Update: Epic Games receives $2 billion investment from Sony and LEGO parent company, current valuation at $31.5 billion

Sony invests $250 million in Fortnite maker Epic Games (GamesBeat)

Quote

Under the deal, the investment enables Sony and Epic to broaden their collaboration, with Sony’s portfolio of entertainment assets and technology and Epic’s social entertainment platform and digital ecosystem (think Fortnite’s increasing use as a social space or the Epic Games Store), to create unique experiences for consumers and creators. The closing of the investment is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Epic confirmed it will still be able to publish to other platforms. As noted, Sony is acquiring only a minority part of Epic Games, and it is not acquiring a controlling stake in the company.

Whelp, there you go. I guess future Sony 1st parties will be coming to the Epic store first!

One can only dream of a day when Sony 1st party games make it to PC reliably.

I suspect this is the first step to assuring it. I would honestly be surprised if Sony had not made more regular inroads on PC by the end of this generation.

Hard to know what this means.

- Sony's already got several in house engines that they'll keep building on and using, so it's unlikely the UE5 stuff is what prompted this.
- EGS could be a huge boon for their profits if their PC storefront gains more popularity.  Everyone else has a launcher, so it kind of makes sense to latch onto one instead of building their own.  But so far Sony hasn't tried the timed exclusivity thing there like everyone else has.

- As for the dedicated multimedia events ... Playstation Home coming back?  Who even knows.

It could also just be that they see Epic going on the up and up and want a share of that.

Epic Games has received a further $2 billion investment, split between Sony and LEGO owner KIRKBI. Both companies have invested $1 billion each. This has now led to Epic Games being valued at $31.5 billion. Both Sony and KIRKBI have pointed to the metaverse as the reason for their investments, as both companies see that space of growth.

Still haven't really used EGS outside of an exclusive beta. Probably won't unless they get the thing I want. Bloodborne PC Edition. That is all it would take to actually buy a game off EGS. 100% tho, Sony is going to do a shitty remake that kills the original art style for basic fidelity and make it exclusive to their shitty console.

So Sony’s answer to MS building a game studio empire is to gobble up all the media rights to yet untapped and popular multi platform franchises to make tv shows and movies.

interesting.

or at least buy enough stake in companies to hold off MS being able to just outright buy the company. Maybe this too.

They're going hard into the Metaverse even though they let Playstation Home die.
