This is probably the most inexplicable movie I've ever seen. The cinematography, direction, and what I would broadly call the tone of the movie is creeping dread and cosmic horror complete with murky night skies, long silences, reverb, and brilliant double exposures, but the actual plot content seems like something ripped from Slayer lyrics. The movie constantly subverts and undermines its beauty with sequences where it appears to turn and smile at the camera, a la Blue Velvet, and much of it strains already strained credulity. It seemed to be in constant conflict with itself, but somehow instead of becoming a schizoid mess, it ultimately coheres in a way that doesn't really make sense to me.

Natasha Lyonne carried the show. It was competent as hell, and I'm always down for more Groundhog Day, but like my high-school essays, it never went above and beyond and went somewhere truly new.

Coincidentally, I've been on a King Crimson binge lately. 

 

Have not seen Mandy though. I've been writing it off as full blown silly hipster-ism to be honest but maybe it's time to give it a shot.

If by hipsterism you mean people ironically liking Nicholas Cage movies thinking it's an interesting personality trait, I'm with you, but I think Mandy was good despite Cage's distracting history.

It was pretty cool when it came out. It's still fun and insane, and I think that's why I enjoy it. But in no way is it an objectively good movie. But it has its charms.

Yeah, Gregory Hines.

 

Basically:

  • Advanced android that looks like the scientist who designed her and is programmed with some of her memories. 
  • She gets loose
  • She leaves a trail of death and destruction in her wake.
  • She has no off switch.
  • She has to be stopped.

Kinda cool premise, but not executed all that well; a modern version in better hands could be cool.

I really didn't like Beyond The Black Rainbow. I thought it was visually beautiful but ultimately struck me as an empty and shallow exercise in style...which can transcend into something greater in itself but it just didn't work for me here.

 

That paired with Cage's ironic presence (I mean who hires that clown in a serious film at this point?) really turned me off. That being said, I am willing to give it a chance and think it's on Netflix? I'll give it 45 minutes to prove its case.

My wife, who couldn't stand Beyond the Black Rainbow, actually enjoyed Mandy if that's worth anything. Also Cage is a fantastic actor, he's just had major tax issues for a decade now and has taken on many shitty projects to pay for it.

The few times I've truly liked Cage would be in Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas that I can recall. Outside of those, and others I may not remember, he's more fun to laugh at than with. I appreciate him being a rowdy weirdo in real life the most actually, at least he's got that going for him.

Half of that list is some of the worst shit the 90's had to offer!!!! Oh yeah, Adaptation was great.

 

Speaking of bad 90's...I just saw Last Boy Scout on TV, what a train wreck that was. Highly entertaining though.

All I remember it as was like Armageddon level one-liner drivel but then again I haven't seen it in probably 20 years. I'm not a fan of 90's big Hollywood type flicks though in general so I'm biased. 

 

PS: I'm almost excited to hate Mandy now just so I can come back here and shit on it.

Thanks man.  What a good and different film.  Was totally not in the mood for something like this but once I hit play I was captivated.  Such a good performance.  Look forward to Jim cumming’s next project

Dragged Across Concrete

 

This is the most deliberately paced movie I have ever seen. 2 hour 38 minute run time that would have probably been at or under 2 hours with a different director/writer with the same plot. At one point they spend several minutes introducing a character, giving you a complete understanding of their backstory and motivations just for the sole purpose of killing them off. It is not boring and doesn't drag like I said it just very deliberate plot and dialogue occasionally punctuate by horrific violence. This is from the same guy that did Bone Tomahawk so that should give you a hint about how brutal it is going to get.

AQUAMAN 3D 3/5

 

A little long for the movie, but an ok popcorn flick overall. Mamoa was his usual awesome self but kind of wish he wasn’t played to look so oafish in ways. I overall loved the brutality given to Black Manta and loved the costume too. I also gotta say the DTS-HDMA track with the 3D presentation was amazing with the added Neural X applied on top. Although I wonder how much better the Atmos track would of been with the presentation which the blu-ray and UHD discs get. Speaking of presentation, this is one stunning looking 3D disc. You get a few little pop outs here and there, but the overall depth/separation of objects was amazing. Now another thing I wish they did was follow Disney’s lead and include the expanded IMAX ratio for the 3D disc. The blu-ray and UHD disc got it, but 3D gets the shaft.

Endgame

 

The middle section is a slog and I really didn't like Banner Hulk, the humor didn't stick as well as other MCU movies for some reason. Final battle is great but I have some significant issues with their goals and accomplishments I will talk about in the main thread.

S. Craig Zahler is definitely a writer/director to watch - both Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99 were fantastic movies so I look forward to this one.

I really liked Bone Tomahawk but haven't seen Brawl... nor Dragged... yet. The titles are so bargain bin that I find them thoroughly attractive again so I've been morbidly curious.

 

I didn't realize it was the same guy that did Bone Tomahawk. I need to get back into my movie nerd modus operandi, I'm slacking. I didn't even know Quentin Tarantino had a new movie in the works until yesterday :blart:

While everyone is seeing Endgame this weekend. I went ahead and watched Xanadu. I was surprised to see this was critically panned because it's a very straightforward movie, simple story and fun songs and dance numbers. Also contains surprise animation. :p

 

Ive watched it a couple of times... Its was odd to see Michael Beck of the Warriors in this....surprised he didnt move on to bigger and better things, maybe this sunk him.

 

The signature musical  performance at the end is still real good.
