just finished the first episode of Reacher, definitely a more accurate representation of Reacher and thrilled to see the entire first season is based around a single book

Fastest reboot ever?

(EDIT: It seems I got this confused with the John Krasinski Jack Ryan show. Was wondering why they would reboot it and make him a beefcake)

Murderville - 3/5 - if there is a second season, please steer away from actors. I thought Lynch was the best episode.

Cars - 1/5 - watched this with my daughter. You know it isn’t good when she can’t sit through the movie and wants to put Cocomelon on instead.

Monsters Inc - 4/5 - daughter loved every minute of it even though she got scared quite a few times.

The Edge of War - 7/10

I agree with what I read on RT that it's really hard to do a historical politcal thriller when you know what the ending is, but they somehow manage to pull it off.  The pacing is on point - which is the problem I have with most political thrillers, they either drag scenes out for too long, breaking the tension, or they move too fast, which doesn't let any tension build up in the first place. The Edge of War strikes that balance really well.

My only complaint is that it's not really doing anything or saying anything that hasn't already been done a bunch before. But as it is, it's a really well done political thriller.

The Water Man: 6/10 - This felt like a fairly hollow movie that left very little impact. Directed and starring David Oyelowo with other big stars like Rosario Dawson and Alfred Molina it tells the tale of an imaginative young boy (Gunner) who's mother is dying of leukemia. Gunner is a talented artist, making his own "graphic novel" and fairly book smart as well, reading a handful of books at a time at ease for his "research." - However, he seems fairly naive as he hears a tale from some girl about  seeing a guy called the water man. This belief is reinforced by the fact some other guy said he knew where the water man was (though not having met him). The water man is a person who had believed survive a flood because of a stone that could bring him back to life. So the Gunner thought if he could find the water man that he could cure his mom's disease.

Despite the weight of the subject matter, children running away, a dying mother, a forest fire, the movie feels fairly drama free. In the end the boy learns about life, something his parents could have taught him and the family adopts a white girl after living in the town for less than a week and they all find Jesus, the end. Huh? I saw this being floated as maybe a kid's movie but as a kid's movie it feels pretty ordinary. I didn't know what to expect going in but did not come away feeling impressed. It just feels fairly safe and average.

Yellowjackets

This might the show I disagree with the critics the most on. I just didn't like it, the supernatural plot that lurks mostly in the background of most of the show is a major detriment to the series, should have just kept it a survival story. Acting is fine to good, wasn't a fan of some of the directing though.

4/10

Vox Machina

I was worried this might happen but I think Arcane has ruined animated series for me, having 6 years to make a season of television and an immense budget will kind of do that. Vox is fine for the most part although it ends in a weird place, not even like a cliff hanger just an end of an episode.

That might be because it isn’t over yet. The last episodes drop on Feb 18th. Seem to be dropping 3 episodes weekly. Plus it looks like it was already given a 2nd season.

that makes sense, I was reading online that there were only 9 episodes, guess they were referring to how many were released.

Requiem For A Dream 10/10

I'm really biased but because it's one of those movies that had a massive impact on me. I saw it in the theater when it came out and it hit like a ton of bricks, I was the right age. Still not sure why I rewatch it once in a while because it never loses its potency. One of my favorite scenes is Tyrone getting carried away thinking he's Mr. Badass Drug Dealer and then reality hits in the limo. Ellen Burstyn's monolog also gets me like nothing else, she's absolutely incredible in this.

I don't even think I could stomach this again. Definitely extremely impactful! I watched it at the right age, too.

Strong Girl (Woman) Do Bong Soon: 8/10

Got super hero fatigue or maybe like super hero movies? Well this is the closest you can get without actually being one. It's about a woman Do Bong Soon who was born with super strength. In fact the strength is hereditarily passed down from generation but only to the women. The one caveat is the strength must be used for good, if it is abused or used in a bad way then the powers are lost (like Bong Soon's mother). The show is kind of front loaded plot-wise. It begins with Bong Soon helping out a bus driver who was being abused by gangsters. A CEO, Min Hyuk, from a video game company called AINsoft arrives at the scene with the intent to help her but it's obvious she can take care of herself so he helps her out by covering up the fact she beat up the gangsters (Bong Soon wants to keep her powers a secret). So a story thread branches off of this. The gangsters vow revenge on Bong Soon. The second thread is that the CEO is being threatened by a stalker so he hires Bong Soon as her bodyguard. Then there is a THIRD story thread, which kind of is an overarching thread about some dude who's kidnapping women in her home town, and Bong Soon vows to catch this man. Finally on top of all of this Bong Soon has had a life long crush on Guk Doo but he doesn't realize it meanwhile the CEO is developing feelings for her but can he snatch her feelings away from Guk Doo? You'll have to watch and find out.

