What's up with this coin shortage?

Recommended Posts

Isn't this a Facebook conspiracy among boomers? I mean, not the shortage (which seems to be mundanely explained by less people working at the mint, and related coin-sorting/distribution operations), but the reasons why? I've seen one theory being that the government wants everyone to move to contactless cards for tracking, etc.

Spoiler alert: Everyone in Canada has used contactless "tap" payment for years as the standard method (and chip and pin for a decade before that) and it's fantastic. I haven't used cash in probably 2 or 3 years.

I for one would prefer a contactless "tap" payment as long as it didn't have fees.

One of the Facebook memes I saw on it had a bit about how moving away from cash will allow the government to track our every move.

So I had to butt in, cause this joker posted it to Facebook using an Android device, like Google and Facebook aren't hand in hand with the government tracking your every move.

I've seen two variants, both of which I suspect originated from fake personas (Russian?) just to incite the right.

HERES WHAT NO CASH ACTUALLY MEANS

A cashless society means no cash. Zero. It doesn’t mean mostly cashless and you can still use a ‘wee bit of cash here & there’. Cashless means fully digital, fully traceable, fully controlled. I think those who support a cashless society aren’t fully aware of what they are asking for. A cashless society means:

* If you are struggling with your mortgage on a particular month, you can’t do an odd job to get you through.

* Your child can’t go & help the local farmer to earn a bit of summer cash.

* No more cash slipped into the hands of a child as a good luck charm or from their grandparent when going on holidays.

* No more money in birthday cards.

* No more piggy banks for your child to collect pocket money & to learn about the value of earning.

* No more cash for a rainy day fund or for that something special you have been putting £20 a week away for.

* No more nixers on the side because your wages barely cover the bills or put food on the table.

* No more charity collections.

* No more selling bits & pieces from your home that you no longer want/need for a bit of cash in return.

* No more cash gifts from relatives or loved ones.

What a cashless society does guarantee:

* Banks have full control of every single penny you own.

* Every transaction you make is recorded.

* All your movements & actions are traceable.

* Access to your money can be blocked at the click of a button when/if banks need ‘clarification’ from you which will take about 3 weeks, a thousand questions answered & five thousand passwords.

* You will have no choice but to declare & be taxed on every pound in your possession.

* The government WILL decide what you can & cannot purchase.

* If your transactions are deemed in any way questionable, by those who create the questions, your money will be frozen, ‘for your own good’.

I could write lists for 5 days & still not finish explaining how utterly awful a cashless society would be, for everyone. Even for the goody two shoes who wouldn’t dream of not declaring £500.
Forget about cash being dirty. Stop being so easily led. Cash has been around for a very, very, very long time & it gives you control over how you trade with the world. It gives you independence. I heard a story where a man supposedly contracted Covid because of a £20 note he had handled. There is the same chance of Covid being on a card as being on cash. If you cannot see how utterly ridiculous this assumption is then there is little hope.

If you are a customer, pay with cash. If you are a shop owner, remove those ridiculous signs that ask people to pay by card. Cash is a legal tender, it is our right to pay with cash. Banks are making it increasingly difficult to lodge cash & that has nothing to do with a virus, nor has this ‘dirty money’ trend.

Please open your eyes. Please stop believing everything you are being told. Almost every single topic in today’s world is tainted with corruption & hidden agendas. Please stop telling me & others like me that we are what’s wrong with the world when you hail the most corrupt members of society as your heroes. Politics & greed is what is wrong with the world; not those who are trying to alert you to the reality in which you are blindly floating along whilst being immobilised by irrational fear. Fear created to keep you doing & believing in exactly what you are complacently doing.

Pay with cash & please say no to a cashless society while you still have the choice.

This information from Dave Ramsey is important. Food for thought

Copied & pasted!

I tried to see if Dave Ramsey actually shared the "loss of freedom" sentiments and didn't find a real source.  So no doubt someone probably just threw a known businessman's name onto the meme to make it appear credible.

I remember my old agriculture science teacher less than 20 years ago saying he hoped we went to a cashless system because it would stop drug and terrorist money from flowing. This was after 9/11 even. Man times have changed. There's 0 doubt in my mind he'd be sharing these memes as another teacher from my high school, who he was close with, has shared one of these things above.

I'd say some of that was even accelerated more due to COVID with stores putting an emphasis on only paying by card.

Here in canada for the most part there isn't one (I know a few small stores will still try with credit cards). That is partly helped by the fact we have intrac which is a non-profit and most bank cards have interac tap integrated in them.

And yet you can still do all of the things the meme says you can't (with Paypal, Venmo, etc), except of course the exchange can be tracked and potentially taxed.  But... you are "supposed to" pay tax on cash transactions, and a legally-abiding citizen shouldn't give a shit about their money being tracked.

No fee here. Except the reason is that our national debit network is run by Interac, a non-profit consortium of the major banks. That's why we've had debit cards as our standard for 20+ years.  Even the credit card companies piggyback on it.

I swear to god if this turns into another Canadian thread of good governance imma be pissed

Good news - in this case, it's simply the non-American thread of good banking since many developed countries use similar systems!

All my businesses have tap to pay terminals. It’s pretty ubiquitous in America now, a lot of terminals just don’t have it clearly labeled and people aren’t used to it. I think all my debit cards have tap functionality now.

Guy i worked with linked cashless payments to some bible prophecy where only people with a mark would be allowed to buy things, this is usually when i just laugh at him and walk away, I'm pretty sure hes held this belief for a while.  He also told me once that they sell CRISPR gene editing kits so you can edit your genes at home, Boomer brain is a real neurological disorder.

i remember reading ten years or so ago that the amount of metal a nickel is worth more than an actual nickel and certain interests were rounding up all of the nickels and other coins (Copper in pennies is valuable too) in order to melt them. down. Pennies are 97.5% zinc, melting a penny is worth less than the penny.

Apparently theres actually a website for this, with live value updates, lol.  Older stuff can be pretty valuable.

There's some weird-ass church in Korea that believes this. You always seem them in downtown Seoul with these giant signs that say stuff like "Verichip = 666" and that you won't be able to get into heaven cause you'll have a chip inside you. Sometimes it's comforting to know that kooky Christians aren't just an American phenomenon.

Ah, that's what my mom's FB repost was about last night. She's really been going off the deep end lately. I liked it better when most of her posts were of her outdoor excursions.

The real issue is the Mello Yello shortage. I mean, you can get 2ltr bottles, but 2ltrs fucking suck.

It’s because their is an aluminum shortage right now and probably won’t end for some time  if we can’t get Covid under control. When I’m working, merchandising a store. My store is suppose to receive 859 12p cans of product, but lately we are only getting a 1/3rd of these order. Same at every store I work and so we have stopped production/orders on the lesser known/low end selling skus

It costs 2 cents to make 1 penny. Seems like a waste of money. :p

I know, but like, there is 8 million cans of coke and sprite at every fucking store I enter. All I want is one 12p, man. I can get all the fucking mtn dew I want, but I don't do the fucking dew. Unless it is live wire. Hell, they even still carry the shitty lemonade sprite in the cans but not my delicious Mello Yello.
