What should I play next: Witcher 3 vs. Ghost of Tsushima

The days are getting shorter, the weather worse and 2020 shittier by the month. I need some time-sink escapism and I thought I should probably plunge into one of these massive AAA open world fests I usually avoid exactly for my usual lack of time.

I never played Witcher 3 due to reading tons of negative comments regarding its combat being janky. After watching some gameplay videos...it looks kind of fun? I definitely like the gory dismemberment, always cool combat feedback. Now if the combat isn't anything to write home about, which seems like a huge part of the game, what makes it so special? Also, how overwhelming is it in regards to map "?" vomit and so on?

I've read a lot about Ghost of Tsushima in the OT already so I know of understand what I'm in for there. How does the busy work and open world overwhelming amount of shit compare to Witcher 3?

And by the way, this is on PS4 Pro as a disclaimer.

Also, feel free to suggest other games of their ilk if you think they're superior.

Ghost of Tsushima, no question.

There is plenty of open world side stuff on Tsushima, but the game does a good job of delineating side stuff from main story stuff. That said, side missions do give you lots of great stuff to help out.

Edit: If you haven't played Death Stranding yet, I also highly recommend it. Easily my favorite game this summer.

Actually, I love DS, it's one of my favorites of this gen.

Witcher 3 is easily one of the best games of the generation. HOWEVER, CD Projekt Red is doing a next gen update for it and is adding (real) HDR and ray-tracing... so, play Tsushima now, Witcher 3 post update.

Yeah if you got 3080, this seems like the right move.

What difficulty setting, if it has any, makes the combat most fun? I like a good challenge.

If you are playing blind thru the game and going for mostly complete , the 2nd hardest is an ok challenge. Death March (hardest) is my preferred difficulty and even then strong builds can over power it.

Also HUD option...I've read a few things about turning this or that off for a better experience.

Its been years since I played it but I think one of the biggest things is to increase the sensitivity of the camera? Someone else can probably confirm this but I remember it playing really sluggish till you change the sensitivity and then it runs way better.

Also don’t play the combat like a hack and slash. Use your potions before each battle, looks for openings. If you play it more like a Souls game I think you’ll enjoy the combat a lot more.

Yes to all of this

Also Geralt has weight when he moves so dont expect to do sudden direction changes, hes more brawler/ballerina then super ninja.

I remember arguing with some of the gaming gurus on this very board about how the gameplay in this game works. All I got was "blah blah blah sluggish controls blah blah"... if you focus on dodging instead of blocking and using all of the powers and abilities the game gives to you it's not hard at. Try to play it like a typical action game and you're gonna have a bad time.

Quen, dodge, dodge, slice, slice, dodge, quen, slice, slice!

but for reals, I always like the whole prepare concoctions and combat immensely.  It was nice to have something different.

@Bloodporne one word of advice on playing TW3. Turn off the “?” On the world map. It will be absolutely overwhelming and completely clutters the map. When I first started my OCD was driving me to complete every ?.  I found that I was just going from one place to the next without really absorbing the world and the beautiful details CDPR added to it. Once I turned off the ? It made discovery and exploring so much more enjoyable and fulfilling.

enjoy dude. You made the right choice. Absolutely one of the top 5 games this gen.