Now you might ask @Keyser_Soze how can you recommend a show that has the worst of both worlds as a love interest? Guk Doo is a police officer and Min Hyuk is a CEO. Well, unlike the previous show I watched where the CEO was kind of a creep, he's kind of likable in this one, plus he doesn't trust the police either so I guess he'll score some points there. In any case I thought it was a fun and clever show. It's quite the journey and I think the characters are what make the show so enjoyable. There is a lot of growth for not only the main characters but even secondary characters such as the gangsters and such. In fact (Spoilers but none of you care) there is a guy who plays a dual role, it's kind of a surprise for later but they are two completely different types of characters and personalities so I was actually quite impressed. Also, a shout out to the people who did the subtitles because there are a lot of subtleties pointed out (A lot of jokes regarding honorifics, dialects and even broken Korean) that perhaps someone like @skillzdadirecta would appreciate. I give the show high marks overall but I felt like maybe it was a bit front loaded. I got to episode 9 and thought it was near the end, they had wrapped up a lot of threads except one but then there were like 7 more after. So it kinda feels like they were treading water till the end. It's not that bad as there were still some things that went on but the end isn't as strong as the  beginning.

Now for a PSA

I generally don't end summaries like this but I noticed that they added Her Private Life to Netflix, a show I watched a while ago and held in very high regard but I KNOW none of you watched it. So now you have no excuse, you should watch it.

Yeah, that new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie dropped today.

3/10

The final 1/3 of that movie was so bad and unintentionally hilarious. Bringing back Sally was certainly a decision, likely just to capitalize off the Halloween reboot. This certainly dampers my hope of a returning Amy Steel (1st living survivor and best final Friday girl) for the 13th Friday the 13th movie.

Still, it's a horror movie and if you're a fan of the genre like me, you can still have some fun with it.

Kimi- This is the third movie Steven Soderbergh has released on HBO Max in like 15 months, which is a little wild to think about. It’s a fun little thriller, kind of a modern tech-based Rear Window starring Zoë Kravitz. I can’t exactly call it quirky, but it has some quirks. If that sounds interesting, don’t watch the trailer. I think it gives away way too much.

Color Out of Space: 8/10

These days Nic Cage makes three types of movies: Good, bad, and weird. This movie happens to fall into the weird category. Now I was surprised to see this was based on a H.P. Lovecraft story for a story written in 1927 the ideas seem to be ahead of it's time. The story is a lot like the movie Annihilation except if that movie was good. Something falls from the sky, takes over the ecosystem except in this movie Nic Cage's family is basically at ground zero. It's a visual spectacle and some great creature effects (and even CG effects as well). A pretty cool cast including a surprisingly good performance from Tommy Chong of all people. In any case, a pretty cool trip.

Dude I just came here to trash this piece of shit. I have no idea why I even watched it for an entire hour before turning it off. Or why I clicked on it.

It's as vapid, idiotic, paperthin and cheap looking as possible. A dumb-as-fuck gorefest with aggressively irritating stereotypical and hyper-trope-y characters and a plot akin to later Friday 13th flicks.

The Sally thing was a PAINFULLY obvious Halloween reboot ripoff as icing on the cake. I can't even rate this. I hate that it even exists and manages to shit on the legacy of the original even further which was almost impossible at this stage.

Fuck This Cashgrab/10

Edit: I just skipped through the last 20 minutes or so because of your comment on the ending and wow. I'm truly stunned that this movie somehow managed to top itself. That ending, just...wow. I can't believe this is marketed as a 'sequel' to the original film.

Absolutely loved this movie.  Love when Nic Cage takes little moments in his weird movies/roles to remind everyone that he’s still an amazing actor when he feels like it.

Bad Trip - 7/10

I'm talking about the Eric Andre flick. It's not that I thought the movie itself was that great but I don't know, something about it was just really fun and it was...shockingly positive? It actually felt fresh exactly because it was surprisingly positive. There's something about the hidden camera format that just works for me almost no matter what so yeah.

Tiffany Haddish is fucking funny in this.

Only Murders in the Building

Came out of no where for me, liked it a lot. The fact that Steve Martin can still do physical comedy in his mid 70s is impressive.

8.5/10

Reacher

Overall it was dumb fun entertainment but Reacher is most Mary Sue character I have come across in years.

7/10
