Delta just won out because it is much more transmissible than some of the others that caused even higher rates of severe illness. And that is a typical trade off for virus variants, transmissibility or severity. The scary thing would be to combine the transmissibility of delta with a strain that causes much more severe illness. That is a fairly unlikely scenario from what I’ve read, but does remain a possibility especially with how vaccination has slowed in developed nations and barely begun in the global south. Many more years of opportunity. The good news for those of us who are team vaccine, the ability of the pharma companies to create new mRNA boosters for future VOCs that won’t need the longer road to market is substantial.
