Head-On (Gegen die Wand): 8/10

Head-On takes place in the quaint city of Hamburg. It's about two suicidal people. Well one, Cahit, is hard to call suicidal. He's a mess. Drugs, alcohol, you name it he's on it and giving no fucks. One night he decides to run head-on into a wall. He survives and is taken to a psychiatric hospital where he meets the most beautiful Turkish woman you've ever seen (actually she is Sibel Kekilli, you might have seen her as Shae on Game of Thrones). In any case Sibel notices that Cahit is Turkish and asks if he wants to get married. But even a suicidal drunk guy has some common sense, well for a moment anyway. In any case it's a no strings attached marriage, only so she can escape her very traditional Turkish family and do what she wants. So, after a dramatic night out Cahit decides he will marry her and he goes through a strict interview process in order to get the family's approval. Cahit is still very much a mess but this whole process becomes a turning point for him and even though this is essentially a fake marriage the mere act of having her live with him allows him to maybe start cleaning up his act. Then comes the big question could the two actually develop feelings for each other?

I believe this is considered the landmark movie for Director Faith Akin, he actually most recently won a Golden Globe for In the Fade in 2017. Both Sibel and Birol Ünel turn in some spectacular performances. Ünel unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2020. This is really an interesting movie that takes a conventional story and puts an unconventional spin on it. It's a different look at life from the perspective of a different culture and although the themes maybe dark it's a captivating film to watch.

Outer Range (Amazon series) - a weird one. I wasn’t paying attention and thought this was a limited series (while it's clearly labeled season 1). If I had realized that it wasn’t going to be wrapped up, I probably would have given up after the first couple episodes. Don’t think I’ll watch season 2 if/when that happens, unless they really tighten up the pacing.

I saw it on Amazon I think but I only saw there were like 3 episodes. Are there more than that?

I don't watch the show but from looking online it seems 6 out of 10 episodes have dropped so far. Episodes drop on Fridays, with 4 episodes released on Friday May 6th and then another 2 released on Friday May 13th. Looks like they plan to release two episodes every Friday.

I watched The Dirt on Netflix, it’s a movie about the band Motley Crue. I’m not really sure why it’s called The Dirt, I think that a better name for it would have been The Crue. Regardless, it was decent IMO. I was a fan of Motley Crue in the 80s, but I stopped listening to them after that.

The movie is a raunchy dark comedy for a good part of it focusing more on the partying of the members than on their music, but gets more serious closer to the end.

I don’t know how much of the movie is fact or fiction, but it was fairly entertaining. My only real gripe is that the actor that played Vince Neil seemed miscast as he didn’t really look, sound, or act like him. But other than that, it was alright.

Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Ranger 3.75/5

Consider this Roger Rabbit with the dial tone stuck at an 11. The amount of characters from the various other studios at times is staggering. For fans of the show, it does indeed play on the nostalgia factor a lot and has no problems poking fun at itself either. Would love too see another movie or an actual series reboot like DuckTales got. If not, give me what is demanded at the end of the movie by another cartoon character.

52 Pick-Up: 7/10

Directed by John Frankenheimer comes a turn off your brain type of thriller. Roy Scheider plays Harry Mitchell, the head of some steel company rides around in a Jag convertable so one would assume he's reasonably wealthy. Three criminals think the same thing and decide to blackmail him so they can get 100,000 dollars (wow! :o ) He refuses to pay them of course and the blackmailers raise the stakes by framing him for murder. Harry of course doesn't want to involve the police and dupe the criminals by himself. On one hand there are plenty of opportunities to bring the authorities in, but what fun is that? But on the flip side the ending doesn't quite follow the rest of the movie as surely there would be a police investigation.

So the story is ho hum but the surrounding cast kind of sell the movie. The late Clarence William III and John Glover make for a pretty despicable pair. And Vanity (also dead, yikes!) is in here as well. Also, the cinematography is better than you'd expect. The cinematographer, Jost Vacano, has a pretty impressive resume from Das Boot to Total Recall and of course everyone's favorite movie, Showgirls! Also another further aside, this is probably the most bare bones blu-ray release I've seen. It's got play movie and chapter select, one menu, no chapters. But it looks like a good restoration so there's that.

In any case 52 Pick-Up (Still not sure why this i the film title) is some late '80s cheese and a solid movie.

Kill It: 8/10

Kim Soo-hyun was a boy that from a young age was trained to be an assassin in the forest of Vladivostok. His mentor later regrets the life he had given to Soo-Hyun and asks him to give up the assassin life. So he later goes on to live a double life as sorts, continuing to be an assassin but also a veterinarian for cover. However, he's only an assassin because one of his clients promises to reveal the truth about his life as he takes out the targets. The conspiracy unravels more and more and the atrocities of the people behind the mystery begin to come to life. It's about time one of these shows exposed the elite CEOs as evil (and in this show probably as bad as it gets).

It also has Nana from After School in it (So you know @thewhyteboar is down) and I think she has made a successful transition from pop star to actor. The show is pretty compelling and well written. It appears to be the first show written by two female writers, to write such a compelling show is impressive. It's also only 12 episodes so it doesn't wear out it's welcome. In any case a pretty cool show, I thought if Hitman was ever a successful franchise it could be like this sorta (although the main character is maybe a notch above Agent 47 in terms of emotion. :p )

Ink: 6/10

Ink is an indie or step above indie movie (a $250k budget according to Wikipedia) and it shows. The whole picture has that sort of ugly bloom to mask the fact it's low budget. However, it works for this movie since it's about dreams sort of. When we go to sleep there are different people who visit us that we can't see because they exist on a different plane of reality. Storytellers touch you when you sleep and you have good dreams while succubi touch you and you have a nightmare. But drifters touch you, well, steal you and you go into a coma. So in this movie a drifter steals a girl and she's in a coma and only a visit from her dad in the hospital can bring her out of it. However, he's so overcome with grief, rage, betrayal and the addiction of capitalism to be bothered to visit his daughter in the hospital so the movie tells the story of how the storytellers can somehow get the father to visit his comatose daughter.

