It'd be a bit much to make patients wear a mask 24/7 in a private room. One of my buddies says where he works patients have to wear them if staff is in the room, but otherwise not. Yea that's how it is at my hospital also, patients are asked to wear a mask when staff enter the room. Staff are also asked to wear a mask at all times (and a face shield if the patient refuses to wear a mask). Visitation was freed up a tiny bit (generally non-covid patients can have visitation if they met certain criteria and end-of-life for COVID patients) a little while ago and visitors are also expected to wear a mask at all times, and will be refused entry/escorted out if they refuse to wear a mask (which is also provided if they don't bring one). On a side note, a few friends and family of mine who are nurses continue to meet with other friends, posting pictures on social media with no one wearing masks. Don't mind the get togethers as much, but I feel as healthcare workers, taking pictures without masks around non-household people minimizes the need for a mask. The whole thing is so disheartening. Knowing it's going to last for a while but actually doing it are two different things. It's exhausting (emotionally and physically) as hell. chakoo
Things are starting to badly spike in canada again, obviously no where near the US but still heading into a 2nd wave. It's been pretty frustrating the Provinces of Ontario & Quebec have been sitting on their hands while things were spiking. Only recently did ontario institute some new rules (alcohol can't be served past 11pm and restaurants & bars must close at midnight) but they're really dragging their feet. -.-

F**k me I'm doomed. Rising outbreak in Toronto. Downtown core had 344 cases out of the 700 total for the province. This is the highest number recorded by the province even compared to the first wave. This is only going to get worse for the next week or two as some restrictions were put in place last week but won't go far enough. The DT Core is densely populated and GTA as a whole is 5.928 Mil so this has a chance of getting out of control.

CitizenVectron
Yeah Ontario and Quebec are teetering on the edge of uncontrolled spread, it's not good. Main reasons why deaths haven't spiked in the second wave so far are: Younger people are the main spreader now (compared to care homes in the first wave), so it will take another few weeks for their cases to spread to older people (as seen in Florida, etc). We know how to treat it better, so people stay in ICU longer but also recover at a higher rate. So the deaths will increase, but not at the same rate as before since more young people are catching it. But young people will still likely experience long-term effects in a scary % of cases. CitizenVectron
I actually managed to have a good talk with my mom about Thanksgiving and Christmas, and she agreed it wouldn't be safe to do anything. It's very sad, but I'd rather see someone over video chat for the next few months than be responsibility/culpable in someone catching the virus. If I lived driving distance from my parents it'd be one thing and I'd be at least considering how to do it safely, but with having to fly I don't see a way to do it safely that doesn't, at bare minimum, involve 1-1.5 weeks of strict quarantine for myself on each end. Plus I'm worried about getting partway through the flight 5 hour flight and then starting to wig out that I'm stuck on the plane for another 2-4 (depending on when I start panicking) hours.

Definitely. I'm lucky in that I'm a 20-minute drive from her place, and that I've been able to visit her outside in her back yard a few times this summer. But her boyfriend has prostate cancer and my wife has MS+Asthma, so I am in no rush to put anyone at risk this fall/winter when we'll need to be indoors. A little funny because back in April I modded up something similar to take with a snorkel mask, some tubing, one of those portable air filters and a USB battery. Just about 30 minutes in Fusion360 and I had some 3d printed adaptors to put it all together to deliver filter air into the mask with another filter on the exhaust. In total I think it was like $40 to make.
