That's very nice of you. There's no reason why we all shouldn't have 20-30 tests on-hand in every household by now. It's mostly because politicians keep hoping that it will all be over in the next month or two...since mid-2020. There's a real lack of planning for a year from now, etc. Like, it looks like Omicron could be the beginning of the end. But what if there is another mutation in mid-2022 that increases immune escape and also mortality by 5x. It's possible, even if unlikely. That's the sort of thing we need to be prepared for, in terms of being able to ramp up manufacturing of N95s, tests, etc. Really, many of these things should be semi-nationalized by this point anyway.

I feel like n95s are finally being made to meet demand, I've been seeing them at Home Depot lately.  But yeah, testing has been a shitshow for this entire pandemic, it hasn't been able to deal with any of the surges we've had.

Idiot sister in law (who has one and only one Moderna shot because it allegedly made her period two days late) somehow got her one kid COVID, and it’s only a matter or time before the other kid and her and her husband and her brother in law who lives in their basement all get sick since none of them are fully vaccinated.

The kid is 14 months and in addition to COVID has a double ear infection (probably from the mold in their house they/their landlord refuse to get taken care of) and is running almost a 104F fever. Was told to give Tylenol and only if he has trouble breathing to go to the hospital because they’re so full in Ohio.

Long story short think of America's Got Talent but instead of being voted for, you're voted against. The point wasn't to showcase talent but to try and get your fifteen minutes. When the producers had enough of your nonsense they literally hit a gong and you got hooked off stage.

Why hasn't the gong show been rebooted yet?

The outrage to Ford's decision to implement a lockdown is clear on Twitter.

If you're a doctor, you're upset he didn't put us in full lockdown in mid-December.

If you're a small business, you're upset about the lockdown shutting down your business.

If you're a reporter for the Toronto Star, you're upset that he delayed the start of school for only two days last week, only to change course this week.  How indecisive.

If you're a reporter for the Toronto Sun, you're upset that he is putting the burden of the pandemic on children.

I am pretty sure @AbsolutSurgenposted the article that matrix came from back in the summer

As a matter of principle I do not read the Wall Street journal

That matrix originally came from the CDC, I posted their matrix (not the WSJ's) a long time ago.  (Too lazy to go find it.)

The knowledge that cloth masks are largely ineffective is not new.

Woke up this morning with a sore throat. Took a rapid test but it was negative. Neither of us have had any human contact outside the home for about...7 days or so, except for a brief trip to the pharmacy where she went inside with an N95 to pick up prescriptions. I'll test again tomorrow morning, but we're both working from home anyway. Could be something else, I suppose.

This is stupid. 20-30 mins is more time than I spend around someone in a grocery store, mall, park, whatever.

It's also dumb because cloth masks here means single layer of fabric when all the fabric masks my oldest wears to school are several layers thick.

Maybe by cloth mask they mean a bandana? But this reeks of academia being stupid academics.

From the article...

Single-layer cloth masks, which many people prefer for comfort and style, can block larger droplets carrying the virus, but aren’t as effective in blocking smaller aerosols or particles carrying the virus, according to infectious-disease specialists.

Yes, these masks aren't better than an N95. They just shouldn't be lumped in with a single layer of fabric.

So I may have gotten someone fired? Not sure.

I've been running the daily COVID updates on reddit for a while now for my province (compiling the government data), and over Christmas the government decided to stop reporting all case data. Anyway, one person who works at the provincial health authority leaked the numbers each day, and I made graphs for them (to be clear, he leaked them on reddit, and then I just took that data and made graphs once the data was public). Another person who works at the health authority also sent me the same info privately, so I know it's legit.

Anyway, I started a twitter account with these graphs as well, as it's exploded. The head of the opposition party (and multiple members of the legislature) are following me, people who work high-up at universities, police, health authority, etc. The government stopped reporting the numbers against for Jan 1, 2, 3, and the guy leaked them again on reddit for the 1st and 2nd (and I posted them on twitter once they were public on reddit). I've been careful not to ever release anything myself that wasn't already out there, but I've definitely amplified the reach of the numbers.

Yesterday they didn't post anything online, and I haven't been able to reach them through DMs on reddit. It sounds like the government (party, not bureaucracy) was very mad that people were leaking, and may have started a search for the person. I hope they don't/didn't get into trouble. On the other hand, the government is stupid because they were going to release all this data anyway, they just decided to pause the releases for the holidays. Ostensibly it was because staff were on holidays...but obviously the data was still being collected, and it was obviously political so that they could justify taking no new actions while cases exploded (no cases reported = no new cases!).
