The larger a house of elected officials, the less control the leadership has over it. House members want those sweet committee positions and similar responsibilities, and they will only get them if they tow the party line. That is actually another great reason to massively expand the size of democratic lower houses in western nations, as it leads to power being moved closer to voters.
