The Killer

Can you complain about an action movie having too many action movie clichés when it invented a lot of them? Over the top action with just waves of badguys running in to get gun downed in stylistic fashion.

As crazy as The Killer is Hard Boiled is even MORE over the top. I remember seeing the Killer for the first time and it blew my mind away.

Bone Tomahawk

Been meaning to watch this for awhile and checked it out last night on Prime. Not bad.. fun little "men on a mission" throw back western with some horror elements. A little problematic from a cultural standpoint in its depiction of the "Savages" as borderline inhuman "others" but nevertheless enjoyable with some really gruesome kills.

Brawl At Cell Block 99

If you can ignore the obvious if not problematic racial undertones, this wasn't a bad exploitation/prison flick. Vince Vaugn does pretty well as the bad ass anti hero who fucks everything up in sight. The violence gets anime silly at times, but I stuck with the flick. The movie is a Fox News bro's wet dream though.

Blue Ruin

Pretty entertaining indie flick with an interesting take on the revenge movie.  An unlikely protagonist gets revenge for his parents' deaths and discovers that when you go seeking vengeance, you'd best dig two graves. Or in this case, several. I miss movies like this.

I'll vouch for this, Hard Boiled is like an Action gunplay orgasm. I saw it last maybe 10 years ago but used to watch it regularly and it's totally out of control.

I Think You Should Leave (Netflix) - 6.5/10

Several of my friends recommend this to me for new comedy and it's wildly hit or miss for me. I love absurd humor, grew up on Monty Python etc., but it often gets in its own way as far as I'm concerned. As in, its absurdity sometimes feels really stilted to me, like they really didn't have an idea here or there and just went with the most absolutely random idea possible.

When it does work, it can be really funny but the ratio was kind of 50/50 for me.

The baby contest skit was great though with the audience verbally assaulting the 'bad boy' baby, ah shit.

John Carpenters Prince Of Darkness

The film is the 2nd part of Carpenters "Apocalypse Trilogy ".One of my top 10 horror films. It has it all, great soundtrack, sweet mustaches, Donald Pleasence as a priest,Egg Shen as a new age college professor, green slime in jar, and Alice Cooper as deranged homeless guy.

I had to import this as Studio Canal didnt release it in the states.

Image- The 4k bump is nice adding those great subtle details , special effects and make up look fantastic with HDR adding nice reds and greens.

Sound- Front heavy DTSHD 5.1 is good and the soundtrack is on point.

Chernobyl - 10/10 - probably the best miniseries I’ve ever seen. Just incredibly well done.

When They See Us - 9/10 - first couple episodes really got my emotions going, the third episode didn’t quite hold up to the rest of the series, and that last episode made me tear up. The actor who played Korey Williams did a fantastic job. Highly recommended.

Basically two two very powerful miniseries released around the same time. Really weighed heavy on my emotions.

Dead To Me - 7/10

Recommended to me by several people as a kind of must-watch. I thought it was pretty much carried by Christina Applegate's great performance and veered into some territory that frankly increasingly annoyed me. The season 1 ending, and the last few episodes in general, felt increasingly tonally weird and sillier by the minute to me as well.

Definitely didn't think it was bad and rather entertaining overall but it felt like it floundered a lot. Christina Applegate was really good, funny and exciting to watch though.

What We Do in the Shadows(tv) - 11/10

Simply amazing. Surpasses the movie in every way. I really can’t speak enough to the performances and the chemistry between the 3 vampires and Guillermo.  It’s not just the writing the gets me but all the little sideways glances and manurisms of the characters ended up making me laugh the most. Amazing show.

Billions season 4

The show has entered caricature  status this year. It has always been a little silly and that was one of the things that made it so entertaining but they are just getting over the top now. Characters are distilled into their most prominent traits, all plot issues are resolved by two powerful people having a one scene conversation where they either trade favors or bully the other person into doing their bidding. Money has no meaning anymore, one episode they celebrate bringing in half a billion in new investor money like it is a huge deal and they next they buy the Chrysler building before lunch to squeeze someone. It is still fun and actors revel in it but it is pretty dumb now.

Barry

Three episodes in and I'm surprisingly indifferent. I keep thinking how I'd rather re-watch Grosse Pointe Blank. I like Bill Hader but I'm not really sure I get the hype here. Also, that bald Chechen guy's bad fake Russian accent and the "lol he says funny meme stuff" shtick is cringeworthy.

Some moments are definitely good and enjoyable, don't get me wrong, just a few of my friends really hyped this show to me.

Stoker 4/5

Euphoria S1E1 - 2.5/5

gonna need a few episodes to really see if I like this or not. But I think the pilot doesn’t really tell you what the story is besides teenagers dealing with important issues. This is the same guy that wrote and directed Assassination Nation so I’m not expecting too much.

The Society Season 1 (Netflix) - First, this is a standard Teen Drama in a lot of ways. It's one of those where every teen has their relationships and secrets and Real Drama, and every actor is clearly in their mid-20's. The twist here is that in some mysterious way, a couple school buses full of high school kids end up with their whole small New England town to themselves, cut off from the rest of the world. So all those petty squabbles between dumb teenagers can escalate really quickly and have serious repercussions as they try to form their new, uh, society. I don't know if I can call this a great, or even particularly good show, but it has its moments. I definitely enjoy it, and I think later seasons have a lot of potential.
