of goofy.

The story is basically an adaptation of Treasure Island except this one is in space. One thing I did think while watching it is how much more interesting it was than Star Wars Episode 1, which it reminded me of a bit because it was about some kid on a planet zooming around on some sort of speedy surfboard, plus all the alien creatures are pretty interesting. Overall there aren't many surprises since the movie spells everything out way ahead of time. I'm not entirely sure of that John Silver deserved his redemption. The movie's big song is also Goo Goo Dolls butt rock which isn't anything special but certainly make the movie feel like a product of the time. Overall the movie is okay. It's interesting to see a Disney movie that doesn't feel Disney and also one that no one talks about.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds

Best first season of Trek since TOS and it maybe beats it but has the advantage of only having to put out 10 episodes so they can focus on quality instead of quantity. Great cast in terms of characters and actors, excellent production values and it has the proper Trek adventure spirit to it where it can have serious plots without being excessively dark. My only complaints are Spock continuing to be the center of the Star trek universe at Skywalker levels of importance and also I did not like the Gorn being straight up monsters that hunt and eat everyone they come across.

That mix of 2D and CGI was pretty awesome looking when it came out.

I like Treasure Planet a lot. It def exists in that space of underrated Disney movies that don’t get enough love with Emporers New Groove and Lilo and Stitch.

Fuck a yeah on Lilo and Stitch. There is something about that movie that just resonates with me. I was so-so on Treasure Planet (should give another go one day) but enjoyed New Groove

Heaven's Lost Property Final - The Movie: Eternally My Master: 5/10

I had previously seen all of these almost a year ago. The only thing left on my list was this movie which had been unreleased in America since 2014 until January of this year. Sadly the movie is kind of a confusing mess. It didn't help that I had forgotten some things (like the girl who shows up only in the previous movie is in this) but it is kind of a jumbled rush. It's only 50 minutes long and begins with the earth ending, then a flashback of the events that lead up to it which was basically Tomoki wanting Ikaros to smile and some other wacky stuff (which lives up to the show) but by the end the stuff that was left up in the air since the other movie, like the Master of the Synapse stuff, is still unresolved. It's a nice trip down memory lane which doesn't help spark any memories and offers no closure to the series. After eight years I guess we will have to accept this series has no resolution in sight.

It's 3am and you're creating threads lol. You live on these boards. I'm only awake now because I got a call from an employee at work a few minutes ago.

Snowpiercer: 8/10

Before Writer/Director Bong Joon-ho was making Oscar winning films he made Snowpiercer (among other things). While I enjoyed Parasite but thought that "this is the movie that's getting you to notice Korean movies?" he basically made a similar movie with Snowpiercer. I've enjoyed myself a good amount of Korean media and if getting past the language barrier is the biggest challenge then isn't having a Korean director make an English movie the next best thing? I would say so and wondering why it doesn't happen more (although from reading about this one sounds like Harvey Weinstein was content with fucking the movie up).

Snowpiercer is a post-apocalyptic movie of sorts. Man created an artificial ice age in response to global warning. Everything on the face of the earth was wiped out except for a handful of survivors who live on a train that sustains life. Despite life almost getting wiped out train life isn't much better, there's still a class system, poverty, inequality, etc. So Chris Evans, THE Captain America, leads a revolution to get from the back of the train to the front of the train. The idea is of course absurd, but it's just crazy enough to believe or at least enjoy. There's some stylish action and maybe a little bit of silliness thrown in. The most impressive part about the movie is probably the cast. The movie is stacked Chris Evans, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer and even a nearly unrecognizable Tilda Swinton is a pretty loaded roster, especially for a movie that I wouldn't say was super huge. I had small gripes with the movie, like the huge exposition dump towards the end but other than that the good certainly outweighs the bad.

The Wheel of Time - 7/10 - what an uneven first season. I watched due to the hype of the books, but stayed for Rosamund Pike. Her performance is great. Not sure if I would have watched all of it without her. I didn’t care for the actors/actresses that much.

Cabaret - a perfect example of me having no idea what a classic movie is actually about. I mostly knew it as “that musical that upset The Godfather for some key Oscars (Director and supporting actor)”. Also, my only real context for Liza Minnelli for a long time was Arrested Development, so it’s nice to see her in her prime and experience her almost overwhelming star power.

All That Jazz - What a fascinating object. I’ve never seen anything like it.

So I think The Outsider might have one of the worst mid-season dive bombs of quality, or pacing specifically, I've seen in a show in memory. First few episodes are like edge-of-my-seat levels of engrossing and mysterious and then they just completely squander any ounce of mystery and excitement until I just gave up in episode 7 now. Impressive, seriously. No wonder they cancelled it, they ran out material by episode 4, holy shit.

If you're talking about the Ben Mendelsohn show, that wasn't cancelled.

Quote

It was announced in November 2020 that HBO was cancelling The Outsider after just one season, but the show's production company, MRC, is supposedly looking for new homes

I mean you can add "for now" but S2 was definitely cancelled.

PS: I love Ben Mendelsohn, this guy has the charisma of like ten other actors put together.

Haha no what I mean is that the show was originally going to be a limited series/miniseries, a "maybe" season 2 was a surprise announcement. I don't know where a season 2 currently stands (I'd say dead in the water), but with the way the show ends, it doesn't need one in the sense this was never meant to be a series, is my understanding.

Yeah I didn't even finish it yet. I went from watching four hours in a row to falling asleep every 20 minutes in the last two episodes.

Mad God (2021)

A constant assault of odoriferous violence, although not without cause. This is not a movie with a plot, but a motif. The endless procession of extrusion and extractions of vile acts that feed a cause with no end, no matter how much the world teeters at edge, completely senseless in it's sufficiency. It is the parable of state and church, and their inherent similarities and goals. This machine creates stardust.

It gets more fantastical/ridiculous towards the end but my wife and I binged it and we enjoyed it thoroughly all the way through.
