President Trump has privately asked aides about the possibility of purchasing Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Two advisers told the Journal that Trump asked them and other advisers at dinners and in passing conversations whether such a move would be possible, listening intently when they talked about its resources and geopolitical importance.

He also reportedly asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.

Some of his advisers were supportive of the move, the two sources told the Journal, saying it could be a good economic play. Others dismissed it as just a fascination.

As the Journal noted, it is unclear how the U.S. would go about purchasing Greenland, the largest island in the world.

Roughly 56,000 people live on the mostly self-governing island. Foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen.

Probably saw how big it was on a mercator projection and was jealous.

Do it. Make them a state, too. (Along with DC and PR)

I bet the Greenlanders, about half of whom are employed by the government because of subsidies from the Danish government, would love American "fuck you" capitalism

If we built a military base on Greenland it could probably employ a great number of people who live there.  That's kind of how Guam's population makes a living. Without the Air Force and Navy bases on Guam, it would be a "shithole" territory.

At one point after Wold War II, I read that there was a movement on Sicily to get annexed by the United States.  It obviously never really gained popularity.   Other interesting what ifs include Cuba and the Philippines - what if we had never granted them independence and they stayed territories (and eventually became states)?

We have enough bases.and probably have one there anyway, since Denmark is a NATO Ally

We had a kickass underground (under ice really) base there in the 60s.  It was powered and heated with a small portable nuclear reactor.  They had to eventually abandon that base because the ice shifts slowly overtime, collapsing the tunnels.
