Is it a sin for a single man to masturbate?

I feel good about my decision overall. Porn is pretty fucked up and disgusting but I can't argue with the human body. It needs to release semen so I'm just doing maintenance. It is what is.

Sooner or later I hope to get into a relationship but it's a bitch. I signed back up on match.com and so far not so good.

You can do it without porn.

Well after lot's of thinking, reading, and speaking to the correct people, I don't consider masturbation a sin. I don't necessarily think looking at porn is either so I went for it this evening.

Honest question… why even be “religious” if you’re going to be the arbiter of what is and is not a sin? There’s a difference between acknowledging that your faith considers something a sin (as is the case for masturbation in almost every Christian faith) then deciding to do it anyway and you personally deciding that it isn’t. Stroke away, I don’t care, but looking at porn is absolutely coveting thy neighbor’s wife, it’s against the Ten Commandments. If you’re going to ignore those, might as well just start The Chuch of Best to see if you can get tax exempt status while you’re at it.

There's nothing in the Bible that says masturbation is a sin. Also, how is looking at a non married woman in porn against the ten commandments?

You should go on eharmony, MMG got married off that site

Yea, match got me a few dates but nothing great. I never tried eharmony but I already paid for match. Plenty of fish can sneak up on you, too. I had a relationship off that.

Just messing around with you lol. But try not to hold such strong positions on issues you aren’t sure about. That way if you change your mind a little later, you look less silly.

If you’re going to be so literal as to say “that actress isn’t married, ergo cranking it to her is not literally sin,” you’re splitting hairs so fine that the text has no meaning. Deuteronomy is clear on this, it goes into not coveting your neightbor’s property, servants, etc., so it very obviously does not solely and literally mean, “woman who is married and that only.” Corinthians says that whatever you do should be done for the glory of god. You’re not pumping it to give him glory, it’s a sin.

Sounds like you shouldn't be jacking off with all your biblical knowledge.

I’m an atheist / lapsed Catholic so I don’t believe in sin. But if someone is going to be Christian or Catholic, the answer is clear for almost all denominations.

Part of the problem that our dear Best is having here is thinking that the Bible is just a rule book and if you don’t find a prohibition of a specific behavior then it’s necessarily affirmed.

And most of that stems from Christians giving up on Christian ethics for themselves in favor of telling those outside the tribe what rules they were breaking.

One of the things that is endlessly interesting to me is the NT discussion of ethics in regards to Jewish Christians and gentile Christians differing views on eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols. Such a thing was quite clearly outlawed for the Israelites, but had been a totally normal practice for most of these new Christians coming into a faith grounded in Judaism.

And the answer is pretty much “be nice, and try not to cause offense to your fellow believer”. The rule was less important than the heart of the people involved. So the gentile Christians could continue to eat that idol meat, but we’re to avoid doing so in the sight of Jewish Christians who would have a hard time with that as the law was clear and dear to them.

There are similarly admonitions against Jewish Christians for requiring gentile Christians to follow Jewish customs, like circumcision, in order to be accepted into the Christian faith.

That being said, I’m curious what you think about this @best3444

Quote

Matthew 5

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.

Do you think Jesus would exclude watching porn and masturbating to it from his condemnation of lust?

He is absolutely going to define "adultery" in its narrowest, most literal terms as being marital infidelity.

I read that passage actually and it's almost impossible to achieve what he is saying. I was created in a way that makes me biologically need to mate with a female to procreate. There's not a day that goes by that any man doesn't think of lustful thoughts. Especially when I wasn't on medication I would think about sex all day long. It's how we are built.

To answer your question? That stumps me because it's not achievable.

I honestly don't care if I look silly on here or not. Have you read my threads? I'm just more open about my feelings and life then a lot on here.

That is the point of Jesus’ discourse in chapter 5. He holds up the letter of the law and says the standard is even higher, that it matters what your heart desires. He addresses other issues like murder and says to even be angry with another person is to murder them. The conclusion of chapter 5 is Jesus saying you need to be perfect as God is perfect. This is Jesus establishing the standard of righteousness as something only he will achieve, which means regular old humans will need something beyond their own deeds to measure up.

I would disagree with that, unless you think it’s just a rule book. Going back to Mathew 5, Jesus makes it quite clear that humans will fail to measure up to his standard. Following the rules is futile. That’s the whole reason for substitutionary atonement :p
