The Kavanaugh Confirmation Charade Thread

Background investigations and criminal investigations aren’t the same thing. The FBI was always hamstrung by this just being a background investigation. But Flake and Collins got the cover they needed.

Background investigations do not normally have such tight proscriptions placed on them.

I didn't have high hopes for this whole process to begin with, but what depresses me here in the big picture may be how the GOP men are tipping their hand of how they will be moving foward. They aren't going to be magnanimous, let alone remorseful. They are going to be gloating, dismissive, and likely more and more pushing an all out narrative of Ford being Nutty and Slutty going forward.

What are the odds that he could be removed if, after his confirmation, further evidence comes to light? And is that about the best we can hope for at this point?

He would either have to resign voluntarily, or the Senate would have to remove him, which requires 66 votes.

Sure, but they still aren’t one in the same and we never would get what people are wanting out of the call for an investigation.

Outside of irrefutable proof of these claims, the odds are exactly zero. Which makes the odds exactly zero.

Even with irrefutable evidence, I don't think you would get enough Republican support if Dems control the Senate and/or White House.

They would probably play the same game Trump does now. His accusers were known during the election, so the very fact that he won is a stamp of legitimacy.

He could be on video saying "I'm Brett kavanaugh and I approve this rape" then actually rape a girl and they'd still go to bat for him.

The only thing that would disqualify him for Republicans would be if he voted for Hillary and not sarcastically.

Redsoxfan is all about that edge

Seriously, if it weren't for the fact that many Republican appointed judges become more liberal with time, this country would be even more of a shithole than it currently is.

Man, you guys make it sound as if increasing the size of the Supreme Court doesn't totally require control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency or anything like that at all!

Democrats will eventually regain both although they are dopes and will just shrug their shoulders as SCOTUS destroys everything.

If Democrats ever achieve a 5-4 majority, Republicans wouldn't hesitate to pack the court at the first opportunity.

Honestly I am in favour of stacking the court now simply to delegitimatize it altogether and force a constitutional solution.

Why would you think a “constitutional solution “ would be preferable to the status quo? That sounds like furthering our progress towards a full on banana republic. You don’t have to force a constitutional issue by appointing another two justices. If memory serves me, it would be perfectly fine.

On another note, the lifetime appointment to the court is supposed to serve as insulation to political winds, but we all know that the court is very political and continues to get worse every year. This latest nomination has been a circus.

I’m actually kind of curious what you all think is going to happen when you say they will “destroy everything”.

liberals LOL

The Supreme Court is filled with unelected elites who have lifetime appointments.  They make political decisions for 325M people, and there is no accountability.

No shit, the lifetime appointment needs to go (at minimum) but delegitimizing the courts just takes us one step closer to a right wing authoritarian autocracy (which is what the right wants, no qualms about it) where the executive just ignores the judiciary.

The Supreme Court consistently rules for conservatives and would not stop any right wing power grab.

I'm talking about should there ever be a liberal majority (in like 40 years or so) delegitimizing the courts gives justification to ignore their ruling entirely.

“Pack the court” is the sort of thing that is only appropriate to say if you’re currently taking high school government class and the teacher brings it up in regards to FDR and it blows your mind. If you’re older than 17 you should feel bad about yourself for suggesting it.

high schoolers probably understand politics better than liberal adults

is it better for liberals to shrug their shoulders and do nothing every time SCOTUS rules against them?