Like I said it's fairly low budget but feels higher budget than an indie. It's got some interesting effects, costumes and sets. It's acted fairly well and the story is a unique idea even though it kind of feels like something you'd think of for a college project or something. Overall not bad.

INJUSTICE 3.25/5

one of the better DC DTV showings with some pretty damn gruesome deaths and surprise deaths (for someone who didn’t read the comic or play the game yet) I don’t think Hartley really had the Superman voice and felt off, except when he gets really pissed. Plus the character designs overall just looked too stocky looking for me. Still the movie was a fun and adventurous romp

Prison School: 9/10

I wasn't really expecting much from this anime besides some titillation but it turned out to be a lot better than that. Five boys enroll at a school that was previously an all girl's school and since men are disgusting pigs they get in trouble for trying to peep on girls. So the school has an on campus prison and they are to serve time for their misdeeds. The thing is they are kind of pathetic virgins so they are kind of into the punishment but there are grander plans for some of the other characters and also a plot by the Underground Student Council to make sure no boys will ever be at the school again.

The show is actually very funny. The humor a bit low brow but the jokes are fresh so it's fun. The anime only covers the first 9 books (I believe) of the Manga and the art style appears to adhere very closely to the books. On top of that the show has an interesting color / shading style than you see from other anime, like maybe the fact there is shading at all makes it really interesting to watch. (See screenshot below)

Lastly I only briefly listened to the English dub but I wasn't too into it. I feel like the voices match up with the characters better in the Japanese language. Like Meiko has a bit husky voice to match her kind of dominating style but sounds kinda like a whiny chick in English. Andre sounds kind of like an innocent type of guy in Japanese but sounds like some gross slug in English including some kind of slimy lisp that was kind of off putting. So yeah watch it in Japanese.

Uncharted - 4/10

AAAAIRPLANE MOVIE @Keyser_Soze

Tom Holland is as charismatic as ever, but... that's about it. The story is bland, the villains are shitty and undeveloped, the plot is shitty and undeveloped, what even is Mark Wahlberg's character? It's all stupid.

Still, i kind of wouldn't mind seeing another one.

Has anyone here seen The Outsider, the show based on the King book? Curious if that's any good, need something new to watch.

It's very good. It's a limited series that has gone back and forth on whether there will be a season 2 but it's great, definitely watch it.

Don't Look Now: 7/10

I would describe this movie as an ordinary movie where strange things happen. It's a Nicolas Roeg joint (The Man Who Fell to Earth) starring Donald Sutherland as John Baxter. He's an art restorer and after a tragedy involving his daughter he and his wife go to Venice to help restore some artwork in a church. His wife gets involved with these two women, one who is a psychic and her premonitions begin coming true but John doesn't want to believe. In any case he does end up believing and becomes very paranoid. On paper it's a pretty ordinary story but like I said surrounded by strange occurrences and characters. It has also got an interesting visual storytelling style that is really unconventional. The shots linger for maybe more than you would expect or cut in such a way that is a bit strange. But the way it's shot and direction are probably more of the star of the movie than anything else.

Interceptor, starring Chris Hemsworth's wife.  One of those Netflix Originals, so it's about what you'd expect.

If this were the 90's, this would have probably starred Cynthia Rothrock.

Cynthia Rothrock was one of my favorite action/martial arts stars of the 90s, so if this is like one of her movies then I have to watch it. :p

LOL.  Would have been a better film with her in it.  Fight scenes and choreography were lacking.

This is one I really like. I love those 70s family drama horrors and this movie is often very unsettling and heavy feeling.

GODZILLA VS KONG (3D) 3/5

Sort of suffers a little bit of what kept KotM from being good, too much human story. I liked the stuff between Kong and the little girl, but we didn’t really need Eleven back for her side of the story. Just give me more like the Hong Kong battle and we’re in business. First movie on my projector with big sound in almost a year. How I have missed it and my 3D movies. No real pop out effects to speak of but the depth and the display of their size on screen is undeniably cool. Worth a viewing in 3D, just wish it had the included Atmos track like the other Blu-Ray/UHD discs got. The DTS-HDMA was still pretty great with Neural X applied to get some overhead sound going as well. Going to hopefully follow this up with No Way Home tonight.

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (4K/Atmos) 3.5/5

I think this might of been the weakest of the 3 in the series too me. This is also the first time I haven’t seen this first in a 3D theatre. Hell, we almost weren’t going to get a 3D disc but thankfully a Region #2 release was announced in Australia which I shall import. What was great about the last one was that 3D element with Mysterio and added more enjoyment to my viewing. Hoping the same for this upcoming 3D release in a few months. Disc looks great in 4K, sound was pretty encompassing but something just seem to be missing for me. Maybe I had to be in a better mood as I’m prepping for a doctors appointment tomorrow with a Doc. Oc. arm myself. Will report back if my opinion changes on my 3D viewing, well I’ll give the disc a review

Seeing the new Cronenberg flick tonight, wish me luck.

Full of interesting ideas but unfortunately felt like the movie simply moved from tedious exposition dump to the next tedious exposition dump without any flow nor excitement. Some cool visuals and well, ideas, but it was surprisingly...boring.

I just finished watching the second season of Stranger Things, and while it wasn’t quite as good as the first season it was still good. Now onto season three.

First 2 seasons are great. Season 3 is a bit different in vibe and some people think it's the weakest season. Personally, I really enjoyed it.
